*Fan Review of NSFL Week 1 - IsaStarcrossed - 08-27-2019

The first week of the NSFL kicked off last night and as a fan I had an absolute blast. It was my first chance to really get a look at regular season action in this league and it was immensely enjoyable. You had standouts, you had disappointments, you had close games, and you had deceptive games. It was everything I wanted for my first experience here and I figured I'd give the action a quick rundown!

CHI @ PHI 24-27, Liberty win. The game between Chicago and Philadelphia was anything but clean. It was a game full of miscues, penalties, and costly mistakes that culminated in a game that surprised and confused everyone. It seemed early on that Chicago was going to dominate this game throughout. At the end of the first half, most fans thought that we had the biggest blowout of the night on our hands as the Butchers led 24-7 and Philadelphia didn't seem to have much fight left. An interception of Falconi that was returned for a touchdown really seemed to take the air out of this team and they would need a miracle to come back. That was my thought. It turns out that you don't need miracles, you just need really bad play by Chicago. 10 second half penalties crippled the Butchers and made it easy for Liberty to start snowballing back into the game. Offensive drives, stalled by penalties. Defensive stops continued by penalties. Chicago couldn't get out of their own way and it was all capped off by an interception from Jenkins on their final drive of the game. You could look at offense, you could look at defense, but at the end of the day there was only one number that mattered in this game. 13-98. 13 penalties for 98 yards was the sloppy mess that cost Chicago. Congratulations to Philadelphia for pouncing on those mistakes and making the best of it.

COL @ YKW 23-31, Wraiths win. This game started off as one of the more exciting showdowns in week one. Blindsiding everyone, the Colorado Yet jumped out to an early start in the first half and led the game 20-14. They were the underdogs and everyone knew it, but they came out with high energy and a drive to win. Unfortunately, that stalled in the second half. They had moved the ball just enough to keep the game interesting, racking up 150 yards of offense in the first half while capitalizing on Yellowknife mistakes to put the game in their hands. Going into the second half, the Yeti fell apart. They no longer seemed capable of moving the ball and Yellowknife came out with a vengeance. This was a team that had a serious talk at half time, put their mistakes behind them, and then came out and dominated in the second half. By game end, the Wraiths had almost double the yards of the Yeti and had absolutely dominated the time of possession. Cooter Bigsby showed some poise throughout the game by never slowing down despite an early mistake that put his team behind. He had his ups and downs, but the best quarterbacks know that mistakes happen and you have to keep throwing to win. The big surprise on the day though was Jerrod Canton who racked up 105 yards and three touchdowns on the day. This looked to be a breakout game for him and we're all looking forward to seeing if he can continue that production.

BAL @ ARI 26-36, Outlaws win. In what could have been game of the week, we ended up with a game that at the end of the day just wasn't that interesting. These teams played evenly basically across the board and that showed in the first half when the Outlaws only led 19-16. But then early in the second half, a costly fumble by Corey Trevor resulted in a lead that the Hawks never could quite come back from. It was the debut of Dorfus Jimbo as the primary halfback for the Hawks and it showed what he had flashes of last season. This is a guy who can carry the load for you week in and week out. He put on an inspiring performance, racking up 139 yards on 26 carries. It simply wasn't enough due to his opposition on the other side locking down the entire game. MVP of this game and possibly player of the week candidate goes to none other than Slim Shady. This man put on a clinic out there, racking up 181 all purposed yards and two scores. He was all over the place and just what the doctor ordered on a night where Arizona needed someone to step up.

NOLA @ AUS 31-10, Second Line win. At first glance of the scoreboard, you would think this was the kind of deafening one sided romp that would crush the morale of Copperheads fans. On closer inspection, that simply wasn't the case.It surprised most people that the game was tied 10-10 at half time. What surprised me more was that Austin failed to keep it close in the second. They were competitive in yardage, they had more first downs, they had more third down conversions, they had less penalties, they controlled the time of possession, and they won the turnover battle. By all indications, this is a game that should have been close throughout. Unfortunately the end-zone eluded the Copperheads in the second half as they failed to produce any points despite winning in almost every statistical category that matters. This game saw the debut of first overall pick Ashley Owens and he didn't disappoint. He led the Copperheads in all purpose yards, racking up 130 total yards from scrimmage this game. He did what he could, but it wasn't quite enough as Stan Francisco and Forest Gump on the other side made a one two punch that refused to be slowed on the other side. Francisco posted a QB rating of 106.2 while Gump amassed 116 yards and two scores. When you dive in, this game was much closer than the score indicates, but at the end of the day points are all that matter.

OCO @ SJS 24-31, Sabercats win. This game looked close on paper and yet most everyone had picked Orange County over San Jose in this one. San Jose proved them wrong. In what ended up being the game of the week, you had an explosive game with a ton of offense that came down to the wire. Orange County took the early lead and went into halftime up 17-7. Then San Jose had the single most dominant quarter of football in the first week of the NSFL as they went on a 17-0 run. The Otters tried valiantly, but at the end of the day four straight pass attempts to Johnny Blaze from San Jose's nine yard line fell short and dashed Orange County's hopes. On the deep dive, this game was every bit as close on paper as it was on the box score. 18 to 18 first downs, six third down conversions a piece, 410 yards to 434, two turnovers each, time of possession that was only one minute apart. This game was exciting and came down to the line and we couldn't have asked for more. Joliet Christ put up the best performance of the weekend for a quarterback, throwing for 358 yards and two scores while taking care of the ball the entire game. He was just what the doctor ordered and he was absolutely the difference maker in this game for San Jose. Both of these teams put on a show and I look forward to seeing them hit the field again.

I appreciate you guys sticking with me through this and I look forward to doing more of these in the future. Hope you enjoyed and see you next time!

Great article. Agreed fully on our game. It was a closer one than it looks.
