*The 1st Annual Efteling Media Awards - Baron1898 - 07-03-2019

Welcome to the Inaugural Efteling Media Awards! I’m your host, Baron1898, and on behalf of the B&M Media Group, I’ll be presenting these (unofficial) awards recognizing the finest achievements in the realm of media over the past season.

The league’s media is one of the most thriving and important parts of this community. Whether it’s the latest news, draft coverage, statistical breakdowns, or just plain drama, the media is essential in making the NSFL feel alive and connected. Some articles are better than others, but it’s always important to remember that even the most shoddily made articles help keep the media churning and should be applauded for putting their voice out. Yet, the best of the best deserve recognition, and that’s what I’ll be putting forth today.

So what is an Efteling? Each year, I’ll be looking at the content published during every media cycle, ending with the annual Double Draft Media promotion. For this year, that means anything published from May 8 through July 2. From there, I’ll narrow down a shortlist for each of the six possible awards:
  • + Efteling for Best Media Article (Limited)
    + Efteling for Best Media Article (Series)
    + Efteling for Best Media Presser
    + Efteling for Distinguished Author
    + Efteling for Rising Star
    + Lifetime Achievement Award[/li]
The winner of each category thus receives an Efteling, which is like an Oscar but somehow more meaningless. Because head office/grading/the patriarchy/the Illuminati/Obama/lizard aliens/the Man™ does not officially sponsor any media awards, there is no actual reward of money or anything official for the winners. So ultimately, an Efteling can be valued as much or as little as you wish.

There are a couple other rules for the awards as well.

1. No content by the B&M Media Group is eligible for an award. I’m a committee of one and want to avoid as much bias as possible even though I know deep down that I deserve the win
2. There can be up to five nominees for every category except Best Media Article (Limited) and Distinguished Author, which can have up to ten.
3. No article can be eligible for more than one of the first three awards. They can, however, be used when considering an author’s total body of work for Distinguished Author and Rising Star.
4. No author can be eligible for both Distinguished Author and Rising Star. An author must be in one of the past two draft classes to qualify for Rising Star, AND have never received an Efteling before. If either of these conditions are not met, the author is only eligible for Distinguished Author.
5. Not all parts of a series must have been published during a given year for those pieces to qualify for Best Media Article (Series). However, if only one was published in a given year, it would instead qualify for Best Media Article (Limited).
6. There’s no rule stating that you have to have written more than one article to qualify for Distinguished Author or Rising Star, but volume of content in addition to quality is heavily taken into account.

Without further ado, here are your S15 Efteling Media Awards!

Best Media Article (Limited)

This category honors the media pieces from the past year that have risen above the competition to bring creative and professional content to the league at large.

