Comparing the Cities of the NSFL - bovovovo - 07-08-2017

With the official announcement of the two new NSFL expansion teams being located in Philadelphia and Las Vegas, I thought it would be interesting to break down the cities that make up the NSFL. Whether it’s reflected by the team’s name (Philadelphia Liberty) or a pleasing acronym (OCO), each team’s identity has been built to incorporate its home city, at least in part. Even though the NSFL is still a relatively small league with just 8 teams, these teams to not lack for self-identity and culture. In this article, we will looking into some fun facts for each NSFL city and comparing them on basic quality-of-life metrics.

PHI Philadelphia Fun Facts!
~The Liberty are named after the famed Liberty Bell, which has this saying inscribed on it: “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof,” a reference to a scripture from Leviticus in the Bible.
~The Liberty Bell weighs 2,080 Ibs, more than the average professional American Football offensive line, which on average collectively weighs about 1,577 Ibs
~Despite bearing the nickname “City of Brotherly Love,” Philadelphia has the highest rate of violent crime in America for cities with a population over 1 million.

COL Colorado Fun Facts!
When asked which city the Colorado Yeti call home, Yeti GM Noble clarified “Denver”
~Denver is home to the Yak & Yeti restaurant and brewery chain. Could this be the origin behind the Yeti team name? Probably not.
~Nicknamed the “Mile-High City,” Denver is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level
~Denver International Airport is the home of several conspiracy theories that concern its runways that kinda look like a swastika, murals that may or may not refer to military oppression and genocide, and this satanic blue horse statue that fell on its own creator and killed him

BAL Baltimore Fun Facts!
~The Baltimore Hawks share their name with the Baltimore Hawks, a minor league basketball team
~Baltimore the home of Mr. Trash Wheel, a water-wheel boat that removes trash from the Inner Harbor
~Baltimore is a city with a lot of US firsts… the first post office system, the first umbrella factory, the first railroad station, the first dental school in the world, the first telegraph line in the world, the first city with the 311 non-emergency hotline, the first successful manned balloon launch, built the first Catholic cathedral, and had the first professional sports organization in the US

YKW Yellowknife Fun Facts!
~Yellowknife is the only city in the Northwest Territories, Canada, and is home to almost half of the entire population of the Northwest Territories
~Yellowknife is known as the diamond capital of North America, home to three currently operating diamond mines and contributes to Canada being ranked 3rd in the world in diamond production by value
~Only 5km (or 3.1 miles) from Yellowknife is the Giant Mine Town Site, a deserted goldmine town that was abandoned after a mining explosion killed nine workers in 1992 in the middle of a labor strike between the workers and management. It was later found that the explosion was the result of a planted bomb. The town has since been believed to be haunted and is held in high regard by ghost hunters.

LVL Las Vegas Fun Facts!
~Las Vegas legalized gambling and drastically reduced divorce and marriage requirements in 1931 to attract construction workers who were building the Hoover Dam. The huge influx of workers and their families that followed helped Las Vegas avoid any kind of significant economic hardship during the Great Depression. This was also the birth of Las Vegas’ reputation as a “Sin City”
~The Las Vegas Strip is supposedly the brightest place on Earth at night when looked at from outer space
~The Las Vegas Legion might be named after the fictional Caesar’s Legion from the video game Fallout: New Vegas. Or perhaps after the Las Vegas based American Legion, the nation’s largest veteran association. Or maybe after the American Legion Baseball League, a Nevada youth baseball league.

OCO Orange County Fun Facts!
~Orange County has a higher population that 21 US states
~Otters are endangered in North America and have been driven from the Orange County area because of overhunting and urbanization. When an otter was seen off the coast of Orange County in 2011, it was the first time anyone had seen an otter in Orange County in over 30 years.
~(I know we typically want to avoid anything remotely political, but I found this interesting) Despite being located in the historically Democrat-dominated state of California and being a very urbanized county, Orange County has historically voted overwhelmingly Republican. Only six Democrats have ever won Orange County in statewide votes over the past 50 years, and in 2016 Hillary Clinton became the first Democratic presidential nominee to ever win Orange County since Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936.

