*S17 RB Rankings - Week 13 - SwagSloth - 09-20-2019

The final results for S17 are in. With no more regular games to play, let’s see how the rankings turned out once and for all...

Honorable Mention - Aksel Danielsson CHI @[JSS
868 Rushing Yards (4.5 YPC), 8 Rushing TDs
6 catches for 74 Receiving Yards, 1 Receiving TD

Previous Rank:Honorable Mention (No Change)

Honorable Mention - Marquise Brown PHI @[YoungTB]
897 Rushing Yards (4.2 YPC), 5 Rushing TDs
35 catches for 212 Receiving Yards, 2 Receiving TDs

Previous Rank: Honorable Mention (No Change)

Honorable Mention - Morgan Marshall :wraiths @Baron1898
834 Rushing Yards (4.2 YPC), 9 Rushing TDs
54 catches for 322 Receiving Yards, 2 Receiving TD

Previous Rank: #9 (Fall)

#10 - Terry Taffy COL @KingCollins
1154 Rushing Yards (4.0 YPC), 7 Rushing TDs
28 catches for 162 Receiving Yards, 2 Receiving TDs

After dancing in and out of the top 10 over the course of the season, Taffy finally ends the season on the right side of the list. Over the last 2 weeks, he added 188 rushing yards, helping cement his spot at #10. Morgan Marshall was close on his heels, but it was Taffy who ended up edging him out for this coveted spot.
Previous Rank: Honorable Mention (Rise)

#9 - Ashley Owens AUS @run_CMC
749 Rushing Yards (4.0 YPC), 4 Rushing TDs
80 catches for 671 Receiving Yards, 3 Receiving TDs

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Ashley Owens this season after he was drafted 1st overall by the Copperheads. Many expected him to put up a similar season to Sam Torensen in S16, but it’s easy to forget just how competitive the NSFL can be. And sometimes it takes rookies time to find their footing. Fortunately for Owens, while he didn’t crack the top 5, he still carved out a vital role for himself, putting up strong numbers on the ground even while part of a RBBC. Owens was also able to accrue over 600 yards in the air and over 1400 yards from scrimmage. He also ended the season as the RB with most catches, surpassing even Jerrod Canton in that category. An excellent start for Owens, who will look to build on that success for seasons to come.
Previous Rank: #8 (Fall)

#8 - Tyler Swift NOLA @`BayleyIsland`
636 Rushing Yards (4.4 YPC), 9 Rushing TDs
52 catches for 680 Receiving Yards, 1 Receiving TD

Of all the RBs on this list, Swift probably had the best improvement over the last 2 weeks. After walking into week 12 with only 4 rushing Touchdpwns, Swift found the end zone 5 times in his final 2 games. It was a pair of performances that vaulted him up the list 2 spots. He was part of a RBBC with Forrest Gump and relied on the air attack for over half of his yards from scrimmage, but he remains a talented back that can be counted on when the situation calls for him to step up.
Previous Rank: #10 (Rise)

#7 - Mako Mendonca AUS @Mooty99
790 Rushing Yards (4.2 YPC), 5 Rushing TDs
66 catches for 668 Receiving Yards, 4 Receiving TDs

It’s been a relatively quiet 2 weeks for Mendonca, but he was a hot topic of discussion as he rose up the list over the course of the season. Like Owens, he thrives in both the passing and ground game, allowing both men to alternate roles for the team. Mendonca is still young and appears to have a bright future ahead of him.
Previous Rank: #6 (Fall)

#6 - Dorfus Jimbo BAL @ScorpXCracker
1181 Rushing Yards (4.9 YPC), 2 Rushing TDs
32 catches for 236 Receiving Yards, 1 Receiving TD

Much talk has centered around Dorfus Jimbo’s lack of Touchdowns this season. Personally, I think it has more to do with Baltimore’s pass-heavy approach than any real “inability to score in the Red Zone” for Dorfus. But he’s a back that excels on the ground and, under a different scheme, he would probably be in the top 5, maybe even top 3. Still, he came close with minimal Touchdowns to help boost his score, letting his yards carry him. He’s the RB with the 3rd highest rushing yards and holds claim to the highest YPC of any RB with over 100 rushing yards. This was a tough season for Dorfus, but it was still a huge performance by many metrics and hopefully a step forward for another very young player, which you’ll notice is a common theme in this list.
Previous Rank: #7 (Rise)

