HO Newsletter - Beginning of S22 - bex - 04-29-2020 Hello! Thank you so much to those of you that completed our league survey! We really appreciate the meaningful feedback we received, and I wanted to take a moment to respond to the general themes of feedback we've gotten! HO Transparency Obviously, this is the big one. I think that we've been making moved towards more transparency, but this is definitely a process of adapting to that mode of doing things. Three specific pieces of feedback in this area that I want to address are 1) vote transparency and 2) ruling explanations 3) proactive communication. As far as vote transparency, HO does two things. We note abstentions. Head Office members generally do not vote on matters where there is a conflict of interest. We also try to then give numbers for the vote. 5-0, 4-1, 3-2 etc. We do not, however, publish who voted in which direction. This is to avoid targeting and harassment towards those who voted in certain ways. In regards to the ruling explanation, the feedback we received asked for us to provide reasoning and more look into precedent. Our general practice is to link and relevant precedent cases we are leaning on and talk through whether or not we are upholding precedent or modifying our actions given new circumstances. We will venture to continue this and improve the depth of our reasonings provided where appropriate. We were also asked about sharing different opinions that came up in discourse prior to the final ruling. This is something that is interesting in theory, but harder to implement in practice. We want to make sure announcements and rulings are straightforward enough to avoid confusion. Finally, many members asked for more proactive communication from the Head Office. We'll be working to increase our responsiveness in moments of crisis to let you know we're on the case. If you are worried about whether or not we're aware of a situation, I would greatly encourage you to reach out as well. On the non-emergency side of things this newsletter is the first installment of biweekly updates I hope to write for the community. I will also continue to give updates on my podcast, and I'm sure you'll hear the occasional update on Adam's podcast now as well. While HO might feel scary and distant, I promise that is not our goal or intention. We're working to connect with the community and help provide a quality experience for all. We'll work to increase communication from our end, and we would ask that you try and reach out directly with concerns as well! We love hearing from you too! League Experience One thing that was brought up was GFX! We received requests for more graders, better grading time, and an adjustment to the pay structure! I'm pleased to announce that we have been working to address these things! We have hired more graders who are working through the grading backlog as we speak. We've also adjusted the pay scale, which you can find here! We also heard a lot in regards to having more things to do with your money. As I'm sure you've heard, we have. launched the beta for our league casino! More information about it can be found here! Hopefully, this gives you a chance to play around with those league dollars a bit more. Any feedback or ideas for how the casino can be improved should be brought to @AdamS Another common thing that is brought up is our off-season. For the average user, it can feel too long. I definitely understand how it can seem that way. Our off-season is currently as short as it possibly can be given all. that. needs to happen to get ready for a new season. While we can't shorten it, we are working to make it more engaging by providing additional events and activities to keep the community going! If you have ideas for community events for our upcoming S23 off-season, please reach out! We're happy to talk through them. We also were asked about increased access to stats/history. Our index is good for providing week to week numbers, but our wiki is our best source for that sort of thing, and the wiki team is working to maintain old pages as well as create new ones to track our history. If you notice something isn't up to date, or that there's something that should be added for the wiki, the team is open to feedbackhere. Updating This is getting its own section because I want the skimmers to be able to see this. We received a lot of questions about updating being difficult for new members. We definitely understand that complaint. There are two tools out there that I think are worth noting that make sense to have out there. Tool One:Automatic Updater This tool is what I use for my own updates. You throw the links in one side, allocate the points where you want them to go, and then copy/paste the output box and voila, you have an update! I personally also go back through and make a few edits, like highlighting the numbers that have been changed, but that's down to a preference in aesthetics. Tool Two: Update Step By Step This guide, created by @gucci walks you through how to create an update page. If the link no longer works, DM Bex or an RM for a copy. We also see issues with position switches, so I'd also like to take the opportunity to share the position switch tool here. Our updating team is also in the process of launching a template for updates to standardize the process. We'll keep you updated on that front! Another thing that is asked about frequently is how different attributes impact performance in the sim. The data we have current;y. can be found here. We are always looking to expand our sim knowledge, so if you have research to share on this topic, we encourage you to reach out! Rookie Onboarding We all know that getting started can be a real challenge. Learning how to navigate the forum, what can be done/claimed/applied where and when all sorts of details to get sorted. While our rookie mentor team and the rookie discord work to help people through some of this initial confusion, we are always looking for ways to improve the new player experience. We're working on some revisions to the rookie guide to streamline things further as well as looking into updating and expanding our video tutorials. The Forums As you know, jcink has been our forum home for years now. Love it or hate it, it is what we've got. Our team is researching future options to leave jcink. This is still a ways off, but I want to let you know that it's something that's very much on our radar. With that move, we hope to also implement the long-promised name change for the league. It's all in the pipeline, and we appreciate your patience with us as we work towards this goal. More information about site changes will be made available soon. I want to take the opportunity to thank you for responding to our survey. We want to be making strides in improving the league, and that starts with knowing what the community wants and needs. We'd love to continue to receive feedback, both through future surveys and direct messages. I only request that whatever is standardized show ALL attributes, not just the ones being increased HO Newsletter - Beginning of S22 - caltroit_red_flames - 04-29-2020 We really need to move away from using spreadsheets for creating new tools. Google sheets is a slow program, especially on mobile. There are enough devs are to get this stuff done as standalone web applications. HO Newsletter - Beginning of S22 - caltroit_red_flames - 04-29-2020 I'm also going to go over all of the changes we've made to graphics and future ideas in an update some time this week. |