ARI Arizona Fun Facts!
When asked if the Outlaws were based out of Phoenix, an inside source eloquently stated “Yes.”
~The Outlaws are likely a throwback to the Wild West time period, and Phoenix was actually founded by Confederate veterans in 1867. This history of the romanticized Cowboy Outlaw continues today, as large swathes of federal lands in Arizona have group travel warnings in place because of significant human trafficking and cartel threats
~Phoenix is located in the sunniest region on Earth, and average temperatures in summer are the hottest of any major city in the US. There are on average 107 days a year with a high of at least 100 F (38 C) in Phoenix.
~The first elected sheriff of Phoenix was Tom Barnum in 1871. He won because he ran unopposed after the two other candidates, John and Jim, fought in a duel. John killed Jim and was forced to withdraw from the election.

SJS San Jose Fun Facts!
~San Jose is one of the wealthiest major cities in the entire world. The only cities that have a higher per capita GDP are Zurich, Switzerland and Oslo, Norway.
~There is a very good chance that San Jose is California’s oldest settlement, founded in 1777 as a farming community
~The San Jose SaberCats are likely named after the San Jose SaberCats, a professional Arena Football League team that folded in 2015. They made the playoffs 16 times out of their 20 years of existence, winning the championship 4 times.

As we can see, each team and their respective cities have a wealth of history that makes each one unique. Now let’s see how the cities compare statistically…

Some of the statistics may be a little off because the sources weren't all the same (Couldn't get data on Orange County from the same sources that I could get city data, for example)

This first graph compares each cities populations, with the red line being the average. As you can see, Yellowknife is by far the smallest, while Philadelphia has the highest population. Even if we extrapolate Yellowknife to the entire Northwest Territories of Canada, the population would still only be about 40,000. Keep in mind this includes the entire metropolitan area of these cities, instead of just the consolidated city-county. I figured that would be a more accurate indicator of the potential direct fan base for each team.

This graph shows the size of each cities media market, which is basically the number of households in the region that the city is in. Orange County has by far the largest, being a member of the San Francisco media market. The Yellowknife media market is an estimation taken by the number of households in all of the Northwest Territories, because apparently the Northwest Territories don’t have a defined media market?

Here is where things get interesting…this is the average household income by city. The high household income for Yellowknife could be explained by the fact that a high number of households in Yellowknife have more than one “earner,” but outside of that I’m not really sure why theirs is so high (this is after conversion to USD).

This is the violent crime rate per 100,000 people per city. You can see that Yellowknife has a rate over twice as much as the next most violent city, Baltimore. This could likely be due to how small Yellowknife’s population is. One violent crime increases Yellowknife’s rate much more than one violent crime increases Philadelphia’s rate. The smaller population in Yellowknife also results in a higher percentage of crimes being reported. Many bar fights happen in New York that never actually get reported to Police, because they happen all the time and they have better things to do. In Yellowknife, your bar fight has a much higher chance of being reported to the police because it’s a smaller city with less overall crime. Observant readers may notice Baltimore’s violent crime rate being higher than Philadelphia’s, even after I said Philadelphia had the highest violent crime rate out of all cities with more than 1 million people. Don’t worry, Baltimore’s independent city population is only about 620,000, while Philadelphia’s is about 1.5 million.

What can we learn from these analysis? Not much, probably. It's just fun to compare. Yellowknife is very small but has high income levels for buying NSFL merch and tickets. Orange County has by far the largest media market for airing NSFL games. And each team’s identities, in one way or another, is directly tied to their home city.

Hope you enjoyed reading!

Yellowknife earnings aren't comparable to earnings in the other cities. Living in the Northwest Territories, or anywhere in Northern Canada for that matter, means paying huge prices for anything.

The price of purchasing nearly everything is tripled from that which most people pay in other areas of North America. While the prices aren't as steep as some towns in places like Nunavut and Northern Ontario, Yellowknife is pricey as fuck to live in. Thus the reason for such high income. When one considers the price to live in such a place the incoming earnings compare fairly reasonably to the rest of the cities you mentioned.

Not far away you'll see communities like Tulita, NWT paying prices much like this:

Thanks for the insight! That makes a lot of sense. I knew Canada in general has a much higher average income per person than the US does because of price of living / taxes / whatever, but I was surprised to see Yellowknife so high. Your explanation helps a lot
