*NSFL MVP Rankings (Season 16 Finale) - nickyvmlp - 08-03-2019

Much like in the NBA playoffs, the NSFL holds their award show well after the finals happens (giving me plenty of time to write this bit). Luckily for us though, the postseason in the NSFL only lasts like a week, so we haven’t totally forgotten the regular season by the time we get to the awards ceremony. Anyway, the regular season is over, we have all of the information the awards committee has. So let’s try and break down who should take home the hardware, starting with the honorable mentions.

Starting at the bottom of the list is Lanzer Grievous (Otters, @Rising Equinox), who hasn’t added too much of note over the last five games, with the exception of a very decent four sacks and five deflections. He should still be the favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Johnny Blaze (Otters, @JBLAZE_THE_BOSS) is going to be Tight End of the Year, and no one else is even in his galaxy. He’s far and away leading the league in receptions, and is third in receiving touchdowns. Jordan von Matt (Liberty, @JVMjrDOT) is fourth in receptions, yards per reception, and receiving touchdowns, and is second in yards. He’s only scored once in the last six games though, so that’ll probably hurt his odds for Wide Receiver of the Year. Vander Jones (Liberty, @`Vander Jones`) led the league in receiving touchdowns and tied for the league lead in overall touchdowns. If he had a slightly larger role in the Liberty offense, specifically their running game, he'd be a shoo-in for the final list. Cooter Bigsby (Wraiths, @timeconsumer) totally fell off the radar over the last half of the season, throwing nine picks in his last six games. So even though the Wraiths were the hottest team in the league right now (winners of ten of their last eleven, before getting bounced in the Wild Card Round), their QB is vulnerable. On the flip side, Adriana Falconi (Liberty, @enigmatic) seems to have fixed her INT woes. She only threw one pick in her last six games. I honestly wanted to put her higher, but it’s hard to find someone for her to pass, since she still has the most picks of any QB who isn’t a true rookie. Finally, Marquise Brown (Hawks, @YoungTB) probably would’ve made the top half-dozen if either he got more than 20 carries per game, which just seems light for someone in his situation or the Hawks made the playoffs, which is shocking to say the least. But he was still the league leader in rushing scores, so that has to count for something.

6. Raymond Vans (ARI, @karl) (Prev: 2nd), 98 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 FF, 3 FR, 19 sacks, 1 INT, 13 deflections, 1 TD, 1 blocked punt

Looking back at the start of the season, what Raymond Vans did just wasn’t sustainable, but even still I was expecting so much more out of Vans after the first batch of games this season. Looking at the positives, 19 sacks is really, really good. That’s the most anyone has had since Dan Miller and Godfrey King both hit that mark all the way back in Season 9, and back in those days, it was way easier to get to the quarterback. And also remember, they played one more game in Season 9 than they do now. However, nothing else leaps out and grabs you by the shoulders, not even the 98 tackles or the 13 deflections, which were both far eclipsed by other players, even at his position. But, back to the positives, even though he only excelled in one stat, he was still at least putting up numbers in every category. That kind of versatility is just not something you see a lot of in defenders. So because of that, Vans stays on the board, and will most likely be a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year (but not the winner…).

5. Sam Torenson (CHI, @Jonny2x) (Prev: 5th), 347 rushes, 1458 rush yards, 9 TD

Is the fact that Sam Torenson a true rookie slightly inflating his position on this board? Probably. Would he still be up here even if he was a veteran? Also probably. Even though he led the league in rushing attempts by a comfortable margin, he also led the league in rushing yards by a more comfortable margin, outrushing his nearest competitor (Terry Taffy) by more than 200 yards. Now granted, he only had one rushing touchdown in his last five games, which is not good, but he also averaged nearly 120 rushing yards in that same span. Also, his 1458 rushing yards are the most that a rookie has had since Season 11 when Jarrod Canton went for 1513. So, he’s definitely a lock for Offensive Rookie of the Year. The other candidates (probably Rose Jenkins and Corvo Havran) just aren’t anywhere near Torenson’s level. It’s over, go ahead and mail him the trophy. Thanks for playing, everyone else.

4. Vinny Valentine (OCO, @Unicorn) (Prev: 3rd), 81 receptions, 1392 rec yards, 12 TD

Vinny Valentine has the misfortune of being on a team that has so many good receiving threats, that it’s hard for him to jump out. If he got even a fifth of Johnny Blaze’s workload, his statline would look something like 100-1650-15, and then he’d be at the top of these rankings for sure. But, he’s not there, he’s here, and here is second in receptions and touchdowns, and first in yards, which will definitely net him Wide Receiver of the Year, and he’ll likely be a finalist for Offensive Player of the Year. In the last third of the season, he was anywhere between good and completely unguardable, as he only finished with less than 90 yards twice in the last half of the season: a respectable 7-72-1 line against the Yeti, and a disappointing 4-50-0 game in the finale against the Hawks. But those games were buoyed by monster games like an eight reception, 126 yard day versus Chicago, and a beastly 9-141-1 game against the Second Line. However he, Sunnycursed and Johnny Blaze took turns being the #1 guy on a weekly basis (except the aforementioned Week 11 against New Orleans, where they all were). As such, Sunnycursed just missed the cut on this list, Johnny Blaze got an honorable mention, and Vinny Valentine finds himself in the fourth spot.