#5 - Forrest Gump NOLA @TomHanks
1082 Rushing Yards (4.0 YPC), 10 Rushing TDs
45 catches for 374 Receiving Yards, 2 Receiving TDs

This season, Forest has spent much of his time operating as the gatekeeper of the top 5. If you want to get in, you have to get past him.... and many were unable to do so. In addition to breaking 1000 rushing yards and over 1400 yards from scrimmage, Forrest was able to score 12 Touchdowns. There are a lot of incredible RBs on this list and Forrest fits the continued trend of “young RB on the rise”, but his consistent performance through the season is also to be commended. He established himself as a key player early on and remained in the top 5 all season.
Previous Rank: #5 (No Change)

#4 - Jerrod Canton YKW @Sweetwater
276 Rushing Yards (3.9 YPC), 0 Rushing TDs
79 catches for Receiving 1183 Yards, 13 Receiving TDs

I talked in the week 11 rankings about the controversial ranking of Canton. As a pure rusher, he’s easy to forget about, but as a hybrid offensive player that can contribute at a number of skill positions, he certainly deserves to be in this discussion. The algorithm that I use is designed to highlight players for their work as both rushers and receivers and Canton is exactly the type of player we sought to bring attention to, someone that would get overlooked in the traditional index rankings despite being valuable in other areas. There are still those that might prefer to call Canton a WR, but as long as he’s listed as a RB (or FB), he’ll be part of this discussion. He currently holds claim to the most receiving yards held by a RB and also has the most receiving Touchdowns by any player, RB or otherwise. Hats off to Canton for an excellent performance this season.
Previous Rank: #4 (No Change)

#3 - Slim Shady ARI @J.G.10
1047 Rushing Yards (4.7 YPC), 10 Rushing TDs
54 catches for 434 Receiving Yards, 1 Receiving TD

Slim Shady spent much of the season at #1 or #2, but ultimately falls to #3 on the back of a weaker final 2 weeks. The truth is that, while Shady is a vastly talented performer, he doesn’t top the list in any single category. Even his previous claim to highest YPC was taken over by Dorfus Jimbo. Still, those are some impressive stats as a whole and it’s not hard to see why he was able to remain in the top 3.
Previous Rank: #1 (Fall)

#2 - Sam Torensen CHI @Jonny2x
1478 Rushing Yards (4.4 YPC), 10 Rushing TDs
11 catches for 95 Receiving Yards, 1 Receiving TD

S16’s top RB started off slow, but he’s been a constant part of the top rankings ever since. In truth, he came drastically close to #1, missing it by only a few points. But #2 is still #2 and the difference was enough to avoid a tie. Nonetheless, he holds the most rushing yards of any RB on this list and, with a strong YPC, he was undeniably the best pure rusher this season. And, despite the fact that almost 94% of his yards came on the ground, he still had the most yards from scrimmage by a wide margin. Only on his second season in the league, Torensen is already on his way to a legendary career and, while much of the talent on this list has been labeled as “promising”, Torensen has clearly exceeded all expectations and may be a true game-changer in the long run.
Previous Rank: #2b (No Change)

#1 - Apollo Reed OCO @NylarthePhoenix
1246 Rushing Yards (4.4 YPC), 11 Rushing TDs
33 catches for 234 Receiving Yards, 4 Receiving TDs

Reed remains a shining star for the Otters organization. Recent moves by the team have suggested that they’re focused on the future and, with players like Apollo Reed, it’s hard not to see that working out well for them. Reed holds claim to the most rushing Touchdowns as well as the most combined Touchdowns by any non-Quarterback in the league. He’s proven himself as one of the most versatile players in the league and it’s earned him this spot as the top RB on this list. While Torensen may be the purists’ choice for top RB, Reed’s ability to contribute Touchdowns both as a rusher and receiver have made him an elite weapon that his team is proud to call one of their own. And, for my money, it’s made him the best RB in the league this season. Congrats, Apollo Reed..

*S17 RB Rankings - Week 13 - Jonny2x - 09-20-2019

Wow, thanks for the series all season long. I would like to apologize to all fantasy owners out there that believed in me. Danielsson pilfered way too many touchdowns and I didn't live up to the number one pick.