And the nominees are…

@Beaver, “Don’t Kill Offensive Linemen You Twats”
  • A decisive argument in favor of overhauling the way that offensive linemen are constructed. Beaver effectively defends the position, aiming to give players a much more rewarding career path as a lineman and preventing the position from slipping back into complete robotic dominion. Time will tell if his proposed changes are ever implemented, but the article argues its point fantastically.[/li]
@BigKicks, “System.out.println(names[i}.length());, An analysis of player names”
  • It’s been said that there are no original ideas, but this article doesn’t seem to care. BigKicks created a wholly unique and riveting discussion around the simple question of “what’s in a name?”, which partially disguises his apparent spite towards Wolfie McDummy for stealing his record (and after recent rule changes, it doesn’t look like that will be changing anytime soon).[/li]
@BrewCrew, “Grading Each Team’s Draft”
  • A concise and thorough breakdown of the recent S16 NSFL Draft. BrewCrew goes through every team’s mindset and analyzes their selections, presenting the most complete transcript of the draft and all of its happenings available.[/li]
@Buttersqauch101, “S15 NSFL Playoffs, a Madden 06 Simulation, Seeing how the playoffs would work in 06”
  • Extremely impressive original content from a rookie author. Using Madden 06 to simulate the playoffs is a fantastic setup for an article, and showcases a great early dedication to the league on the part of Buttersqauch101. The amount of effort that went into making this is palpable.[/li]
@Duilio05, “S15 Players Contending for OROY and DROY”
  • The importance of a clean presentation cannot be understated, and Duilio05 complemented this polish with a great article topic. Duilio05 clearly invested a good amount of research and stat gathering in order to effectively make the case for a number of S15 rookies to receive their time in the spotlight, and did so in an engaging and easy to follow fashion.[/li]
@nickyvmlp, “Who Didn’t Get Protected?”
  • A great guide to possible targets in the expansion draft, especially for newer players unfamiliar with many of the league rosters. Anyone could have seen the protected lists, but nickyvmlp directed a spotlight onto those left behind and compiled an easy to use guide to consider when watching the expansion draft.[/li]
@Player1, “The... North shall rise again?, Austin not-so Texas in first season”
  • Sometimes original articles just kinda pop up out of nowhere. Player1 spun an interesting quirk of the Copperheads’ roster into a full-blown article, engaging to read and a great change of pace from the usual draft week content. Not every article has to be incredibly important to be incredible in its own right.[/li]
@Rradum, “Kansas City Coyotes: Rollercoaster of Emotions, KCC Season in Review”
  • A well-written, introspective narrative covering the season of the Kansas City Coyotes from the perspective of one of its GMs. Rradum covers his thoughts on the Coyotes’ year, going over the draft, notable games, and standout players in a thorough and honest manner. The pride in his locker room is palpable, and the article does a good job of creating optimism for the ‘Yotes future.[/li]
@SouljaBoy2007, “All-NSFL Teams”
  • If we’re stealing the Pro Bowl, we might as well have our own All-Pro rosters as well. Soulja’s teams aren’t officially recognized like the Pro Bowl is, but he presents well thought out and researched arguments for every member of the First Team and Second Team rosters. Great end of season content and a fantastic article to read.[/li]
@`woelker11`, “Making the Case: Players to Consider on Draft Day”
  • Another stellar and passionate rookie outing, this time from woelker11. His article delves deep into many of the prospects for this past DSFL Draft, making arguments for players already highly regarded and for some who spent a ton of time under the radar.[/li]
And the Efteling for Best Media Article (Limited) goes to...

[div align=\\\"center\\\"]@BigKicks![/div]

There was a plethora of creative and captivating media published this year, but BigKicks’ content rose to the top. The combination of a unique conceit, oodles of effort and research, and an engaging writing style made his article a midseason gem. It may be a niche topic, but it’s a hell of a niche. BigKicks is well deserving of taking home the very first Efteling.

Best Media Article (Series)

This category recognizes the media that has been published as part of an ongoing series of articles or podcasts. United in theme or in branding, these media collections can tell stories and capture an audience through the use of sequenced publishing.

And the nominees are…

@C9Van, “NSFL Draft Interviews with Laszlo Forty-Two”
  • If you read even a single one of the Hungarian’s interviews, you’ll slowly discover that Mr. 42 is one of the most unique personas in the entire league. C9Van’s long sequence of draft interviews never gets stale, each volume giving more glimpses into the personality and psyche of his player and always proving to be an engaging read from start to finish.[/li]
@JKortesi81, “The Joe K NSFL Podcast”
  • The premier podcast right now and it’s not particularly close. There aren’t many podcasts at all, especially relative to other media forms, but the Joe K podcast always brings fresh insights and commentary with every issue. JKortesi81 breezes through an hour of content with ease, combining a likeable personality with unique perspectives on league happenings from a veteran community presence.[/li]
@majesiu, “S2 Redraft”
  • After a few season’s drought, majesiu finally issued the followup to the S1 Redraft from earlier this year with a three-part in-depth rundown. This series uses incredible amounts of research and data collection to look deeper into the early history of the league and examine how the class of season two turned out with the benefit of hindsight.[/li]
@nickyvmlp, “NSFL MVP Rankings”
  • The seasonally issued column returns, with nickyvmlp once again highlighting the top players in the NSFL week by week as MVP odds rise and fall. It’s informative, easy to read, and contains a personal flair by the author that distinguishes it from similar content.[/li]
@`woelker11`, “Ranking the Prospects of S17”
  • This series covered literally every single rookie position group in the lead up to the S17 DSFL Draft, an incredible effort by the rookie author. The articles go in depth with their rankings, covering attributes and activity to shape an informed opinion on which prospects are currently slated to shine the brightest. Gives me a little nostalgia for my own rankings way back when.[/li]
And the Efteling for Best Media Article (Series) goes to...

[div align=\\\"center\\\"]@majesiu![/div]

The S2 Redraft lives up to its predecessor and well deserves the award. The media is well-written and engaging, even for those who came into the league well after the players in question finished their careers. Majesiu effectively argues for each player’s placement on the redraft and excellently uses both qualitative and quantitative factors to create the list, an effort fit for an Efteling.

