*Introducing the Ultoriginal - Baron1898 - 06-09-2019

After nearly a season-long hiatus, I am once again back to writing media. Why the long delay? You’ll find out by next Monday at the latest. But until then, enjoy.

To be the best, you have to beat the best. Theoretically, if one team wins against another team, and a third team beats the first team the next game, then the third team is better than the second team; after all, C > A and A > B, so C > A > B and C> B. Obviously this isn’t how winning works, but if we take this idea to the extreme, we can clearly determine the best team in the league by tracking down the current owner of the Ultoriginal Trophy.

What is the Ultoriginal Trophy?
The Ultoriginal tracks back all the way to Season 1, back when the league had a lowly six teams, the DSFL didn’t exist, and Dermot wasn’t playing. It was a simpler time, one that saw the Arizona Outlaws collide with the Colorado Yeti for the chance to win the very first Ultimus. The Yeti lost the game 29-6, setting a precedent for their franchise as the NSFL equivalent of the Cleveland Browns; meanwhile, the Outlaws won themselves a trophy and started a proud tradition now known as the Ultoriginal. Since the Outlaws were now proven to be the best, then whoever beat the Outlaws was the new top dog.

And whoever beat that team took the crown from them, and so on, and so on.

Why does this matter at all?
None of life matters if you think about it, so from my point of view, you might as well learn something new while you’re contemplating existence. It’s a fun thought exercise if nothing else.

So who has the Ultoriginal now?
I’m getting there. Stop being so impatient, Reader Strawman. What I’m about to recount is a tale of success, of failure, and of the plight of the Colorado Yeti - forever cursed by losing the game that spawned this award to begin with.

The Early Years: Dominance in the Desert

Arizona took home the Ultoriginal after their Season 1 campaign, ready to defend the title from two new expansion teams and a host of returning challengers. In the first full season with the Ultoriginal, how did it play out?

Season 2
Started the season with the Arizona Outlaws
Week 4 14-13 loss at Colorado
Week 5 18-14 loss at Philadelphia
Week 6 13-3 loss versus Orange County
Week 7 26-20 loss versus Arizona
Week 8 13-10 loss at Baltimore
Week 10 24-17 loss at Yellowknife
Week 12 21-10 loss at Orange County
Week 14 33-28 loss at Yellowknife
Conference 16-14 loss at Baltimore
Ultimus 33-6 loss at Arizona

Season 2 was a wild ride for the Ultoriginal. The Outlaws successfully held on to their title for three weeks before, ironically, losing the title to the Colorado Yeti they had gotten it from in the prior year’s Ultimus. This started a mild streak of hot potato, with the trophy hopping from Colorado to Philadelphia to Orange County to Arizona and finally to Baltimore in successive weeks. Fun fact, this is the last time Colorado will touch the Ultoriginal until Season 9.

The trophy switched hands a couple more times before finally ending up in Yellowknife in time for the playoffs. Since the trophy could end up in the possession of a non-playoff team by Week 14, not all Ultimus winners are Ultoriginal winners - of the fourteen Ultimus winning teams since the S1 Arizona Outlaws, only six were holders of both awards. This year was one of those years, however; the Wraiths lost in the Conference round to the Baltimore Hawks, who subsequently gave the victory and the trophy to the Outlaws in the Ultimus. This S2 Outlaws team is the only team in history thus far to begin and end the season with the Ultoriginal.

Season 3
Started the season with the Arizona Outlaws
Week 12 26-23 loss versus Baltimore
Week 13 25-23 loss at Orange County
Week 14 32-17 loss versus Yellowknife

From the Ultimus until their date with the Hawks, the Arizona Outlaws won twelve games in a row with the Ultoriginal, a record that has yet to be touched. Another record that looms large is the number of single season games in possession of the trophy, with 11; the next closest team’s record is 8. They could not go undefeated, however, and gave the Ultoriginal up to the Hawks, who passed it on once again to Orange County and then to Yellowknife to close the season. This time, the Wraiths did not qualify for the postseason, and the Ultoriginal would not reunite with the Ultimus winning Arizona Outlaws for a third year. This is the last time that Arizona would have possession of the Ultoriginal more than any other team, because on the horizon loomed another…

Orange is the New Red

Yellowknife carried the trophy home to kick off Season 4, but it wouldn’t stay in their grasp for much longer.

