Upon seeing this article you may ask yourself "why?" & one of the main reasons that sparked the idea for this article was when i was helping my GM's scout for the large season 21 class. The crucial moment spawnes when potential draftees mentioned that they didn't really know anything about San Jose or what we are about. Despite being an original franchise in the league it appears that the Sabercats remain to stay under the radar unless they are on magicsl runs or the butt of a joke.
So, i have decided to compile the stats of the entirely of the Sabercats existence and attempt to weave some key storylines thats have effected the path of the Sabercats.
The first step is to look at the team records throught out the years.

For much of the Sabercats existence they appear to be a middle of the pack team that can peak in certain years but then fall back to the norm, unlike the Otters of recent who have been on a historic run of continued success.
The Sabercats have made the playoffs (non-forced games) 7 times throughout 22 seasons, which certainly could be worse but have only ended up with 3 total playoff wins, 2 of which that came in their Ultimus run of Season 14 and the other in a subsequent Ultimus loss the next sesson.

The offense for the Sabercats has not exactly been an explosive force to be reckoned with but ultimately saw some of it's best numbers with Joilet Christ at the helm, who was the Franklin Armstrong before Franklin Armstrong.

The defense on the otherhand has struggled to contain other offenses wether it be from premium opportunities for opposing teams due to their stumbling offense or just being overpowered. The defense as of late has begun to turn in the right direction as it has been a focal point throughout the previous drafts with players such as Tyron Brackenridge, HeHateMe Picksix, Lawrence Bass, etc.

The first place to look statistically at the Sabercats is the quarterback position through the air because a team without a good quarterback is often doomed in every situation. (Sorry Franky)
The first few seasons of the Sabercats in the NSFL were marred by inconsistent quarterback play and continuous changes, which included three different quarterbacks in the first four seasons. The first serious contender that emerged for the Cats was Ethan Hunt who remained the starter for two seasons but management decided to pull the trigger on a trade for another quarterback in Chris Orosz in a larger package deal to the Wraiths.
This trade certainly emerged as a major success in hindsight as Chris Orosz became one of the most successful quarterbacks in the franchise and remained the starting quarterbacks from season 4 to 8.
What followed Orosz though was one of the quarterbacking options that was a bust in Brad Pennington who was selected with the 3rd overall pick in the Season 8 as the heir apparent to Orosz and started immediately. The Pennington experiment lasted a short 2 seasons as he just couldn't compete on the next level and was traded to the Wraiths in yet another quarterback swap for Mat Akselsen who was a stopgap for the Sabercats to draft Joilet Christ 4th overall in the season 10 draft.
I only got to experience the goat Joilet Christ for one season but i can tell you that he was definitely one of the best Sabercats to put on the jersey and his numbers easily demonstrate that as his is 1st in passing yards, passing touchdowns, passing attempts. One of the best parts of his game was his versatility both through the air and on the ground as he amassed 2,700 yards on the ground, which is 5th all-time for the Sabercats franchise. Joilet was the starting quarterback between seasons 11 to 17 and included some of the most successful seasons of the franchise and a MVP award as well.
This success as a franchise was short lived as the Sabercats went from an outstanding quarterback to yet another average one in Dan Wright, who was a converted tight end. Dan Wright started out shaky but continued to build upon his experience and became better every single season and including his last in S22, which at some point was in MVP consideration.
The team now shifts its focus onto Monty Jack who is becoming the starting quarterback early in his career and only time will tell just how he compares to the other Sabercats signal callers.

The next logical step is to look at the runningback position, which is often crucial to any offense's success.
Upon looking at this list it is pretty clear that San Jose has never really been able to stick to a true bellcow kind of back & often operate much more like a committee of backs that all have different skills to bring to the table.
The running attack started off with a bang and a 1000 yard season from Vic Bowers Jr, one of two players to do that in the first season, who then subsequently tested free agency and ended up on the Otters and forced the Sabercats to roll with Jack Durden after a trade with the Outlaws in the offseason. He quickly produced a 1000 yard season alongside his running mate Denzel Diaz who mostly spelled him in instances of fatigue. Jack Durden's impressive running took a hit in his second season as his yards per carry fell to 3.0 and he ended the season with only 800 yards.
This signalled yet another change at running back position at Jordan Yates stepped into the role and just as quickly was replaced by Darren Smallwood the very next season. The recently converted wide receiver brought some stability to the position as he remained the starter until season 8 and averaged over 10 touchdowns a season
A familiar face finally takes his chance to shine in the spotlight as Denzel was finally given a shot to star in the offense. After the 2 seasons starting ir was clear to see that Denzel Diaz was one of the best Sabercat runningbacks due to the longevity of his time on the team as he became the all-time attempts leader until he was tied later on.
The position was once again in turmoil as they went through another two running backs in two seasons and the later being Jerrod Canton, the best running back to suit up for the Cats. Jerrod Canton was the starter for four seasons and was a force to be reckoned with as he average over 1000 yards & 10 touchdowns with his time on the team as a runningback.
Chris Orosz, not the QB, then became the next runningback in the fold and wasn't too exciting on the field but provided Joilet Christ with the ability to do what he does best, which included leading the team in rushing during Season 16
The more recent past has seen more change at the position as the Sabercats have struggled to keep or find any active talent as Marcella Toriki, their 1st round pick walked after just the first season and resulted in Tyerucker taking over until last season.