Best Media Presser

This category recognizes the most eloquent, well-thought out, and informative pressers to have been released this past year.

And the nominees are…

@C9Van, “Laszlo Forty-Two NSFL Pre-Draft Presser, Mr.42”
  • As with the interviews, this presser for the singular Laszlo Forty-Two has a unique stylistic touch. Detailed and personal answers for each question lend this presser and undeniable charm.[/li]
@Duilio05 and @shadyshoelace, “New Co-GMs of San Antonio Marshals, Duel Presser with both Stringer & Taco”
  • This dual interview with the co-GMs of the San Antonio Marshals balances the line between more silly and more serious topics. Both Duilio05 and shadyshoelace dive into their philosophies as leaders of the Marshals and how they plan to carry the team moving forward.[/li]
@Graciejj2000, “Chad Maulolo DE - Rookie Season Presser”
  • A laidback look into one of the S16 rookies, this presser from Graciejj2000 showcases Maulolo’s perspective on everything from future aspirations to the smelliest person in the locker room. Each answer is informative, descriptive, and addresses the question well.[/li]
@terriblehippo, “Quenton Bode End of Season Presser”
  • This presser delves deep into the mindset of the league’s first polar bear. Bode talks about his league insights both on a team level and on a personal one, answering each inquiry with precision and filling in with plenty of details.[/li]
@TomHanks, “Forrest Gump + Jimmy Dugan Joint Presser”
  • Part player perspective, part GM talk, TomHanks’ presser is another informative article giving well-constructed answers. Gump’s answers focused more on his future prospects while Dugan’s focused on Tijuana, but the whole displayed good chemistry and rapport with one another in their answers.[/li]
And the Efteling for Best Media Presser goes to...

[div align=\\\"center\\\"]@TomHanks![/div]

The Gump/Dugan presser oozed with characteristic charm and provided plenty of great commentary on a variety of subjects. TomHanks answered questions exhaustively, giving insight on his thoughts towards both his player and his GM personas by the end of his second season. For his well-constructed presser, TomHanks will find an Efteling in his life’s box of chocolates.

Distinguished Author

This category honors authors whose work in the past year has contributed significantly to the media scene at large. These individuals have proven to consistently provide quality content for the press and include some of the most inspired and dedicated members of the community.

And the nominees are…

@adam2552
  • Adam2552’s content in the media scene this year was dominated by news regarding the Football Handlers Organization, one of two new player agencies debuting this offseason. He also contributed pieces on rookie star Sam Torenson and new Copperhead Django A’noai.[/li]
@Duilio05
  • Duilio05 is one of only a few authors this year who was nominated for multiple article Eftelings, both for Best Media Article (Limited) and for Best Media Presser. He also coordinated an interview with previous members of the San Antonio Marshalls, including Peter Larson, Quenton Bode, and previous GM timeconsumer.[/li]
@iamslm22
  • Like adam2552, iamslm22’s media production focused on his own new player agency, Sim League Management. Slim was the first to declare his agency’s existence and wrote a number of articles, including a client list. He broke the news of the signing of one of his biggest clients in Danny Grithead to Yellowknife.[/li]
@majesiu
  • Majesiu’s media presence this year was entirely based around the S2 Redraft three-part series, the recipient of the Efteling for Best Media Article (Series).[/li]
@nickyvmlp
  • This guy was everywhere. The author of not one, not two, but three different series (DSFL Players to Watch, Building the Copperheads and the Butchers, and the Efteling-nominated NSFL MVP Rankings), he also penned a number of solo articles and gathered two Efteling nods.[/li]
@plantane
  • Plantane has one of the most unique voices in media right now. His articles exclusively focus on a more personal look at Xerxes Ridley, with a focus on storytelling over statistics and a deeply touching personal style.[/li]
@Rradum
  • Rradum put together a season-long recap on the Kansas City Coyotes that earned him a nomination for Best Media Article (Limited). In addition, Rradum conducted a long interview with tight end Cameron Olsen and posted a breakdown of many of the S17 players, demonstrating a wide variety of skills and clear knowledge of the sport.[/li]
@SouljaBoy2007
  • Another author with three articles this year, one of which award-nominated. In addition to his All-NSFL article - which I’ll be honest, almost won Best Media Article (Limited) - Soulja concisely covered the first week of NSFL action and gave draft grades for each first round pick in the S16 NSFL Draft.[/li]
@TeyonSchavari
  • TeyonSchavari showed consistent skill as a writer throughout the season, and with a varied focus to boot. From covering week 2 upsets and doing a draft interview with A.J. Lattimer, to reviewing the Otters’ S16 draft and penning a helpful guide for rookies, Teyon gave clear insight and analysis in engaging articles.[/li]
@ValorX77
  • Make no mistake, you can always tell if an article is written by Valor. Leaf expanded upon his usual content this year, lengthening his usually pithy news/drama articles and even conducting league wide GM interviews during his new LeafTalk series.[/li]
And the Efteling for Distinguished Author goes to...