Season 4
Started the season with the Yellowknife Wraiths
Week 1 20-17 loss at Baltimore
Week 2 31-23 loss versus San Jose
Week 3 17-9 loss versus Arizona
Week 5 31-27 loss at Baltimore
Week 7 48-22 loss at Yellowknife
Week 8 23-21 loss versus Philadelphia
Week 10 19-9 loss versus Orange County
Week 14 26-17 loss at San Jose

There are three times in NSFL history where a six game losing streak for the Ultoriginal will take place. From week 12 of Season 3 to Week 3 of Season 4 is the first of those three to occur. San Jose finally got to hold the trophy for a game before handing it off to Arizona, meaning that as of Season 4, the only team without the Ultoriginal is the Las Vegas Legion. Spoiler alert, the Legion go down as the only team to never hold the trophy.

This is also the first season that Arizona doesn’t hold the Ultoriginal more than any other team. That honor goes to the Orange County Otters, who from this point onwards proceed to own the Ultoriginal for a plurality of 7 out of 12 seasons. Anyway, Arizona to Baltimore to Yellowknife to Philly to the aforementioned Otters, who interrupt their winning streak with a Week 14 loss to San Jose that keeps the Ultoriginal once again out of the playoffs.

Season 5
Started the season with the San Jose Sabercats
Week 2 30-22 loss versus Arizona
Week 3 46-29 loss at Yellowknife
Week 4 26-20 loss at Orange County
Week 11 34-14 loss at Yellowknife
Week 12 27-17 loss versus San Jose
Week 13 49-14 loss at Philadelphia

It’s now been over three years since the Ultoriginal was first won by Arizona, and the title of the best team in the league (technically) belongs to the San Jose Sabercats. But not for long - the Sabercats get one more game to enjoy their status before a three week losing streak sees the Ultoriginal moved to the Outlaws, then the Wraiths, and finally the dreaded Orange County menace. The Otters hang on for a seven game winning streak before the Wraiths steal it back in a blowout loss for Orange County in Week 11. The Sabercats proceed to beat Yellowknife in Yellowknife the next week to take the title, travel to Philadelphia, and get absolutely stomped by the Liberty. This loss was so humiliating that San Jose decided to pull a Colorado and rip off the second longest winning drought in history. See you again in Season 10, San Jose. In other news, the Ultoriginal holder missed the playoffs again.

Season 6
Started the season with the Philadelphia Liberty
Week 2 37-17 loss at Baltimore
Week 3 34-14 loss at Yellowknife
Week 4 27-27 tie at New Orleans (YKW keeps possession)
Week 5 39-13 loss versus Orange County
Week 7 33-29 loss versus Baltimore
Week 8 22-13 loss at Arizona
Week 9 20-14 loss at Yellowknife
Week 10 41-35 loss at Arizona
Week 12 47-23 loss at Orange County

The Philadelphia Liberty open the season as reigning champs, in the Ultoriginal sense of the word. They start off strong by beating the Wraiths in Yellowknife but then give the trophy up to Baltimore, who then gives it up to Yellowknife anyway. The Wraiths survive a tie game in New Orleans and proceed to lose to Orange County on home turf. Baltimore takes the trophy right back in Week 7, travels to Arizona, and loses possession. Arizona gives it up to Yellowknife but regrets their decision and takes it back the next week. All this chaos comes to a close in Week 12, when the Otters seize the Outlaws by the throat, take the title, and ride it all the way to an Ultimus victory. It’s one of only three times that the Ultoriginal holder at the end of Week 14 also wins that year’s Ultimus, and only one of six times period that the Ultoriginal even gets to the playoffs.

”But wait!” I can hear you say from wherever you’re reading this, ”Orange County might not get the Ultoriginal! Why does Yellowknife get to keep the trophy after Week 4 if they only tied the Second Line!”