3. Joliet L. Christ (SJS, @`AndrewWarren13`) (Prev: 4th), 3283 pass yards, 61.6% completion, 26 TD, 7 INT, 98.1 QB rating, 127 rushes, 810 yards, 5 TD

Joliet L. Christ hasn't thrown the most passing yards and TDs in the world, especially when compared to guys like Gus T.T. Showbiz and Cooter Bigsby. However, he is crushing it in every other major statistic. He's leading the league in completion percentage, fewest INTs, and touchdown to interception ratio, while being second in passer rating. And he finished ninth in the league in rushing yards, nearly tripling the yardage of the next best quarterback. He hasn’t run the ball too much over the last third of the season, with the exception of a Week 12 star-studded performance where he threw for five TDs and ran for more than 80 yards. Instead, he’s carving up defenses with his brutally efficient passing attack, rarely turning the ball over and putting the ball where it needed to be on a consistent basis. However, his week of the season wasn’t a great sign of things to come. He threw three picks directly to Logan Lejune, and nearly lost to the nearly winless Yeti. The postseason was a little better for Christ, but their offense was still stuck in neutral for the first half. Still though, Christ played like a legend this season, and will likely continue to be an MVP contender for years to come.

2. Danny Grithead (YKW, @Trautner) (Prev: NR), 91 tackles, 1 FR, 12 sacks, 10 INT, 20 deflections, 2 TD

After my last article, I had some people reach out to me and ask where Danny Grithead was. Well, at the time of that article going up, he was on my radar, but just outside. Now though? He’s inside, has taken off his shoes, and made himself a cup of hot cocoa. He exploded in the last third of the season with three absolute monster games, two of which are in the top three Defensive Performances of the season. In Week 9, he was the DeAngelo Hall to Wolfie McDummy’s Jay Cutler, picking him off four times and scoring one of them, while tacking on five deflections and a sack. Week 10: more destruction: ten tackles, two sacks, two deflections, two picks, and another pick-six against a Second Line team who were fighting for their playoff lives, making him one of only three players this season with multiple defensive touchdowns. And then in Week 12, against the Mountain West Conference-esque Austin Copperheads, 12 tackles, two sacks, and two deflections. Grithead’s ten interceptions on the season tied the all-time record for most INTs in a season with Isaiah Rashad all the way back in Season 1, where again they played a 14 game schedule, as opposed to the 13 games Grithead got his in. On top of that, his 12 sacks on the season were good enough for third in the league, and 20 deflections got him to fifth on that list. Top 5 in the league in picks, sacks, and deflections in one season. That’s gotta be an exclusive club.

1. Gus T.T. Showbiz (OCO, @Molarpistols) (Prev: 1st), 4428 pass yards, 60% completion, 34 TD, 10 INT, 100.7 QB rating

Gus T.T. Showbiz is the best player on the team who I think has the best odds to win the Ultimus. That’s a pretty darn good indicator of his worthiness of this top spot. Every other player has some trait or stat that you could point to and say “that will keep him from winning the MVP”. Grithead’s slow start, Christ’s lack of passing stats, Valentine’s workload, Torenson’s lack of receiving stats and relative youth, Vans’s slow finish. But you can’t do that with Gus T.T. Showbiz. He’s second in passing yards, just a single deep pass behind Bigsby. He’s second in completion percentage, less than two percentage points behind Christ. He’s second in passing touchdowns, just two behind Falconi. And he’s leading the league in passer rating. In fact, he’s now one of only three quarterbacks to have a season-long passer rating of over 100. The other two? Two surefire Hall of Famers, Mike Boss and Childish Gambino (twice). As for the on-the-field work, it’s just as pristine. The Offensive Top Performances leaderboard is littered with his work, with six appearances there, four of them in the second half of the season. He had a five-game stretch of throwing for more than 370 passing yards, and he only had one game on the entire season where he threw more than one interception, and in that game, he made up for it with six touchdowns. This is probably closer than any MVP race I’ve covered. I could probably make a compelling case for the entire top five on this list, but at the end of the day, in the opinion of this schmuck with no MVP votes or any sway in the contest’s final outcome, I think Gus T.T. Showbiz is the Season 16 MVP.

To even be mentioned in a list like this makes me happy, especially as a defensive rookie. Grievous is only just getting started in this league!

Grithead is the only player in the history of the league to record both 10+ sacks and interceptions in the same season. I'm not even sure it's ever been done in separate seasons.

the only thing that approaches it is S7 Ian Bavitz (8 INT, 13 sacks), but he lost the MVP to Mat Akselsen I believe

Pretty sure he's only the second player in the history of the league to get to double figures for interceptions, so that's a safe bet, I reckon.

Yeah, He’s only the second player to do so, so I think it’s down to Him and Showbiz.
