*Some thoughts about the DSFL - speculadora - 04-13-2020

The DSFL has a culture problem.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot with everything that’s come up, especially so with two Otters being so involved in all of it. I’m not writing this to deflect from anything that happened there. From the sounds of it, things were quite bad. I don’t condone that stuff, but I’m also not about to start dragging names through the mud. I’m doing this, instead, to address something that this whole situation made me acutely aware of: the DSFL has, for quite some time, been a breeding ground for that sort of activity.

Don’t get me wrong, the DSFL also has a lot going for it. Tons of players have had really great experiences. It helps keep them active. Part of the reason I think the DSFL has this issue is that everyone is so passionate about their teams. That’s a double-edged sword, however. That passion makes people highly competitive. You sort of forget why the DSFL even exists in the first place. In a lot of ways it seems like the DSFL acts like it’s a league of its own rather than a league that serves the sole purpose of helping new players and putting them in the best position to succeed in the NSFL.

In short, I kind of think the DSFL needs to be humbled. So let me say this. There is a reason we have never put a DSFL Champions banner up. There’s a reason I could name all 21 Ultimus winners, in order, and not even tell you who won the DSFL title in S20. Your success should be measured by how many active users your team has in the NSFL, and that alone, because that is your job as GMs in that league.

That does not have to be at odds with people loving their time in the DSFL, or loving their teams. The competitiveness that I have seen in the DSFL since I was a GM there all the way back in Season 7 is directly at odds with that, however.

I remember, during my time there, we actually had to pass a rule stating you had to start active players over inactive players. And we only went half way! We said something like at least 2 formations, if I can remember correctly. At a time when we had maybe 5-6 active users per team, we actually had to implement a rule forcing GMs to play them. Think about how insane that is.

I remember opposing GMs trying to do everything they could do game their opponents. I remember people not wanting to claim new players because they’d rather start a 75 TPE corpse than risk using the guy who might have 50 TPE for a week’s worth of sims. Shit, I wasn’t innocent of any of this myself.

I remember being forced to trade a draft pick to hire a co-GM because a team was more interested in their own success than that of their players. And has that changed? Don’t think so. Teams are still making people trade for their own players just to go GM. It shouldn’t matter. They should get a discount if you’re going to ask them to trade at all.

I remember, without naming my names, that when I retired with the intent of recreating, it happened in the middle of the DSFL draft, and two teams immediately reached out asking me to create once they were on the clock. I’m not going to name names because I’m not interested in anyone being punished. Probably past a hypothetical statute of limitations for that, anyway. But that’s exactly the f’ing problem I have with the DSFL. Are you so worried that another team might get my receiver for one or two seasons that you need to resort to that kind of stuff? The motivation, of course, is winning. Which is, once again, the whole problem.

I’ve seen this get particularly bad recently, and honestly now not even over winning. People are just bitter and mad at other teams because their GMs were bitter and mad at them, and their GM’s GM’s were that way, and on it goes. This stuff didn’t just start with current team GMs. It’s existed and been passed down for quite some time. Teams hire their own former players who hate other teams and those players teach their players to hate the other teams. It’s a whole ass mess. We’re talking about a developmental league for a sim league, y’all. It’s even less serious than not that serious.

To any existing GMs, I’m sorry if you feel like I’m targeting you because of what happened with Myrtle Beach. If you aren’t guilty of it I can promise you your predecessors or their predecessors were. I’ve been in this league for a long time. Every team has been guilty of it at one point or another. I only wanted to do this to bring the collective attention of the DSFL to this issue. Stop being dicks to each other, to non-GMs, to anyone. Play nice, continue to make people fall in love with this league, and recognize that your objective isn’t to win games.

Inevitably I’m sure some of you will comment in this thread and try to call out other people for this behavior and miss the entire fucking point. Please, I am begging you, don’t be that stupid.

Seriously such a great message, a positive locker room with a great atmosphere breeds activity, we need more positive messages like this in the league, thanks Spec <3
