*Prospect Bowl Week 5 & 6 Game Summeries - goodfortunecoffee - 08-14-2019

Pomona Mongoose vs. East Cobras

The Cobras started out the game with a solid 11-play 59 yard drive that was cut short on a big third down sack by Thudd Kassel. G.Johnson would miss the chip shot FG. Pomona goes 3 and out and the Cobras put the first points on the board off a J.Cue 12 yard toss to C.Allen. 7-0 Cobras

In what would end up being the highlight of the game for Pomona, they went on an impressive 90 yard 15-play drive capped off by a 1 yard dive by Hank McCoy to tie the game up. 7-7

The next drive saw a pretty incredible J.Cue 19 yard scramble but a Baxter Chance third down sack would stall out the East Cobras. The rest of the 1st half there were 3 more combined punts without anything interesting happening. Halftime: 7-7

Pomona started the second half moving the ball well only for Victor Bravo to be picked off by Abernathy. The East Cobras then drove it all the way to pay dirt in 13 plays (12 of which were runs!) with Charles Allen nabbing his 2nd TD of the day. 13-7 Cobras

The Pomona Mongoose went 3 & out, and the Cobras yet again scores a touchdown, this time a 26 yard bomb(by DDS16 standards) to Jake Watson. This drive also featured probably my favorite play to watch of all 4 games this week. An insane 33 yard run by Hanyadi involving much zigging, zagging, and weird wiggles. 20-7 Cobras

The one-sided 2nd half continued as Pomona stalled after 6 plays and punted again, only for Jay Cue to throw another touchdown to Jake Watson, this time 7 yards. 9 play 83 yard drive here. This would be the final score, Pomona failing twice more to score any points. 27-7 Cobras final

Jay Cue managed to throw only 1 incompletion the entire game(!), earning him OPOTG and the Cobras outgained the Mongoose 395-244

Midwest Wolfpack vs. Flint Sun Tropics

Flint, per usual, went 3 & out right out of the gate and the Wolfpack went 58 yards down the field and scored on a Jake Utler 1 yard dive. 7-0 Wolfpack

On just the third play of the drive, the most overrated quarterback of all time, Gimmy Jaroppolo threw a pick to S. Little IV and although the Wolfpack only went 8 yards, that was enough after Charlie Day nailed a 53 yarder 10-0 Wolfpack

Gimmy J. actually hit Tyrone Biggums for a nice 26 yard gain on the next drive, but again they punted and again the Wolfpack drove willingly down the field 80 yards on 14 plays capped off by 8 yard TD run this time by Orien Drake. 17-0 Wolfpack

That would be all the Wolfpack points for the game, but sadly that was all they really needed. 5 straight combined punts would ensue (somewhere in there I made a 7 yard catch!), the Wolfpack would attempt another 50+ yard FG, but miss this time. Halftime 17-0 Wolfpack

3 straight combined drives of 3 & outs to begin the 2nd half (including a sack by Flint standout Wayne Howyanow) before finally Flint would score! Somehow I managed to run the ball 7 yards in 2 back-to-back carries which was enough to put us in FG range for Baxter Frost to put us on the board. 17-3 Wolfpack

After the Wolfpack and Tropics exchanged a punt each, including a forced fumble by Marlo Smart that would be re-recovered by Marcella Toriki, C.Beck would nab an interception off P.Helmet deep in Midwest territory. Flint got oh so close to the end zone, but a Jah Harris sack on 3rd and goal kept us out, and Frost hit a chip shot to shorten the deficit. 17-6 Wolfpack

Despite a 20+ yard completion by each team, they would combine for 4 more punts before again P.Helmet would throw an INT in their own redzone, this time to Otto VanJensen. Deja vu, the Tropics failed to capitalize for 6 thanks to a 3rd and goal 1 yard gain by Yours Truly when we needed 3. Sigh. One more FG. The Wolfpack would run out the clock before Flint could disappoint any more. 17-9 Wolfpack Final

Philip Helmet actually struggled worse than Gimmy J. this game, but the Midwest Wolfpack had a far superior run game outgaining Flint 179-91 led by OPOTG winner Orien Drake.

