*Who Didn't Get Protected? - nickyvmlp - 06-16-2019 So this whole expansion draft thing is a unique little experience that most of us have never been a part of. About half of the league is on pins and needles, wondering if they’re in danger of getting poached by the Butchers or Copperheads, while the rest of us get to watch on and enjoy the chaos (I’m a S15 player, meaning I’m exempt, so hahaha). Each team gets a specific amount of people they can protect, and everyone else might need to start making travel plans. The list of those who are protected were just revealed earlier today, link to that post is right here, and with that out of the way, here’s a quick summary of the rules.
Quarterback: 1. ![]() Yep, that's it. If you want a quarterback, that's the best that'll be available in the expansion market. Now luckily for Chicago, Austin is already committed to drafting Easton Cole, since he's their GM. However, this should only be seen as a safety net for them. If I were Chicago, I'd throw everything at incoming free agent Rose Jenkins, or try to convince someone better (and younger) to move positions. If neither of those happen, then Borkus is a decent worst-case scenario. He's got one year left on his contract, and it'll at least buy them some time to find someone better. Running Back: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() 3. ![]() 4. ![]() The options here aren't the greatest in the world, but there's still a little bit of depth here. Austin probably won't need to go for a running back here, since they have Dick Wizardry as a GM, so Chicago will likely get first dibs on a running back. They selected Ben Bortboy in the mid-rounds of the draft, so they'll need someone to come in and be the lead back for them. Ricky Adams would make a decent #1 back as he starts to enter regression, but Chicago would be wise to start finding someone else to complement him. On the other hand, I wouldn't be shocked if Aksel Daniellson went before Adams, simply because regression will tank Adams's TPE in the coming years, while Daniellson still has three years left before it hits him. Seer Zephyrous is a year away from it, so he may be a late round flyer, as well as Fast Boija, who's also three years out, but might not even be worth it, unless he comes back from inactivity. Wide Receiver: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() 3. ![]() 4. ![]() 5. ![]() This isn't the most exciting group you'll find, seeing as how almost every team protected at least one receiver (Yellowknife protected three), but that's fine, since both teams already have one receiver. Chicago has Kazimir Oles as a GM, who's still the highest rated receiver in the league with a year left before regression, and Austin drafted Rod Tidwell in the second round last year. I think Austin would be wise to take Django Anoa'i fairly early, as he's been steadily improving, is still active, and may be ready for #1 receiver duties. Anoa'i and Tidwell together would be an exciting young duo with room to grow. Unfortunately, Anao'i is the only person in this batch who's still active, although all of the rest of the guys I've listed, besides Pennington, are still fairly young. Each of them are two or three years away from regression, so picking up Hardwick or Nagasawa as a #2 or slot receiver seems like a pretty good deal. Pennington and Batoff, on the other hand, should be safe from getting taken, the "four players from each team" rule should kick in before these guys enter the conversation, but if they aren't, they'll make decent #3 receivers. Tight End: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() Teams really wanted to protect their tight ends, way more than I was expecting honestly. I thought this would be a good place to snag some sneaky good receivers, but everyone except these two guys are either protected, retiring, terrible, or part of that incredible S15 tight end class (#HumbleBrag), and both of them were backups last year, which explains why they're both here. Now, Austin probably won't go high on a tight end, since they took Chase Jensen in the first last year, but Chicago could definitely use the help here, since Timmy Hoss went IA before he even hit 200 TPE, oh dear. Declan Harp would be a solid choice for Chicago, even as he goes through regression. Steven Moore might be an option if either team considers a scheme that favors a second tight end, as his attributes are fairly solid, but he's only a late rounder at best. Defensive End: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() 3. ![]() 4. ![]() 5. ![]() It's a bit of a surprise to me that Kwame Abayomi Mbanefo was left unprotected, seeing as how he's the second highest rated DE in the game (and the highest one, D'Pez Poopsie, is a free agent). Such is the case when talking about a team like the Baltimore Hawks; they have so much talent, they couldn't protect it