*S21 DSFL Draft recap - TPE edition - sakrosankt - 03-08-2020

I present another recap to the S21 DSFL draft. In this post I want to check how the draft went in case of TPE for each team. Therefore I checked all picks and looked how much TPE they gained in their first update. I am sorry for any wrong data I post here in case there are some changes since I gathered the data.

First of all, let’s take a look at the draft and the players drafted and how much TPE they gained until the draft. In this huge draft class were 271 eligible players. All of them got drafted. The last number in each row are the TPE earned by a player (Sorry for bad layout, figured out it is too much to apply a proper line format for each of the 271 lines).

So far, so good. That’s what we already knew, as far as position and pick goes. What is interesting is the amount of TPE all players already gathered. The first pick all gathered a good amount of TPE already. The first player picked with under 100 TPE claimed is Sebastian Vettel at #17 selected by the Minnesota Grey Ducks. Looking through the list it becomes surprisingly to see that there are also two active quarterbacks near the end and one at the end of the draft. Jim Waters was drafted at position #180 by the Tijuana Luchadores with 140 TPE and Tom sofa fell all the way to the last pick at #271 to the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers. I don’t know what was the purpose of those drops, as there were also many lower quarterbacks picked with those two calibers still on the board.

The player with the highest amount of TPE is Phat Boi selected with pick #5 by the Kansas City Coyotes. This is most likely due to the expansion draft, which resulted in picking quarterbacks as a priority early on. The player with the second most TPE, Jeffrey Philips, fell all the way to #33, picked by the Dallas Birddogs. Tight End is not the highest priority position wise as it seems, but to let a player like Philips drop that far seems weird nevertheless. The Jack Brothers and White Goodman are next on the list, being the 3-5 ranked players TPE wise. Another surprisingly low pick is Koniecpolski at #22 for the Dallas Birddogs. It won’t be that hard to accept for the Birddogs though. They got 4 of the 6 players with the highest TPE. Those 6 players are the only one to already gather over 170 TPE. 57 players in the draft were able to get over 100 TPE.

But who had the best draft looking purely at TPE? To answer this, we first take a look at the average TPE every team drafted.
1. DAL - 43 players drafted, average TPE: 82
2. BBB - 36 players drafted, average TPE: 79.33
3. LON - 36 players drafted, average TPE: 77.31
4. KCC - 29 players drafted, average TPE: 77.21
5. POR - 32 players drafted, average TPE: 75.56
6. NOR 32 players drafted, average TPE: 75.28
7. MIN - 29 players drafted, average TPE: 72.07
8. TIJ - 34 players drafted, average TPE: 69.59

If we look at this list, the Dallas Birddogs totally nailed it. In average, they drafted over 2 TPE more than any other team. This is not surprising, as they already have 4 top earners as we have stated above. The Myrtle Beach Buccaneers are second on our list, they had a really good draft if we look at this numbers. Their first 9 picks were all players with mostly far over 100 TPE except just one, who also is at 89. And their addition with the last pick (Tom Sofa, 104) also makes an impact, as normally the later picks don’t have much more than the base 50 TPE.

The Royals and Coyotes had a quite similar draft as their numbers are almost the same. The Coyotes used their first few picks to get talents on both sides of the ball. They could get Phat Boi alongside with top WR Eddie Jeeta and still land on Chester Sweets, CB and Kevin Fakon, RB in back to back picks. They could also get Michael Witheblock at #53, which seems to builds up a top base looking at Wide Receivers.
The Royals also tried to get top talent on both sides of the ball early. Colby Jack was the obvious pick at #2, later they could also get with Derred de Ville (LB), Cadillac Harris (CB), Acura Skyline (RB) and Sandro Ryeu (DE) top prospects at their respective position. One steal of the draft could easily be Eldrick Avery (CB) at #57.

