*The Awards Committee Decides - Modern_Duke - 12-28-2019

There is a sense of nervous excitement among the five masked members of the hidden "Awards Committee". "Now is our time, my friends. Now is our time to make our voice heard. I won't delay any longer...it is time to announce...the Awards!", the leader exclaims to a strong round of applause from his four fellow committee members. "We begin with...the DSFL!"

The applause quickly dies, as the committee members glance at each other nervously.

"You all...did pay attention to the DSFL this season...right?"

Silence.

The leader rubs his temple, as if to ward off a coming headache. "We're the Awards Committee for heaven's sake! You mean to tell me you don't know a thing about the DSFL right now? Can anyone give me anything here?"

The member to his left sits up and quietly says, "Um, I think there is a duck team now?" The leader visibly struggles to keep his fury at bay. He takes a deep breath and through gritted teeth says, "Very well, we will keep the DSFL awards brief, you fu-". The leader catches himself and takes another deep breath. "Let's just begin already"

"Alright, how was that?", asks the committee member. "...Good enough. Now, for my sake I'm going to assume you all are prepared to discuss the NSFL awards?" asks the leader. There is nodding and a murmur of consent around the table. "Good. Let's get down to business then."

Kicker of the Year Nominees
Alfredo Crisco AUS
33/34 XP, 18/20 FG, 2 50+
Alex Dasistwirklichseinnachname OCO
37/39 XP, 28/29 FG, 1 50+
Kulture Fulture CHI
22/22 XP, 23/24 FG

Winner: Alex D

Pretty straightforward, Alex D had the most points scored, made the most field goals, and had the highest field goal percentage.

Punter of the Year Nominees
Alfredo Crisco AUS
47.8 Avg, 12 Inside 20, 71 Long
Neo Donaldson YKW
48.3 Avg, 15 Inside 20, 74 Long
Baxter Frost PHI
46.0 Avg, 18 Inside 20, 72 Long

Winner: Neo Donaldson

Frost had a strong average and lead in punts inside the 20, but also had more opportunities than anyone else. Donaldson gets the edge for the 2+ yard difference in average.

Defensive Lineman of the Year Nominees
Fabricio Baldari BAL
40 Tackles, 18 TFL, 2 Sacks
Grayson Kuusela AUS
54 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FF, 1 FR, 12 Sacks
D'Pez Poopsie BAL
46 Tackles, 1 FF, 10 Sacks

Winner: Grayson Kuusela

That's a terrifying combo of defensive linemen for the hawks, but the edge goes to the leader in sacks among linemen.

Linebacker of the Year Nominees
Lanzer Grievous OCO
93 Tackles, 1 TFL, 2 FF, 2 FR, 12 Sacks, 13 PD
Johnny Slothface NOLA

Raymond Vans ARI
109 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FF, 9 Sacks, 1 Int, 11 PD, 1 TD

Winner: Lanzer Grievous

Even though I consistently spell his name wrong, have to go with Grievous for contributing in all aspects: run defense, pass defense, and pass rush.

Defensive Back of the Year Nominees
Richard D'Attoria V PHI
108 Tackles, 3 TFL, 2 FF, 1 FR, 8 Sacks, 7 Int, 19 PD, 2 TD
Danny Grithead YKW
111 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FF, 15 Sacks, 2 Int, 16 PD, 1 Safety
Deon Taylor NOLA
58 Tackles, 5 Int, 27 PD

Winner: Richard D'Attoria V

Sneak preview of Defensive Player of the Year section: this ended up being harder to decide than I was expecting.

Offensive Lineman of the Year Nominees
Caleb Bright CHI
54 Pancakes, 2 Sacks Allowed
Givussafare Rubbe NOLA
49 Pancakes, 0 Sacks Allowed
Brave Ulysses CHI
54 Pancakes, 0 Sacks Allowed

Winner: Brave Ulysses

Fair rubs all around for these fine gentlemen. I would say it is hard to do better than zero sacks allowed.

Tight End of the Year Nominees
Johnny Blaze OCO
72 Receptions, 997 Yards, 13.8 Avg, 9 TD
Jammerson Irving ARI
89 Receptions, 875 Yards, 9.8 Avg, 5 TD
Cameron Olsen SJS
64 Receptions, 772 Yards, 12.1 Avg, 6 TD

Winner: Jammerson Irving

I would certainly understand the argument for Blaze: more yards, better average, more touchdowns. But you can't say he was the best at anything. Meanwhile, Irving lead the league in receptions by a nice margin.

