*Old Man Screams at Wall - Thiath - 05-03-2020

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the third and final instalment of “How to (maybe) save the NSFL.” This will be a less serious post than the previous two iterations. Though at some point between now and the end of the season I’ll be posting a new article reflecting on this brief venture of mine, and what I think could still be done to improve the league.

To kick things off however, I’m going to be a bit controversial. I think the tampering rules need some serious improvement. Though I should preface, my thoughts on this issue stem from placing 100 percent trust in the large number of “accidental” tampering incidents. For those unaware the league’s rulebook states the following.

Tampering is defined as a player or GM approaching a player under contract with another team or whose rights are owned by another team, with the purpose of persuading them to join your team, request a trade, or hold out on contract negotiations. This includes any private discussion involving leaving the team with whom the player is under contract with the purpose of joining the offender's team.

Doing draft scouting on a player in the upcoming draft who was claimed on waivers will not be considered tampering if the discussion is only about scouting for the draft.

Tampering accusations may only be reported by the player who had been tampered with or his current GM or Co-GM with the exception of a flagrant public occurrence, in which case accusations may be levied by the HO.

Now, given the league's relationship with tampering, or lack thereof. I fully expected much more than this. In my opinion, these rules feel unnecessarily vague, as such, that leaves them ripe for abuse. I’d like to draw the attention back to an incident towards the latter half of S21. In which the at the time Co-GM of the Otters allegedly tampered with a player out of NOLA with the intention of bringing them on to Orange County. I’m sure a majority of you are very familiar with the details of this incident, if you’re not you can find them here.

Now, again I’m operating solely on the basis that no one is intentionally tampering in this incident, or others like it. However I think this specific case is a perfect example of why the tampering rules should, at the very least, be revisited. I’m sure had this not been leaked in the first place, the incident itself, and the resulting chaos that followed never would have happened. Which then of course leads me to believe that this kind of thing may be happening much more frequently than some realize.

If that is the case, and these rules are being so blatantly disregarded behind the scenes, why is there such a strong stigma surrounding it? I should state that I have absolutely no prior knowledge of whether or not this is true. I’ve come to my own conclusions based off of what I’ve seen in my brief experience with the league so far.

That then leads me to my next point. At the end of the day, what I want out of this series of mine, is for one person with any actual power to see it and realize maybe there are steps that need to be taken for everyone to have a better experience. As I’ve highlighted in my previous renditions, as well as numerous other times in other places. I personally believe the NSFL has fallen into a culture that, whether directly or indirectly, has begun to promote a culture of blind hatred.

I am aware that as humans we all have our own bias. Though I also believe that for a community to properly grow, we have to do our best to set those aside. As a community I think it’s important we begin promoting new adventures and ideas. Of course I know some of you are now looking at me as a hypocrite, as I’ve just brought up a heavily criticized piece of league history. Believe me I’m well aware of how this looks on my character, but I believe it is incredibly important to remember the history of this league. I think above all else, it is important to remember everyone in this league is human. As such, I implore you to not pick at old wounds as the league often does. I am of the belief that what happened is purely a result of poor communication over ill intentions.

My issues with the league stemmed from what I originally believed to be a single, isolated incident. Though over time, I can only come to the conclusion that it is a systemic issue. While I’ve attempted to find it’s routes, I’ll admit I could’ve done things differently. Perhaps had I spent more time on my first two articles, I could’ve more properly laid out what I think is wrong. Everything I’ve talked about over the last week comes to a head with this. I’m sure there are other issues I’ll be getting to at the end of the season. For now I’d like to propose my “Community Enrichment Program.” I’ve alluded to this for a while, but I must admit it’s still in it’s barebone phases. As the only feedback I’ve gotten for it is from myself.

So what is it? In a sense, the enrichment program is a reminder that this is supposed to be about fun. This new program would bring all the smaller parts of our league together, from graders, bankers, the twitter aficionados. Every moving part that often goes unnoticed or unappreciated. As an example, if you haven’t already, take a look at what’s become of the casino in such a short time. The work that iStegosaurz, AdamS and many others is nothing short of incredible. It has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the entire league. I think it’s an excellent example of just how important it is to maintain a strong community.

As well as that, events like Jackbox and RainDelay’s recent speed survivor have all but cemented my belief that this is the kind of thing we should be promoting. As I mentioned in chapter one I want to remake the “Community” thread on the forums. I now have a more concrete idea of what I think should be in there. For starters, Fantasy Football, Casino, Discussion, Off Topic, Events, and the brand new Free Agency thread.

Free agency is something I know at least a few users I’ve talked to want to see expanded to some extent. I know there are still some workarounds for this idea I’m not seeing, but let me lay it out for you. As it currently stands, free agency is nearly invisible to anyone on the surface level. Of course I’m not fully aware of all the goings on behind the curtains with free agency. Though I feel having it expanded and more easily acceptable will be a great way to have something to talk about other than the draft every offseason.

I also think my proposed enrichment team should be the ones responsible for the “Pillars of Community” award. Which by the way, is something I will build a hill and die on to get implemented. If the only thing I ever do in this league is getting this award realized, I’d genuinely be happier than getting my own franchise. Speaking of new franchises, I think the league is ripe for another expansion sooner than some think. Yes, expansion is a massive undertaking. No this isn’t another vain attempt to get my Brooklyn Knights. Though I do think something that may hold some people back from this league is the ever growing lack of roster spots. I also think players who’ve gone inactive for a certain period of time should be automatically sent down to the DSFL but I’ve had enough controversy in this write up already.

I know I’ve said a lot this last week, and I’ve likely made at least some of you upset. My only hope at this point is that what I’ve been trying to say all along has come through. I believe in this league with everything that I am as a person. Of course that belief also comes with the side effect of wanting to see things be better. Not wanting to feed into the negativity and grow on something good. I know from these last three articles I may seem hateful. Trust me that wasn’t my intention. Moving forward, I’m hoping that I’ve at least opened a discussion somewhere. Thank you, dear reader, for joining me on this unorganized mess of mine. I hope you're doing well.

Who could forget the infamous OCO-Nola Tampering cases. I wonder if we will ever see the NSFL look the same after an event like the OCO-Nola tampering case that totally happened.

the IA's from NSFL being sent down again doesn't sound like a bad idea. There could be a second supplementary draft of them by the DSFL teams with picks and order based on callups. They would have to be adjusted down to the cap and actives would have to be played ahead of them but it would be kinda cool I think.

wow no mention of me starting up diplomacy games smh

seriously though i fully expect another expansion at some point in the next few weeks, whether we'll be expanding for next season or the season after, it just makes a lot of sense and we're gonna have another really strong draft class soon when we hit reddit again.

I believe you are right in that the best way for us to do better is to remember that everyone here is a person and not just a user name. Also that at the end of the day this is supposed to be an enjoyable experience for everyone.

I will happily throw my hat in on more communal events being beneficial. The more we connect and recognize each other as people deserving of respect the better. Plus a lot of the ones that I have seen have been fun which is a huge plus! On that note To12143 the Diplomacy game looks interesting and I wish you the best of luck with it.

Expansion is probably coming again sooner rather than later and I will wish you luck should you make another bid for it.

All that said I appreciate you speaking up to try to make this a better place without being antagonistic about it.
