*Hawks Mortgaging Their Future? - Huskies311 - 09-17-2019

The Hawks, coming off of a disappointing season last year, are now right in the thick of the playoff race after winning 5 straight games to be in a three-way tie for first in the NSFC. The boost mainly comes from two trades.

The first trade I’ll talk about:

PHI Phi Liberty receive:
Hawks S18 4th
Hawks S18 6th

BAL Baltimore Hawks receive:
Vander Jones - 646 TPE

This trade was made since the Hawks lost backup running back Corey Trevor in the next trade I’ll talk about. A 4th and 6th round pick may not seem like a steep price to pay but the next draft class is loaded with talent and Vander Jones is retiring after this season. This trade is a textbook win-now trade, but in Baltimore the hopes for Jones to be a good complimentary back with Dorfus Jimbo is high. Dorfus can get the yards, Jones can get the touchdowns (is the hope).

If we can win this season this trade looks great. If not, this one could definitely hurt.

The second trade is the big one:

OCO Otters receive:
Yulic Nagasawa – 500 TPE
Corey Trevor - 190 TPE
S18 1st round pick
If trevor is on the otter’s roster after S18, Hawks receive 2M in S18 Cap space.

BAL Baltimore Hawks receive:
Sunnycursed - 1245 TPE
S18 3rd Round pick

Let’s be honest here: losing a 1st round pick hurts. It especially hurts when it makes 3 drafts in a row without having one. Even so, getting one of the highest earners in the league to compliment Maddox and Espeeyeeseetee has generated a lot of excitement in the locker room. Getting back a 3rd round pick is good too, though I’m probably biased, since I was a 3rd round pick. In the long run, the Hawks have definitely mortgaged there future a bit with this trade. This is especially true if Mr. Sunny Chest leaves after this season.

The Otters get 2 inactives but this should still bolster depth until they hit regression, and they get another first round pick in a very good S18 draft. This works out as the Otters wait for Armstrong to grow into an elite QB in the league and become the second best S15 QB behind Gimmy.

Conclusion:
Whether we win the Ultimus or not, I still believe the Hawks have enough young actives to at least compete for playoff spots for the next season or two, though concerns about draft capital are very valid. Regression is starting to hit for a couple key people, namely our corners, Ben Horne, and Verso so the window for the Hawks is closing quickly, even if it’s after S18.

The Liberty and the Otters also set themselves up well for the future gaining draft capital in a large and active class. It may take a season or two to see who the real winners are (especially from the Otters and Hawks trade) so it’ll be interesting to check back in a few months on this.

142 more TPE than Dorfus and Vander barely plays...why even trade for Vander? hurting the team having Dorfus continue to start.

That five speed looks a lot more important for the feature back who has the highest yards per carry in the league at 4.8. What were Vander's yards per carry last time he was a feature back? 4.1? Yeah, I think I'm going with the more productive horse on this one.

S15: 277 att, 1,195 yds, 9 TD ll 48 rec, 241 yds
S16: 148 att, 612 yds, 2 TD ll 68 rec, 810 yds, 13 TD

Hmmm I seem pretty productive. Two time Pro Bowl in only two seasons. Yeah production is the only thing I've done.

1. You retired and we want to keep Dorfus happy. Didn't even realize you were still active.
2. You two are running as a committee which improves win %, which is all I care about.

Yep, just like iseedoug said, we look at win % as our bottom line. So statistically, the way we set up for that game was just how we wanted it--gave the team the best chance at winning. Who knows, next game may be different. We take it one game at a time, but we traded for Vander because he made our team better overall. That's it.
