*NSFL MVP Rankings (S17, Through Week 13) - nickyvmlp - 09-23-2019

That’s it, everyone. Sound the alarms, the 17th regular season of the NSFL is in the bag. Who had the best season in the majors? Let’s not waste any more time and find out. Honorable mentions, go.

Slim Shady (Outlaws, @J.G.10) had a terrible final two weeks of the season, where he finished with 45 and 64 rushing yards, and no scores, so he nearly tumbled out of the honorables. Errol Maddox (Hawks, @PigSnout) had a strong game against Orange County, but was held to just a single reception in the finale against New Orleans. Quentin Sinclair (Yeti, @MaxGnarland) hopped into the mix with a three-INT game against Arizona that ended up giving him the most INTs on the season with seven. Cooter Bigsby (Wraiths, @timeconsumer) has a subpar couple of games, including a three-pick game against the Copperheads. Vinny Valentine (Outlaws, @Unicorn) climbed up the honorable list with a pair of 100-yard games to close the season. And Apollo Reed (Otters, @NylarthePhoenix) did alright in both games but it wasn’t enough for him to make the final list. Speaking of…

6) Jerrod Canton (@Sweetwater) (Prev.: 3rd) YKW: 79 catches, 1183 rec yards, 13 TDs

That was not the kind of finish Jerrod Canton wanted to see. In his last two games of the season, he had just 90 receiving yards. That’s absurdly bad by his standards, especially the 3-29-1 line he put up against San Jose. He at least scored in both games, but that’s the bare minimum we’ve come to expect from Jerrod. The only question now is whether he’ll be in the running for RB of the Year or WR of the Year. If it’s the former, he has no chance as Sam Torenson would run him over. But if he’s eligible for WR of the Year, he has a legit shot at that, as he was third in receiving yards and first in touchdowns, comfortably. I’m sure he’s got his fingers crossed waiting for the awards show.

5) Corvo Havran (@Raven) (Prev.: 6th) BAL: 3590 pass yards, 59.8% completion, 31 TDs, 11 INTs, 95.5 QB Rating

The Hawks have looked like the team to beat since they made the moves to get Sunnycursed and Vander Jones, and Corvo has stepped up his game accordingly. He did pretty well against Orange County, throwing two scores and hitting 300 passing yards, though he did throw a pick. Against New Orleans, he was even better, going for 273 yards and three scores, although it was in a surprising losing effort. Luckily, his playoff performances aren’t counted in MVP consideration because he looked about as bad as you could look leading a team to a 40-6 win. He’ll be a finalist for the MVP most likely, but he’s the longest of long shots to win.

4) Joliet L. Christ (@`AndrewWarren13`) (Prev.: 2nd) SJS: 3627 pass yards, 60.7% completion, 21 TDs, 5 INTs, 94.3 QB Rating, 98 carries, 338 rush yards, 2 TDs

Now we get into the players who have a real shot at MVP, and we start with the end of an era. Joliet L. Christ took home co-MVP honors back in Season 13, but early in this season, he looked like he could finally win it on his own. That might not be the case this season, but at least his last regular-season game was a dominant win, where he even got to run pretty effectively, picking up 63 rushing yards to go along with 281 passing yards and three TDs. Just don’t look at what happened against Yellowknife, that’s best left to history. Even if his MVP odds are pretty low, at least he’ll have an exciting battle for QB of the Year with Corvo Havran. Joliet, it was a pleasure to catch passes from you. Enjoy retirement.

3) Raymond Vans (@karl) (Prev.: 4th) ARI: 121 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FF, 16 sacks, 1 INT, 23 deflections

For the second straight season, Raymond Vans led the league in sacks. He was also one deflection and four tackles away from a shared lead in those two categories as well. Nearly leading the league in three major defensive categories worked well for Danny Grithead last year, so he’s got a good shot here. He ended up with 15 tackles in Week 12 against the Yeti, which I think is a season-high across the entire league. And he was up to his usual tricks in a Week 13 beatdown of the Liberty, where he collected ten tackles, four deflections, and a sack. Last year, he had MVP honors yanked away from him in the last quarter of the season, but this year, I think he’s got a realistic shot.

2) Danny Grithead (@Trautner) (Prev.: 5th) YKW: 93 tackles, 2 TFLs, 3 FFs, 1 FR, 14 sacks, 3 INTs, 23 deflections, 2 safeties, 1 TD

When Danny Grithead is on his A-game, it’s more like an SSS-rank, 5-star, MIRACLE game. In his last two games of the season, he did exactly what he needed to do to get himself into prime MVP contention. Week 12 vs. San Jose, he had six tackles, a TFL, a sack, a forced fumble, and a deflection. Then in Week 13, 11 tackles, two sacks, and a whopping six deflections. If you look at Grithead’s and Vans’s stats, they’re equal in deflections, while Vans has two more sacks and nearly thirty more tackles. But Grithead has the huge edge in two big categories: takeaways, with his six to Vans’s two, and points scored, 10 to 0. I think that could be the deciding factor on who takes Defensive Player of the Year. Unless what happened last year happens again, and DPotY is reserved for the runner-up and the winner takes MVP. Kinda depends on what happens with the last guy, who is…

1) Sam Torenson (@Jonny2x) (Prev.: 1st) CHI: 334 carries, 1478 rush yards, 10 TDs

Sam Torenson has reached that unmistakeable John Cena-esque level where him winning would almost be the boring option. And it’s only his second season in the league (which I guess would make him more like Roman Reigns instead of Cena). In his last two games, he racked up the yards, 135 against New Orleans and 121 against Orange County, and he did so on pretty good efficiency, 4.7 yards per rush both times. But he had no rushing scores, which is going to make this race that much tighter. Ultimately, I think it’ll come down to the top 3 on this list, and if I were a betting man, I’d take Torenson, but I also wouldn’t be shocked by any of the outcomes. Will Grithead repeat? Will Vans get revenge for last year? Will Torenson establish himself as a new face of the league? Or can one of the outsiders shock the world? We’ll find out soon.
