So Alfredo Crisco took home the award for S20 NSFL Punter of the Year, beating out Herbert Prohaska and ForThe Brand. There’s nothing wrong with Crisco winning this award - he led the league in punt yard average and recorded the longest punt of the season. But he only won this award by one point, so it isn’t exactly as though he was a slam dunk case. And for some reason, the best punter in the league (second best at worst) wasn’t even nominated.

Let’s take a look at the numbers to see why Venus Powers absolutely deserved to be on the ballot last night.

First, how does Powers stack up to Mr. Brand? You’d think since the latter was nominated over the former, he’d have some sort of advantage...

Powers: 92 punts, 4401 yards, 47.8 punt avg, 16 inside the 20, 71 yard long
Brand: 80 punts, 3713 yards, 46.4 punt avg, 15 inside the 20, 70 yard long

Oh, well that’s not very flattering at all is it? Turns out Brand has both lower volume AND lower efficiency, outpaced in literally every single statistic the index provides.

How about Prohaska?

Powers: 92 punts, 4401 yards, 47.8 punt avg, 16 inside the 20, 71 yard long
Prohaska: 72 punts, 3255 yards, 45.2 punt avg, 16 inside the 20, 65 yard long

Doesn’t look much different here - aside from the tie in punts inside the 20, Powers obliterates Prohaska both volume wise and efficiency wise.

Now, let’s compare numbers to the winner of the night himself, Alfredo Crisco.

Powers: 92 punts, 4401 yards, 47.8 punt avg, 16 inside the 20, 71 yard long
Crisco: 83 punts, 4148 yards, 50 punt avg, 11 inside 20, 78 yard long

This is an actual competition, and this is what POTY should’ve boiled down to. You can argue that Crisco would still gain the award based on efficiency, but remember that Crisco won the award by only one point even stacked up against competition that was inferior in every measurable metric. If Powers replaced Brand or Prohaska in the competition, and only two voters bumped her up one slot in their rankings compared to the actual results, there would be an entirely different winner.

But I guess the only punters eligible for awards season are those on playoff teams.

Crisco had the 4th most efficient season in terms of punting in league history, so for me it's a slam dunk over you for PotY (no offense). Definitely think Powers should have received a nomination - as did many others. Awards committee going to have to work out some things in their nomination process.

Also, I have no idea why on earth voters did not like Crisco's punting season.

I've been told many a time that just because my team finished poorly in standings I shouldn't be eligible for an award... despite us being the #2 offense in our conference...

Obviously they're just jealous