You are absolutely right! There is technically no law that states that a tie goes to the team already holding the Ultoriginal, and so if Yellowknife doesn’t maintain possession until Week 5, the Ultoriginal can’t go on the complicated road leading to an Orange County victory.

I made the rules so that the team that already has the Ultoriginal keeps it in the event of a tie. The concept of the trophy passing on requires that team to be beaten, which can’t happen in a tie, and thus the trophy remains put. This is the simplest solution and keeps the Ultoriginal lineage rooted in one timeline. But it’s unsatisfying to know that there exists an alternate universe where New Orleans takes the prize and has an entirely different outcome.

Except that’s not the case.

Let’s take a look at what happens if New Orleans wins the trophy in Week 4. Hop into the DeLorean and fire up the TARDIS, let’s go back and change the past.

Season 6
Started the season with the Philadelphia Liberty
Week 2 37-17 loss at Baltimore
Week 3 34-14 loss at Yellowknife
Week 4 27-27 tie at New Orleans (NOLA gains possession)
Week 5 38-10 loss at Philadelphia
Week 7 33-31 loss at Arizona
Week 9 20-14 loss at Yellowknife
Week 10 41-35 loss at Arizona
Week 12 47-23 loss at Orange County

The Philadelphia Liberty open the season as reigning champs, in the Ultoriginal sense of the word. They start off strong by beating the Wraiths in Yellowknife but then give the trophy up to Baltimore, who then gives it up to Yellowknife anyway. The Wraiths fumble away the title immediately in a 27-27 tie in New Orleans, giving the Second Line their first taste of the Ultoriginal glory. But Philly’s back for revenge, and in a 38-10 rout, they take back the trophy from New Orleans. They keep it for a whopping two weeks before handing it off to the Outlaws in Week 7.

Face it. Orange County is inevitable.

Season 7
Started the season with the Orange County Otters
Week 1 26-24 loss at Philadelphia
Week 6 24-16 loss at Baltimore
Week 8 27-21 loss at Orange County
Ultimus 28-19 loss versus Philadelphia

The Orange County Otters, despite their dominance of Ultoriginal ownership, have only ever started the season with the title once, in Season 7. This confused the poor Otters so much that they immediately gave it to the Liberty out of the kindness of their hearts. Good job, Otters. Philadelphia accepted the gesture and started the season with a 5-0 winning streak before the Hawks spoiled the fun and took it in Week 6. All this (mild) chaos comes to a close in Week 8, when the Otters seize the Hawks by the throat, take the title, and ride it all the way to an Ultimus… loss? Plot twist, it’s those same Philly rascals who beat them all the way back in Week 1.

Notable things that happened this year: there were only four ownership changes the whole season, tied for the second least in NSFL history. Both Arizona and Yellowknife broke their streak of seasons with the Ultoriginal, leaving Orange County as the last one standing. Will they keep it going through Season 15? Take a wild guess.

Season 8
Started the season with the Philadelphia Liberty
Week 2 31-21 loss at Baltimore
Week 4 32-28 loss versus Yellowknife
Week 7 38-21 loss versus Orange County
Week 10 33-10 loss at New Orleans
Week 13 27-26 loss at Orange County
Week 14 36-31 loss at Arizona

The reigning Philadelphia Liberty began the eighth NSFL season with an Ultimus in their trophy case and an imaginary Ultoriginal in their hearts. The persistently annoying Baltimore Hawks stole it from them in Week 2, passing it on two weeks later at home against Yellowknife, who held on for three weeks before finally giving it up to the Orange menace. The Otters themselves held on for three weeks but, in a blowout loss in the Big Easy, gave the Second Line their very first possession of the Ultoriginal. NOLA is the most recent team in history to possess the title (a distinction likely to be surpassed by either or both of the expansion teams this season).

From there, the Second Line held on for a respectable three weeks before relinquishing the Ultoriginal back to the Otters, who subsequently fumbled it away in the last week of the season to the non-playoff team the Arizona Outlaws. For the fourth time so far, the Ultoriginal missed the postseason. And this proved to be the end of a five-season streak by the Otters in which they maintained plurality possession of the Ultoriginal. From here, affairs get a lot more interesting…

Hey Look Who’s Back

Fun fact, the Arizona Outlaws have started four seasons with the Ultoriginal in hand, more than any other team.