The Pythons and Seawolves follow at position 5 and 6 of the TPE-average ranking. The Pythons made it clear that they wanted to get top talent in the defensive backfield, as they selected 3 cornerbacks with their first 3 picks, followed by a safety. The selection of Daniel George (TE) and Tatsu Nakamura (RB) added some interesting prospects on the offensive side of the ball. Later on, they concentrated on adding O-Line prospects.
The Seawolves early on picked defensive prospects. In their picks in the top 100, they only selected 3 offensive talents (Kevin Koh, WR, Luke Skywalker, QB and Sam Sidekick) out of 11. Out of their picks, there was no player with over 150 TPE.
The Minnesota Grey Ducks had no good draft TPE wise. The reigning Ultimini champions are 10 points in average behind the leading Birddogs. The lowest draft spot may be one reason, another is the early selection of players with under 100 TPE. The Grey Ducks also tried to add defensive talent early on.

By far the worst draft TPE wise had the Tijuana Luchadores. The added just slightly under 70 TPE in average per player to their roster. A reason may be the lack of draft picks in the early rounds. In the first round they selected Ben Slothlisberger as their quarterback at #4, but their next pick was #28. Until then, many of the top prospects already have been picked. With their additional picks in the later rounds, they couldn’t make up for what they missed early on.

As I already pointed out, there were 57 players in the draft with over 100 TPE out of the 271 eligible. 88 players have either never claimed a TPE in their update thread or didn’t even create a page. 51 players created an update page and claimed less than 10 TPE, so they didn’t gather more than 60 TPE in total.
We consider players only active in this statistics, if one gathered over 60 TPE. This value is chosen due to the fact that some players create their update page when they start, often claim 7 TPE (AC and first free training) and don’t show up anymore.
Considering that data, we just take a look at the ones we consider active, so we take the average of the 132 active players drafted.
1. DAL - 21/43 active players drafted, average TPE: 113.24
2. POR -13/32 active players drafted, average TPE: 110.08
3. KCC - 13/29 active players drafted, average TPE: 106.62
4. BBB - 19/36 active players drafted, average TPE: 102.68
5. LON - 19/36 active players drafted, average TPE: 99.46
6. NOR 18/32 active players drafted, average TPE: 93.11
7. MIN - 14/29 active players drafted, average TPE: 91.93
8. TIJ - 15/34 active players drafted, average TPE: 91.00

Seeing this ranking and numbers, the good draft for the Birddogs seems even more impressive. They not just could draft the most active players, they also got the most out of those active players. Future seems to be good for this expansion team. By picking up 21 active players it seems that the Birddogs did one hell of a job at scouting the loads of rookies. We will see how many of them will stay active, as it just is an assumption that players with at least 60 TPE are active.

The Pythons jump up the board in the draft for active players only. With an average of 110 TPE per active player they seem to also have nailed the draft. That number may be that high, because they could only get 13 active players, which is the least amount of active players drafted by a team tied with the Coyotes. Speking of the Coyotes, they are next in the rankings with an average of 106 TPE per player. We will see if the low numbers of active players drafted may affect the season, but it won’t be that much of a problem for them, as they already have players on their roster from last season(s).

The Myrtle Beach Buccaneers fall to the 4th place in this ranking. But they could also pick up a bunch of active players (19). They still have about 102 TPE earned already and will try to get the Buccaneers back to the championship.

The Royals didn’t do as well in their expansion draft as the Birddogs did in theirs. They could also gather the talent of 19 active players, but they in average have just 99 TPE. We will see how this will pan out throughout the season. They have the same problem as the Dallas Birddogs, in not having already a roster from previous seasons. Therfore the – what it currently seems - worse draft as their opponents will be hard to compensate.

The Norfolk Seawolves (18 actives), Minnesota Grey Ducks (14 actives) and Tijuana Luchadores (15 actives) have about the same number of average TPE earned of their drafted prospects. They are in the range of low 90, what is unbelievable 20 points at average less than the top teams in this draft. They still have enough active players who will be enthusiastic about the season and try to improve as good as possible.

I am curious how the season will pan out after seeing that much difference in the draft. When I looked through the draft, I didn’t expect that much difference between the different teams.