[div align=\\\"center\\\"]@nickyvmlp![/div]

The combination of consistent quality and staggering quantity makes the Efteling for Distinguished Author a slam dunk for nickyvmlp. His multitude of articles are always very well thought out, consistently excellent in their research, and a breeze to read through. It’s evident that nickyvmlp dedicated a ton of time and effort into providing this content, and for that he wholeheartedly deserves the award.

— — — — —

Rising Star

This category recognizes the newcomer authors on the block, whose early dedication and hard work shines through their content.

And the nominees are…

@Buttersqauch101
  • Just the one article was published by Buttersqauch101 this year, but what an article it was. The marriage of a fantastic and unique idea with a ton of work made his Madden 06 article intriguing to read and hopefully a sign of continued work in the future.[/li]
@C9Van
  • One of the most passionate S16 non-recreates around, C9Van garnered two Efteling nominations this year for the volume of work he has published. Laszlo Forty-Two is a distinct character whose quirks and traits shine through his interviews, of which there have certainly been many.[/li]
@`Jackets28`
  • Yellowknife may not actually need a QB (or a RB), but Jackets28 has demonstrated passion for the league and a consistent writing quality that can only improve with time. Along with his NSFL Team Needs article, he also wrote predictions for the DSFL Championship and conducted an interview with Joshua Palmer.[/li]
@SabaDonutMan
  • This man does donuts. SabaDonutMan has published five articles about his character Saba Donut, two of which were interviews, two chronicles of his life thus far, and a very short draft day story. All five are entertaining reads and showcase an S17 rookie that will hopefully continue to publish more content.[/li]
@`woelker11`
  • It’s only been around 15 days since this guy joined the league, and in the meantime he went and wrote a little character introduction for himself, then wrote an entire class breakdown series and rookie recommendation article that garnered a nod for Best Media Article (Series) and Best Media Article (Limited), respectively. Plus some other stuff. And it’s all pretty darn good.[/li]
And the Efteling for Rising Star goes to...

[div align=\\\"center\\\"]@`woelker11`![/div]

Woelker11 is on the fast track to cementing himself as a bonafide media presence. His content was unique, well-written, and thorough, not to mention exploding with rookie vigor - and there’s a crap ton of it to boot. If he can keep up the work he’s been putting into the league thus far, there’s no limit to how far he can go. For his efforts, woelker11 certainly is worthy of the Efteling.

— — — — —

Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lifetime Achievement Award specifically recognizes achievement in the realm of media that falls outside of the first five awards. This award is given once a year to an individual for significant contributions to the league media - whether that be outstanding content from the first fourteen years of media, an impressive career track record of excellence, or a formative effect on the media landscape.

This year’s recipient of the Efteling Lifetime Achievement Award is…

[div align=\\\"center\\\"]@timeconsumer![/div]

Timeconsumer is one of the most influential members of the community, and he has shown a powerful impact on league media, especially in the realm of statistical analysis. Well known for his series on the “Sim Gods”, TC has published a variety of articles conducting tests within the sim, compiling historical team statistics, and delving into fantasy football. Perhaps his most lasting contribution was the article “Do Something About Offensive Line”, a pivotal article that helped lead to the implementation of the OL bot system as we know it today. For his incredibly impressive content, deep diving statistical analysis, and a longstanding dedication to the league, timeconsumer is well deserving of the Efteling Lifetime Achievement Award.

~ ~ ~

Congratulations to @BigKicks, @majesiu, @TomHanks, @nickyvmlp, @`woelker11`, and @timeconsumer for your Efteling victories. Congrats to everyone else who was nominated, and to all those who contributed to the media scene in any fashion this year. Your work is commendable, and I applaud your efforts.

On to Season 16!