Season 9
Started the season with the Arizona Outlaws
Week 1 23-16 loss at Colorado
Week 2 41-6 loss at Baltimore
Week 4 34-14 loss at Orange County
Week 5 28-13 loss at Yellowknife
Week 7 38-17 loss at Philadelphia
Week 8 58-10 loss at New Orleans
Week 10 30-24 loss versus Yellowknife
Week 12 30-19 loss at Orange County
Week 14 40-23 loss at Colorado
Conference 40-34 loss at Baltimore
Ultimus 37-24 loss at New Orleans

Also fun fact, if you count the postseason, then Season 9 saw the Ultoriginal changed hands in 11 of 16 possible games, which is an insane turnover rate only surpassed later by Season 13. It started when HOLY CRAP the Colorado Yeti got the trophy! A 23-16 loss by the Outlaws in Colorado gave the Yeti an end to their nearly eight season drought. It’s not exactly as if they will hold it a ton from here on, but it’s better than zero. Anyway, Colorado was so excited that the trophy slipped out of their hands and into the Hawks’ in a 41-6 blowout. From here, the Ultoriginal switched possession in a series of tightly contested games with scores of 34-14, 28-13, 38-17, and 58-10. New Orleans came out of that stretch with the title.

They gave it up two weeks later to the Yellowknife Wraiths in the only home loss of the season for the title winners. Yellowknife lost it two weeks later at Orange County, and they lost it two weeks later at Colorado, who made the postseason. The Yeti lost the conference championship to the Baltimore Hawks, who lost it to the New Orleans Second Line to once again reunite the Ultoriginal and the Ultimus.

Season 10
Started the season with the New Orleans Second Line
Week 2 24-10 loss at Orange County
Week 4 41-6 loss at Baltimore
Week 7 38-12 loss at New Orleans
Week 10 37-30 loss at Yellowknife
Week 11 42-20 loss at San Jose
Week 12 45-30 loss at Baltimore

Because of the random nature of the Ultoriginal, almost every season has fun tidbits that separate it from the rest. For example, this is the first season with no home losses for the defending teams - every exchange was on the road. The Second Line held on for a week, but Ultoriginal holders in the start of the season rarely hold on for long, and in week 2 they gave it up to Annoying Orange. The Otters gave it up to the Hawks, who survived for three weeks before a road blowout loss to the Second Line. After that, a week 10 date with Yellowknife stole the title, followed by a San Jose upset win that snapped their own losing streak, and a week 12 loss at Baltimore that gave the Hawks the trophy all the way through the Ultimus.

Season 11
Started the season with the Baltimore Hawks
Week 6 30-14 loss at Philadelphia
Week 8 40-17 loss at New Orleans
Week 9 35-25 loss at Orange County
Week 13 44-41 loss at Arizona

The Hawks ended up with a 10-game winning streak dating back through Season 10, one of the longest such streaks in possession of the Ultoriginal. Philadelphia snapped this streak in Week 6 in a road loss for Baltimore, one of only four times the Ultoriginal switched hands this season. The Liberty lost the trophy in Week 8 to the Second Line, who fumbled it away a week later to the Orange County Otters - still the only team to possess the Ultoriginal in every season. But although the Otters made it into the playoffs this season, the trophy did not. A Week 13 loss in Arizona gave the Outlaws control for the rest of the season and into next year. Season 11 once again did not have any Ultoriginal holders lose the title at home.

