*Week 1: Movers and Shakers - IsaStarcrossed - 08-27-2019 This is a new segment I plan to do every week where we look at NSFL results and talk about the guys who did well in game and those who didn't do so well. We're going to have movers who have had breakout performances, movers who disappointed, and shakers who may change the landscape of the league if they remain consistent. Without further explanation, we're going to start with the offense, so lets dive in. Quarterbacks: Joliet L. Christ: Mover, going up. 69.6% completion rating, 358 yards, 2 TDs, 107 quarterback rating. Christ was easily the best quarterback of week one, making big time throws and minimizing mistakes to lead the Saber Cats to victory in the closest game of the week. If he continues performances like this one, you're looking at the best quarterback in the league and a guy who might be able to lead San Jose to a real title shot. Franklin Armstrong: Shaker. Armstrong didn't have the absolute best performance on the weekend, but it was his first game for Orange County since moving up from the DSFL. He seemed to have some nerves early and made a few rookie mistakes, but those cleaned up as the game went on. He managed to keep the Otters competitive in what was the closest match up of the week and though he threw two picks, his mistakes weren't what cost the Otters the game. He made some clutch throws and even had Orange County leading for a while. He had a chance to tie it up at the end of regulation against San Jose, but two drops by Johnny Blaze cut chances of a victory short. If he can clean up around the edges and keep his poise, Armstrong can prove to be the future of this Orange County squad. Adriana Falconi: Mover, slipping down. 53.8% completion, 263 yards, 2 TDs, 2 picks, 70.8 quarterback rating. These aren't the numbers of a quarterback who was one of the best in the NSFL last season. Falconi set the league on fire in season 16 and carried Philadelphia all the way to the Ultimus finals. The common belief was that she'd be capable of a repeat performance this season. Due to having one of the worst quarterback performances of the week, this was a game where Falconi needed Chicago to hand feed Philadelphia a win through mental mistakes and a second half collapse or else the Liberty would be starting 0-1. This offense goes as Falconi goes and while one game doesn't make a pattern, she'll need to step it up if she wants to get this team back to the finals. Running Backs Slim Shady: Mover, going up. 130 yards, 5 yards per carry, two scores, and 4 catches for 51 yards was a scoreline of the man who I felt proved everyone wrong. Shady seemed to be slipping down the ranks of the top backs in the league with many people looking at him as a second option at best, but he came out during a game where Arizona needed their best offensive weapon to show up and he put on an absolute clinic. Shady was all over the field making the Hawks defense look silly in route to a classic performance. This guy looks to be chasing the best year of his career if he can keep it up. Dorfus Jimbo: Shaker. Jimbo has spend his career to this point playing second fiddle in a crowded backfield. He's always had flashes and finally he's getting his chance to be RB1. He took that chance and ran with it. With 139 yards and 5.3 yards a carry, Jimbo was the highlight of Baltimore's loss to the Outlaws. He showed that he's more than capable of carrying this team where they need to go and should have an absolute breakout season that could make Baltimore a contender this year. Marquise Brown: Mover, stumbling down the ladder. 87 yards with just 4.1 yards a carry wasn't exactly an inspiring showing for Philadelphia's RB1. Coming into the season, Brown has been widely regarded as one of the top backs in this league. A lot of people were expecting him to have big performances throughout and to help carry this team to a second championship performance. He's the guy the Liberty should be able to lean on when Falconi is having an off day and he just couldn't pick up the slack in this game. Hopefully things shape up for him as the season progresses. Wide Receiver Sunnycursed: Mover, high rising. Last season, Sunny was one of the best receivers in the league while playing secondary to Valentine. In his debut as Orange County's number one, he put up 6 catches for 128 yards. He made himself an open target for young quarterback Franklin Armstrong and showed that he may take the mantle of top pass catcher this season now that he'll be the first option more often. Vinny Valentine: Shaker. Normally