(S18) - PT4 - Fall

Complete the weekly Point Task to earn 3 TPE! All written responses must be at least 200 words. All graphic responses must show at least some effort. Do not claim this TPE until it has been graded and posted to the S18 claim thread. Also, if you try to build your word count by being super repetitive and rambling on, you will not get full credit.

This task is due next Sunday, November 10th, at 11:59 EST. Have fun and get writing!

Written Option: Right now it is really starting to feel like football season… At least for those of us Northerners. The weather is beginning to change and pass happy offenses are learning how to deal with the wind and rain, and heaven forbid, snow… How does your team prepare for games in the elements? What do you different with your game plan? Who on your team gets better in cold weather games?

OR...

Graphic Option: Create a graphic of you or your teammates doing a fall activity, like raking leaves, throwing the football around in sweaters, or going on hay-rack rides together. I know it’s dumb, but give me a break, I love this time of year!

Our coaches have taken a bit of an extreme approach to preparing the New Orleans Second Line for the harsh elements that winter brings. Even though we have an indoor practice facility, and often play inside in domes, our coaches felt it was wise to bus us to a nearby high school (god the field was in crappy condition) and make us practice outside in the elements. In addition to just merely being outside the coaches forced us to practice in nothing but our shoulder pads and pants (you read that right, no cleats). Even worse than that, they drenched each player with water from a hose before they headed out to the field so that they would be even colder. Seems like cruel and unusual punishment to me, but they are getting paid to put us in the best position to win.

I am pretty sure a couple of Tom Hanks' toes fell off when he was trying to make a cut. Stan Francisco went to throw a deep pass and his hand had frozen to the ball so his arm detached from his body and Bender Rodriguez ended up catching the ball and Stan's arm (belated Halloween spookiness too which is nice). I ended up faking a few frostbite injuries so I could go back to the practice facility and chill in a hot tub. I think with all of our limbs falling off the medical staff will have a tough task getting us ready for the next game, but at least we won't be affected by the damn cold! I've heard that our tackling dummies will be replaced with snowmen in the future too, but we will see if our roster is alive come next week.

In spite of the fact that the Luchadores play in Tijuana, Mexico for half of their games, the team loves it when the snowflakes start to fly.

On defense, we adjust by not feeling we need to guard against the pass so much. We do not go nickel very often and try to bring in our bigger linemen and linebackers to really stack the box. We might have 8-9 guys either on the line or crowding it on 80% of our defensive downs. We’ve got the guys to cover man-to-man and we like to dare the other team to put the pigskin in the air.

On offense, we don’t mind what the defense does. We love to run anyway and have by far the best running duo in the DSFL in Fuzzy Dotson and Jed Podolak. But those two would be the first to admit that they are as successful as we are because we have the best offensive line in the league. So, when the snow flies, the wind picks up, and the ball gets that much slicker to catch on the fly, we just hand it off to Dotson and then Podolak. Rinse and repeat and you have a guaranteed recipe for success in the dead of winter.

I want to preface this by saying that as a North Carolinian that now lives in Indiana, fuck the snow and cold. I'll take my humidity in the summer any day over how cold it gets here. For the New Orleans Second Line the players who thrive in the snow are the guys in the trenches. Bjorn Ironside, who is already having a great rookie season at defensive tackle, will only get better in cold weather. Bjorn is one of those guys who wear shorts all year round and seem to be oblivious to snow unlike us mere mortals. I'm over here wearing long sleeves and have a huge coat on trying to keep warm on the sideline, but Bjorn seems to gain energy from the cold and snow. I would be remiss to not mention Quentin Bode in the Second Line players who seem to turn it up a notch in the cold. What a tackling freak. When I tackle someone in the cold it hurts. When Bode hits someone in the cold they hurt. The man sweats in 20°F temperature like its 90°F outside, it doesn't make sense, but damn is he good. My scrawny ass might fall off in the cold, but I know Bode will make the tackle I missed trying to pick my frozen ass off the turf.

Autumn, or what we call it in Yellowknife, “Pre-Winter” is a great time of the year, there’s leafs falling down, (not Leaf Jr of course), pumpkins growing in gardens, and of course, Chilly conditions at the burial grounds. But since we call it an early winter, we have to deal with snowstorms during practices, with temperatures diving below zero, you are gonna need some hot hands in your pocket if you want to keep up in these conditions. One thing that makes autumn brutal here, is the slave lake across the town, floods naturally during this time of year, limiting locations you can go throughout the wilderness. You could try and swim in the river, but you’ll probably either freeze to death or even worse, drown or die from an angry whale. We do have some good stuff though here, for example in November, someone would make us a feast (most likely Videl or Leaf) and thrown in some stuff from their hometown, for example leaf would throw in lobster tails and shrimp, and Videl would add in a couple Japanese dishes, along with the traditional bear meat and salmon dishes. In Yellowknife we call that the “Heritage Feast” , completes every first Monday in November at sundown.

Oh man the cold, with my origins being in Finland, let me tell you about the cold. Some people might say they enjoy the cold or do not mind playing in the cold, but they are mostly those pansy little California boys who have never grown up with it and have damn near no idea what it really means. For me coming to Yellowknife was kind of like going back to my early days back home in Finland. The winter comes early and it comes hard at us, but thats all the same to us, because it helps us prepare better than any other team. Early on in the season we keep doing outdoor practices even when the temperatures get so low that many others would feel it wise to go indoors. Of course we take some practices indoors, but its is good to get used to the elements, because we will be playing in them. Another good drill or exercise that we switch to in the winter is snow running, which is a modification of basic uphill running, but this time on a hill covered in snow and man I can tell you, it really gets your thighs and legs going! I think as a whole our whole defense gets better in cold weather games! The quarterbacks never love it when the ball is cold and hard to throw, receivers don't like catching the balls and runners do not like holding them, but man do we defenders like driving at them hard and knocking the ball loose. So yeah, it is time for our defense to really shine!

Considering we play down in San Antonio and our division opponents are all in warm places, we've had to do some extra preparations for later on in the season if we have to play in some cold climates. I suggested to the team that maybe we could head up to my home state and use the field at UMass. I figured my coach would be welcoming of us and would let us practice in some colder conditions, so the date was made and off we went. A bonus for this was that I got to meet a lot of my younger teammates, apparently I'm a kind of local legend there nowadays, but it was a good practice. Lots of the guys weren't used to the cold and just stood on the sidelines in those big coats trying to stay warm, and it didn't help that a strong wind was blowing across the field. I'm somewhat used to the cold already despite spending several seasons down in San Antonio but I feel like it was a good practice for all of us. We need to be playing in some tougher conditions. We've had a fairly rough stretch of games this season and we really need to be playing at our best if we're gonna go all the way in the playoffs this year.