Season 12
Started the season with the Arizona Outlaws
Week 1 31-20 loss at Yellowknife
Week 2 37-34 loss at New Orleans
Week 3 34-14 loss at Philadelphia
Week 6 45-30 loss versus Colorado
Week 8 35-20 loss versus Orange County
Week 13 26-20 loss versus Yellowknife
Week 14 31-27 loss at Colorado

The next two seasons are both earmarked by a serious bout of butterfingers. Arizona gave it up in Yellowknife, the Wraiths gave it up in New Orleans, and the Second Line gave it up in Philadelphia. Almost three years have passed since the last time an Ultoriginal holder gave it away at home, a streak broken by the Week 6 robbery of the Liberty at home by the Yeti. The Colorado Yeti put together their first, and so far only, winning streak with the Ultoriginal in hand, winning a startling two games in a row before the team-that-shall-not-be-named takes the Ultoriginal again. Yellowknife plays the hero of the story by taking it away from the Otters in Week 13 and generously giving it back to the poor Yeti the next week. At three games with possession of the title, this is the winningest season in Colorado history.

Green Is Your Color

We’ve only got three seasons left to go, and it’s time to start saying goodbye to a few teams.

Season 13
Started the season with the Colorado Yeti
Week 1 31-10 loss at Orange County
Week 2 33-17 loss at Yellowknife
Week 3 48-14 loss at Baltimore
Week 4 17-10 loss at Arizona
Week 6 31-23 loss versus Orange County
Week 7 35-20 loss at Philadelphia
Week 8 30-26 loss versus Colorado
Week 9 51-24 loss versus San Jose
Week 13 30-17 loss at Orange County
Week 14 24-17 loss at New Orleans

You might remember a while back that there were three times in Ultoriginal history where six straight weeks of losing commenced. What I didn’t tell you was that the last two occurrences happened in back to back seasons, with identical formats - the last two weeks of the season and the first four weeks of the next. This particular losing circle goes back to Yellowknife last season, who gave it to the Yeti. Colorado relinquished control in Week 1 in a blowout to the Otters. They got blown out the next week in Yellowknife, who got even more blown out in Baltimore, who lost a close bout with the Outlaws in Arizona. When the Outlaws lost two weeks later at home against the Evil Empire, they became the first team to exit our story - Arizona has not touched the Ultoriginal since.

A 35-20 Week 7 match gave the Liberty the title, a close home loss gave it to the Yeti, and the Sabercats dunked 51 points on poor Colorado to take it for themselves. For those keeping score, this is 10 losses in 11 consecutive games. This is also when the Yeti bow out. San Jose keeps it for four weeks in the season’s longest winning streak before starting the cycle over again with a Week 13 loss to the Otters, who then lost to the Second Line. As mentioned earlier, this is the most volatile season for the Ultoriginal, with 10 possession changes in only 14 games.

Season 14
Started the season with the New Orleans Second Line
Week 1 31-20 loss at Baltimore
Week 2 35-32 loss versus Orange County
Week 3 23-0 loss at San Jose
Week 4 21-16 loss at New Orleans
Week 6 45-28 loss at Orange County
Week 11 31-19 loss at Philadelphia
Week 12 20-13 loss at Yellowknife
Week 14 23-20 loss versus San Jose

Here we go again with the losing streak. The Second Line start off the season with a loss in Baltimore, and the Hawks follow it up with a home loss to the Otters. From there it goes to San Jose and then to New Orleans again. Just like last season, a brief two game winning streak commences before another Week 6 loss gives the Ultoriginal to Orange County for a solid five weeks. This win streak comes to an end when the Liberty take possession in Philadelphia, travel to Yellowknife, and lose. The Wraiths seem destined to carry the Ultoriginal into the next season, but a close Week 14 loss at home against the Sabercats means that for the first time since Season 10, the Ultoriginal travels to the postseason. San Jose wins its first Ultimus with the Ultoriginal in hand.

Also, two of the six teams remaining have touched the Ultoriginal for the last time. In the interest of maintaining a modicum of suspense, I’m not going to tell you who they are beforehand.

Season 15
Started the season with the San Jose Sabercats
Week 5 23-14 loss versus Baltimore
Week 13 30-17 loss at Philadelphia
Week 14 27-16 loss versus Yellowknife

In contrast to the historically volatile Season 13, Season 15 was the least volatile since Season 3, with only three possession changes total over the course of the season. This season was dominated at first by the San Jose Sabercats, who weathered the storm for four weeks before giving up possession to the Baltimore Hawks at home. The Hawks went almost the whole rest of the season with the title, before a bout in Philadelphia gave the Liberty the Ultoriginal. However, although the trophy had gone almost the entire season in the possession of playoff teams, the Liberty couldn’t resist dropping a meaningless game at home in Week 14 to the non-playoff Yellowknife Wraiths, keeping the trophy out of the postseason for this season.