all. Now, Kwame does have a mutual option in his contract, so he could say no if he wants to and test free agency, but if he commits to an expansion team, he's gonna go high. Like first couple of rounds high. I get that DEs may not be as valuable in this league as they are in the IRL one, but still, he plays like his hair is on fire on every play. And considering neither team went high on a defensive linemen in the draft last year, Mbanefo should be in very high demand. Marc Spector and Grayson Kuusela would make quality #2 ends, and decent #1 ends to whoever misses out on the KAM sweepstakes, while Steven Oats is good enough to start, but will likely be a short-term solution for the position. Ja'brill Tuck is likely safe from being selected. All of these guys are at least pretty young, as they were all drafted in S11 or S12. Defensive Tackle: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() 3. ![]() 4. ![]() 5. ![]() Football Sackerman led the league in sacks last year. He had 16, the next closest had 12. As the name implies, he's a certified sackerman, and I'd bet that every team in the league would love his services. Whoever does get him will likely start him immediately, and they won't have to worry about that position for at least a couple more years. Curtis Saul and Benson Harris aren't far behind Sackerman in TPE, and while they didn't produce like Sackerman did last season, they could produce at a high level if put in the right system. Harris didn't see much playing time last year, so I'm sure he'd love to see the field again. Everyone else is just depth, there's little chance Jaylin Hobbs or Will Foster will be taken, so let's just move on. Linebacker: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() 3. ![]() I was expecting Charlie Trout to be leading this list, but he apparently he retired and became an agent. That move pretty much tanks the linebacker depth for the expansion teams, and makes it so Austin and Chicago will need to make some moves in the draft and free agency to fill out their rosters. Austin Roenick might've been safe from being selected, as his TPE is gonna drop by 50% next year, were it not for the lack of depth at the position. He is still updating, but I don't know if it'll be worth it for much longer. However, keep your eyes out for Sandip Bakshi. He was a first rounder in S14 and Yellowknife left him unprotected, despite the fact that he's still active. His progress has been rather slow, but he still has plenty of time and talent to get results on the field. Expect him to go slightly higher than you might expect. A.J. Robertson probably wouldn't even be in the discussion to be picked if this position had any depth. If he goes, then expect whoever took him to make a play for someone better in free agency or the draft. Cornerback: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() 3. ![]() 4. ![]() 5. ![]() Last year, Baltimore had three corners who locked down the rest of the league. Two out of those three players will be available, as only Axel Hornbacher was protected. Achilles Hondo didn't produce very much last year, but his TPE is just too big to ignore. On the other hand, Arbin Asipi III was a nightmare for quarterbacks last year, leading the league in picks. He might get to prove that that season wasn't a fluke as both Hondo and Asipi could find themselves as #1 corners this season. Chicago took Xerxes Ridley in the second last year, so expect Austin to go for one or both of the these guys. Jonathan Rice, Spencer Castle, and Bobson Dugnutt have all been IA for a minute or two, but they would all make good #2 or #3 corners. Safety: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() 3. ![]() 4. ![]() 5. ![]() The safety position got heavily protected, and those who didn't get protected are hitting free agency. However, safety is one of the few positions that the expansion teams are mostly OK at. Both teams took a couple of safeties, and there'll be plenty of them to make a stab in free agency, so the lack of high-end talent here isn't a huge worry for these teams. Thad Pennington is there and has been active sorta recently, so he's a decent selection. Shannon Hobbs is a fringe starter on a one-year deal, so he'd be a short-term solution and nothing more. Everyone else is simply a depth move or a safety net if they can't get anyone else. Keep an eye on Caleb McCoy, just because he's a Yeti, and those guys are so lacking in talent, they were able to protect everyone they wanted, and everyone else is ineligible. He might be available late once a couple of teams get locked out. 2048 words . *Who Didn't Get Protected? - ValorX77 - 06-16-2019 Uhh sir, Canton is protected! *Who Didn't Get Protected? - cpetrella - 06-16-2019 im not a bot you troglodyte *Who Didn't Get Protected? - nickyvmlp - 06-16-2019 (06-16-2019, 06:23 PM)ValorX77 Wrote:Uhh sir, Canton is protected!