a proven commodity isn't listed as a shaker, but Valentine changed teams in the off season. He left Orange County to head out to Arizona and give the S16 champs a shiny new weapon to play with. Going in, there was some uncertainty around if Valentine could again be a top producer with a new quarterback and a new system. He quickly squashed those questions to the tune of four catches for 117 yards and a score. One of Arizona's biggest weaknesses last season was their passing game and now that they have Valentine, it'll definitely shake things up. Jordan von Matt: Mover, a small tumble. Von Matt was one of the top guys in the league last season as the primary option in Philadelphia. There looked to be no reason he couldn't repeat his success this season, but against the Butchers he looked like he struggled to get open. 4 catches for only 69 yards and a score. Even when he did get open, he didn't really have any separation and wasn't able to do much with it. Von Matt is normally far more explosive than this and I hope to see him bounce back in the future. Tight Ends and Flex Backs Cameron Olsen: Mover, climbing up the ranks. As the 16th NSFL season progressed, Olsen emerged as one of the better receiving threats at his position. TEs don't often get a lot of glory outside of the trenches, so it was unclear if he'd be able to have a repeat performance in season 17. He started off strong with a seven catch, 85 yard, one score game. He repeatedly moved the sticks for San Jose in a game where every first down was necessary for victory. He looked open the whole game and Christ was able to find his big bodied target on a multitude of occasions. If he can keep it up, he'll definitely take the best tight end title this season. Jerrod Canton: Shaker. Canton was a reliable player last season for Yellowknife, but he wasn't the type of guy to wow you. That changed this week when he put up 105 all purpose yards and three scores. This man was an absolute monster for the Wraiths and in a game that looked close at half time, they needed someone to step up. Jerrod Canton came completely from left field and showed he had the potential to be a star. More performances like this from him and Yellowknife can really hit an offensive stride this season. Johnny Blaze: Mover, falling to the bottom. Last season, Blaze showed his abilities by being one of the most explosive flex backs in the NSFL. He put on a show and was everything his team needed him to be and more. This season he made a position change to tight end though. He is not adjusting well. Blaze was one of the most anticipated role players coming into this season and everyone wanted to see how this position swap would impact him. Three catches for 35 yards was not inspiring. It may just take him time to adjust to the new role, but he simply did not look as explosive as last season in his first game. That is my look at the offensive movers and shakers for week one. I look forward to week two to see if these guys continue their current trajectory or if everything turns on a dime. Thanks for going through this with me and feel free to share your opinions! *Week 1: Movers and Shakers - SwagSloth - 08-27-2019 Great article idea. And, concerning Slim Shady, I think anyone who took a chance on him in fantasy will be pleasantly surprised with his production this season. *Week 1: Movers and Shakers - Sweetwater - 08-27-2019 Killin it dude, you're gonna be richer than infinite at this rate. Only thing I'd say is that Blaze is a TE, he's just listed as FB in the sim for balance reasons. *Week 1: Movers and Shakers - IsaStarcrossed - 08-27-2019 (08-27-2019, 01:27 PM)Sweetwater Wrote:Killin it dude, you're gonna be richer than infinite at this rate. Wait, he was a TE last season too? The index actually shows him as a TE this season, but I could have sworn he was listed as a FB last! Was he just played like FB a lot, so that's where he ended up listed? (Still learning!) *Week 1: Movers and Shakers - White Cornerback - 08-27-2019 (08-27-2019, 08:08 PM)IsaStarcrossed Wrote:Wait, he was a TE last season too? Now that you mention it, I think I remember reading something about that a few days ago. Thanks! *Week 1: Movers and Shakers - Sweetwater - 08-27-2019 (08-27-2019, 03:24 PM)White Cornerback Wrote:simmer man would know better but I believe if they're TE and listed at WR then they go down as a FB in sim, think its the DiMirio rule This. A TE playing every snap at WR and set as the primary receiver will break the game. Same with RB. Setting them as a FB prevents this without ruining the player. |