Midwest Wolfpack vs. East Cobra

East Cobras come out shaky with a punt after 5 plays, and it was blocked even, by Wozniak. This gave the Wolfpack great starting field position to start the game. Converting a big 4th and 4 with a Jake Utler 8 yard run, Midwest got off to another great start with B.Daldwin catching a 4 yard toss from Helmet for a TD. 7-0 Wolfpack

After a 30 yard KR by Hanyadi, the Cobras would put together their best drive of the day. 2 big completions between arguably the best QB-WR duo in the prospect bowl, Jay Cue & Jake Watson, that combined for 50 yards! No matter. J.Cue scrambled for a loss (sack?) on 3rd & Goal and G.Johnson missed essentially an old-fashioned extra point, or a 20 yard FG. Midwest would get some yardage despite nearly losing the ball from an M.Ammons strip and punting away. They exchanged 3 & outs before Jay Cue fumbled it away. Forced by Chico De La Aqua and recovered by S.Little the 4th. Taking advantage of the short field, Orien Drake would pound it in for an 8 yard TD. 14-0 Wolfpack

Despite moving the ball 47 yards, the Cobras' fumblitis would continue as Jake Watson coughs it up by the hand of M'WehWordson. They each exchanged punts and then Midwest would put together an 11 play drive only for a 29 yard FG to get blocked. The following play Jay Cue would get thumped by J.Wozniak, who had a career day, and the 1st half ended. Halftime 14-0 Wolfpack

After a Wolfpack 3 & out, J. Cue would fumble it once more because why not. Marlo Smart forced it and De La Aqua recovers. Still little offense, they each exchange punts (including Espinosa pinning Midwest on their own 1!). Yet again the Wolfpack put together an impressive 13 play 82 yard drive and yet again they miss a FG. After a 3 & out from East, the Midwest Wolfpack would drive it one more time on 10 plays & 59 yards and actually make a FG. That would be the last points on the board after 3 more combined punts and a turnover on downs by the Cobras Final 17-0 Wolfpack

Again the Midwest Wolfpack ran the ball tremendously, winning the yardage battle 212-147 with 98 & 78 yards coming from J.Utler & O.Drake respectively.

Pomona Mongoose vs Flint Sun Tropics

Flint came out ready to go with some actual offense! A 55 yard drive, including a mind-blowing and earth shattering 10 yard run by Yours Truly, led to a 35 yd FG and a promising start. 3-0 Sun Tropics

Pomona moved the ball a bit before Wayne Howyanow would snag a pick. The Sun Tropics had great field position, and of course did nothing and settled for another field goal. At least were making em. 6-0 Sun Tropics

The Mongoose would again turn it over in their own territory. This time Paco McTaco would get stripped by VanJensen & R.Bunchess covered it up. No first down for the Sun Tropics but, again, another FG. Could Flint's defense actually carry this team to a victory here? 9-0 Sun Tropics

Pomona would actually go 12 plays and 50 yards, despite a Bjorn Ironside roughing the passer penalty which knowing Bjorn he probably literally piledrived poor V.Bravo to the turf. Nonetheless Pomona would turn it over on downs, only for Flint to go 3 & out. Then finally Pomona woke up and went 89 yards in 12 plays, capped off by a 13 yard TD pass to D.Cope. This TD pass play, by the way, included V.Bravo literally scrambling around for 7 full seconds before finding his man. 9-7 Sun Tropics

After another beautiful 3 & out by Flint, the Mongoose would convert a 3rd & 10 with an 11 yard run and eventually kick a FG, thus ending the Tropics lead and the golden age of weeks 5 & 6. Such happy memories. Halftime came shortly after. Halftime 10-9 Mongoose

To start the second half, the Mongoose would complete 2 short passes, then manage to run the ball 9 straight times all the way to Flint's 9 yard line, only to miss the easy FG. Gimmy somehow completed a 26 yard pass to T.Biggums, then they did nothing and punted. Pomona went 57 yards including a 17 yard scamper by McTaco to nail another FG to go up 4. ...and that would be all the scoring left in this game. 3 more combined punts, a second INT by Flint MVP Howyanow followed by a B.Frost missed 40 yarder and 1 more punt was all she wrote. Final 13-9 Mongoose

Pomona would outrun Flint an astounding & embarrassing 235-40! 2 Pomona players hit triple digits, Paco McTaco with 104 & Hank McCoy with 103. Why I got 14 carries and Marcella Toriki only got 6 is beyond me.