Wide Receiver of the Year Nominees
Errol Maddox BAL
60 Receptions, 1146 Yards, 19.1 Avg, 13 TD
Sunnycursed YKW
75 Receptions, 1175 Yards, 15.7 Avg, 10 TD
Rod Tidwell AUS
63 Receptions, 1237 Yards, 19.6 Avg, 4 TD

Winner: Sunnycursed

Wide receiver may actually be the hardest position to award. After last season, there was an argument over which receivers deserved to make the pro bowl, and I felt like everyone was making valid points - even those arguments directly opposing other arguments. What is more important, receptions or yards? How much stock should be put into touchdowns? Does it matter who the other receivers on the team are? What about the QB making the passes? This obviously all applies to the tight end of the year discussion too.

Like I said this was tough, it could go to any number of guys. I went with Sunnycursed for being the only one in the top 5 for each of receptions, yards, and touchdowns.
But then again his average was pretty low...no, I'm not getting trapped in this cycle again.

Running Back of the Year Nominees
Ludiculo Bigby BAL
289 Carries, 1237 Yards, 4.3 Avg, 9 TD, 46 Receptions, 449 Yards, 9.8 Avg, 2 TD
Forrest Gump NOLA
269 Carries, 1204 Yards, 4.5 Avg, 8 TD, 30 Receptions, 217 Yards, 7.2 Avg, 1 TD
Ashley Owens COL
264 Carries, 1004 Yards, 3.8 Avg, 9 TD, 61 Receptions, 572 Yards, 9.4 Avg, 5 TD

Winner: Ludiculo Bigby

Huge breakout season for Bigby. Owens actually wasn't far behind in total yardage and had the edge in touchdowns, but was less efficient.

Quarterback of the Year Nominees
Franklin Armstrong OCO
252/429 3321 Yards, 58.7 Pct, 24 TD, 9 Int, 93.2 Rating, 601 Rushing Yards, 5.3 Avg, 3 TD
Corvo Havran BAL
285/468 3653 Yards, 60.9 Pct, 27 TD, 8 Int, 97.5 Rating
Wolfie McDummy COL
272/450 3218 Yards, 60.4 Pct, 24 TD, 10 Int, 90.8 Rating, 354 Rushing Yards, 5.4 Avg, 2 TD

Winner: Corvo Havran

Havran lead in most any efficiency metric you can name, QB Rating, Y/A, NY/A. This was looking like a cakewalk for Armstrong early in the season, but he cooled off after a very hot start (13-1 TD-Int ratio through Week 6, 11-8 the rest of the season). Also, while we're here, can we take a moment to appreciate McDummy keeping pace with Armstrong?

Defensive Rookie of the Year Nominees
Mack Arianlacher NOLA
30 Tackles, 12 TFL, 3 Sacks, 1 Safety
Gary Lazer-Eyes OCO
69 Tackles, 2 TFL, 1 FF, 3 Sacks, 2 Int, 9 PD
Stuart Little IV PHI
77 Tackles, 2 TFL, 1 Sack, 4 Int, 9 PD, 1 TD

Winner: Stuart Little IV

A late charge from Little (3 interceptions in the final 5 games) lets him snatch this one away from Lazer-Eyes.

Offensive Rookie of the Year Nominees
Mathias Hanyadi YKW
201 Carries, 797 Yards, 4.0 Avg, 10 TD, 53 Receptions, 408 Yards, 3 TD
Ruff Ruff ARI
260 Carries, 1109 Yards, 4.3 Avg, 8 TD, 45 Receptions, 315 Yards, 1 TD
Quindarius Tyerucker SJS
269 Carries, 1167 Yards, 4.3 Avg, 5 TD, 9 Receptions, 67 Yards, 1 TD

Winner: Ruff Ruff

He's a good boy, yes he is. This was a very impressive offensive rookie class. Shoutout to Orien Drake, Sean O'Leary, and Sweet James-Jones who had great seasons. This was looking like Tyerucker's award, but he simply couldn't come close to Ruff Ruff's receiving numbers.