The most notable thing to observe here is that THE ORANGE COUNTY OTTERS NEVER TOUCHED THE TITLE. This breaks a 13-season long streak by the Otters and makes it so that no team has had the Ultoriginal in every season. It is also a clear omen that the Otters’ dynasty must soon be over, which is good news for other teams that would appreciate having a playoff spot.

For fun, let’s look at some interesting statistics of the Ultoriginal:
  • There have been 196 regular season and 12 playoff games with the Ultoriginal at play, for a total of 208 games. Counting possession as having the Ultoriginal when the game ends, the winningest team is the Orange County Otters, with possession after 57 games (27.4%). They are followed up by the Baltimore Hawks with 39 games (18.8%), the Arizona Outlaws with 27 (13.0%), and the Yellowknife Wraiths with 24 (11.5%). The losingest team is the Las Vegas Legion with absolutely no wins (0.0%). Among active teams, the Colorado Yeti are the worst with only 7 games (3.4%), followed by the New Orleans Second Line with 15 (7.2%), the San Jose Sabercats with 17 (8.2%), and the Philadelphia Liberty with 22 (10.6%).
  • The Otters had plurality possession of the trophy for seven of the 14 seasons. Baltimore is next up with three, followed by the Outlaws with two and the Wraiths and Sabercats each with one.
  • Discounting the S1 Ultimus, there have been six times that a season ended with the Ultimus and Ultoriginal in the same place. No team has ever held both at the same time more than once. The only team to not accomplish this besides the Yeti is the Yellowknife Wraiths.
  • In Weeks 1-5 and Week 14, the Otters have only ever had the Ultoriginal either once or twice. On the other end of the spectrum are Weeks 12 and 13, where the Otters have had the trophy seven times apiece.
  • Weeks 1, 4, and 14 are the only times where every team has held the Ultoriginal. This is mainly limited by the Yeti’s historical refusal to win games regardless of the week.
  • The highest scoring game in Ultoriginal history is Week 6 of Season 6, where the Orange County Otters absolutely walloped the Colorado Yeti to the tune of 69-17. Amazingly, Week 6 was also host to the second highest scoring game in Ultoriginal history, a Season 10 bout where the Baltimore Hawks routed the Philadelphia Liberty 68-7. The latter game is also the most lopsided game in Ultoriginal records.
  • The highest scoring transitional game in Ultoriginal history (aka a game in which the torch was passed from one team to the next) was a 58-10 whopper by the Second Line of the Philadelphia Liberty in Week 8 of Season 9. The lowest scoring such games were the Week 6 and Week 8 games of Season 2, which saw 13-3 and 13-10 final victories for the Otters and Hawks respectively.
  • Holding the Ultoriginal in Weeks 2 and 14 is historically unlucky; you have a 64.2% chance of losing possession. On the other hand, Weeks 9 and 11 harbor only a 21.4% chance of losing, meaning that middle of the season Ultoriginal possession is pretty smooth sailing.
  • If you constructed a perfectly average season based on the most frequent teams per week, this is how it would look: Philadelphia/Baltimore Week 1, Baltimore Weeks 2-3, Arizona Week 4, Baltimore Week 5, Orange County Week 6, Orange County/Baltimore Week 7, Orange County Weeks 8-13, and a five way tie between Orange County/Yellowknife/San Jose/Arizona/Colorado in Week 14. The late season dominance of the Otters really stands out.
So what have we learned today? The answer is that the Yellowknife Wraiths are currently the best team in the NSFL.

Suck it, Baltimore.

tbf there aren't really many original ideas left when it comes to this stuff.

that said, this isn't quite the same as how I did it

I think it's good media. And I know how long it takes to track everything (which is why I have a googledoc for all the relevant results) so I hope the graders take that into consideration when sorting the payout.