Breakout Player of the Year Nominees
Ludiculo Bigby BAL
This Year: 289 Carries, 1237 Yards, 4.3 Avg, 9 TD, 46 Receptions, 449 Yards, 9.8 Avg, 2 TD
Last Year: 138 Carries, 585 Yards, 4.2 Avg, 6 TD, 46 Receptions, 336 Yards, 7.3 Avg, 3 TD
Mervin Leonard YKW
This Year: 61 Tackles, 4 Int, 21 PD
Last Year: 40 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 Int, 5 PD
Wolfie McDummy COL
This Year: 272/450 3218 Yards, 60.4 Pct, 24 TD, 10 Int, 90.8 Rating, 354 Rushing Yards, 5.4 Avg, 2 TD
Last Year: 249/461 2794 Yards, 54.0 Pct, 18 TD, 8 Int, 78.1 Rating, 101 Rushing Yards, 2.7 Avg, 1 TD

Winner: Ludiculo Bigby

I also considered Aksel Danielsson who had a similar increase in numbers as Bigby, except I saw Danielsson had another 1,000 yard season early in his career. So I considered him a comeback player more than a breakout player and left him off the nominees.

Performance of the Year Nominees
Richard D'Attoria V PHI
Week 1 - 9 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 4 PD, 3 Int, 1 TD
Andrew Reese ARI
Week 1 - 29/47 353 Yards, 6 TD, 0 Int, 124.4 Rating
Wolfie McDummy COL
Week 3 - 30/42 277 Yards, 4 TD, 0 Int, 120.8 Rating, 15 Carries, 118 Yards, 1 TD

Winner: Richard D'Attoria V - Week 1

That is just an absurd game. Some highly touted defensive back prospects only have 3 interceptions in their entire 2 year career (I don't want to talk about it), let alone 1 game. And sure, throw in the 2 sacks and touchdown as well.

Sort of a lifetime achievement award as he leaves office.

Defensive Player of the Year Nominees
S Richard D'Attoria V PHI
108 Tackles, 3 TFL, 2 FF, 1 FR, 8 Sacks, 7 Int, 19 PD, 2 TD

LB Raymond Vans ARI
109 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FF, 9 Sacks, 1 Int, 11 PD, 1 TD

Winner: Richard D'Attoria V

I though D'Attoria had defensive player of the year wrapped up, no contest, since basically week 1. Once I actually stopped to look at the year end numbers though, I was shocked to find it was actually far from a run away. At first glance I was actually going to give it to Grithead. So what happened here?

D'Attoria V:
Week 1-6: 6 Sacks, 1 FR, 5 Int, 10 PD, 2 TD
Week 7-13: 2 Sacks, 2 Int, 9 PD

Grithead:
Week 1-6: 3 Sacks, 1 Int, 8 PD
Week 7-13: 12 Sacks, 1 Int, 8 PD

Well that will do it, an unusually quiet first half for Grithead kept him off the radar, before an explosion of sacks in the second half. Meanwhile, D'Attoria V went from wreaking absolute havoc in the first half to being simply a really good player in the second half.
So like i said, I was leaning towards Grithead, but then decided the difference in interceptions carries slightly more weight than the difference in sacks, and D'Attoria V has the two touchdowns in his favor.

What else can I say about Bigby's season? The leading rusher in the league, strong contribution in the passing game, the key to one of the strongest offenses in the league.

Winner: Franklin Armstrong

The best player on probably the best team. This award has had Armstrong's name on it all season, despite some late season struggles for both Armstrong and Orange County. He does it all for the Otters, as one of the best passers in the league and a great weapon in the running game.

Massive snub for Medonca in the runningback section, 2nd most rushing yards and joint most rushing touchdowns not go enough for you? Sad

Wait are these the real awards? If so I should be OROTY since I’m actually a rookie. Williams played on a team last year. He’s basically Ben Simmons but he actually participated in games.

No, only real if you want them to be.

That’s an interesting point that I didn’t consider. Not sure if there is an official ruling on that. To counter your point though, baseball doesn’t consider late season call ups. Aaron judge had like 100 plate appearances the year before he won rookie of the year.

Only one I think I'd fight you on is TEotY, and I maybe only notice it because Otters. But Blaze had more yards and touchdowns on 14 fewer receptions. Efficiency should count for something there, and Blaze has a strong advantage in that.

Yeah, I don't understand the Irving pick at all. I also struggle with Sunnycursed over Maddox. Maddox has the better efficiency and 3 more TDs. Sunnycursed has 30 more yards.