The final place to look at on the offense includes the wide receivers and the tight ends of the Sabercats franchise.
Upon looking at the stats there are a select few that standout and that includes players such as Shane Weston, Mayran Jackson, Xavier Flash, and Cameron Olsen.
The Sabercats began with one of the stronger receiving corps as they started with Bailey Cook and Shane Weston in season 1. Although Bailey Cook left after the first season, Shane Weston stepped into the #1 spot and excelled in it for a significant time. Darren Smallwood also emerged as an option in the second season before switching to runningback.
Another trade brought one of the best receivers to the Sabercats as the Yeti traded Mayran Jackson in a package deal. These two formed a formidable 1 2 punch until season 9 when Mayran Jackson was traded to the SecondLine
Season 10 saw a changing of the guard at the receiver position as Shane Weston took a step back for incoming rookies Kazmir Oles and Xavier Flash, who would once again form another great 1 and 2 duo for the Sabercats. Another great tertiary option in Ty Justice joined the duo in Season 12, which would form the potent offense that was able to take them to the Ultimus 2 years in a row.
As this duo continued to age they brought in a young tightend in Cameron Olsen, that would become arguably the best in the franchise, to take some of the pressure off the star receivers. The duo of Oles and Flash lasted until Season 16 when Kazmir Oles left to Chicago. This departure forced both Olsen and Justice to step up in the offense to replaced the vacated targets and yards.
The Sabercats brought yet another duo into the fold in Action Jackson and Deondre Thomas-Fox in Season 19 that continued to grow alongside converted quarterback Dan Wright but ended after the Season 22 when Action Jackson opted for free agency in order to ring chase with the Wraiths.

The relative stability of the receiver position compared to the runningback position is interesting to see in action as one would think it should be the other way around due to the relative low amount of TPE required to succeed at the runningback position early on.

Finally we look to the defensive side of the ball, which has many of the all-time greats in the league let alone the Sabercats franchise and is arguably the better side of the ball.
Once again you can see a few standouts just simply looking at the stat sheet, which includes Kolby Deringer who stands 300 tackles above the rest, Dan Miller who stands 30 sacks above the closest, and John Canton who leads in both interceptions and pass defenses.
The defense in comparison to the offense was relatively stable throughout the seasons as many players played out significant portions of their careers in the green and gold.
The Sabercats began their time in the NSFL with some of the better names on this list including Dan Miller, Ja Brill, John Canton all beginning in Season 1 and became the foundation stones of the defense in their respective positions.
Season 3 say the addition of a recently converted quarterback to safety added into the defense in Torque Lewith and become one of the stalwarts over the middle of the field.
Season 4 finally brought in a consistent starter at the linebacker position in Vincent Sharpei, who excelled in securing high numbers of tackles every season. Meanwhile all of this happens, Dan Miller continues to be a wrecking ball on the defensive line turning in some of the best seasons in history in regards to sacks.
This construction of the roster remained largely intact until Season 7 that saw defensive standout Dan Miller join the Yeti & a significant trade of Vincent Sharpei to the Second Line that brought back Luke Washington, due to Sharpei becoming a Co-GM, and Washington simply could not put up the production Vincent once had.
The move from Dan Miller to Calkewlated Chambers III saw a significant drop in sacks but saw a stable amount of tackles and production.
Season 10 spelled the end of the old guard of Canton and Lewith who saw decreased playing time due to the other younger options forcing the hand of the manager. The one rookie that emerged was Kolbe Deringer who had been selected 4th overall and was drafted to fill the gaping hole left by the departure of Vincent Sharpei. Just glancing at the stats one can see that Kolbe Deringer remained the focal point of the defense until he retired after Season 20.
One of the most franchise changing trades, in my opinion, included the trade of Calkewlated Chambers III and Nate Piazza for Thad and Chad Pennington. Both of the Pennington's were significantly parts of the Ultimus runs and provided active members on the line and at linebacker.
The 14th season saw CK's GM player arrive on the scene at safety, who remained a crucial part of the season up until the end of the 22nd Season, which included a picksix off of Franklin Armstrong and propelled the Cats over the Otters.
Whilst this was all happening, a defensive tackle that rivaled some of the production that Dan Miller was able to have included Freezer Riposte who was able to turn in multiple 10+, sack seasons up until he had been taking in the expansion draft in his final season.
Season 17 saw another young breakout player in Tyron Brackenridge who originally started at safety and then moved to linebacker in order to fit both team needs and personal ones. After this selection the Sabercats have continued to focus on defense throughout the draft and to build the team through a strong defense that included selections such as Lawrence Bass, HeHateMe PickSix, Otis Allen, etc. Who all look to carry the team into the future.

The last spot to look at on the Sabercats includes the special teams because they are people too i guess.
Upon looking at the stats, it's pretty much just an argument Neo Donaldson and Iyah Blewitt over who is the best special teams player to play for the Sabercats.
The special teams for the Sabercats started with a little bit of uncertainty as Kentillan Laces was the primary punter and kicker in the first season. The 2nd season saw a change from Kentillan over to Adrienne Nugent who only played 6 games total in their time with the Sabercats.
Finally in season 3 the Sabercats found their guy in Iyah Blewitt who continued to start until the end of the 8th season and went down as hands down the best punter for the Sabercats all-time.
Kyle Corbett was next up and had a respectable 3 seasons at punter and kicker but often struggled with accuracy as their final kicking percentage hovers around 80 percent.
After Corbett came Neo Donaldson, who much like Iyah Blewitt, truly excelled at both positions but especially fieldgoal kicking as he missed just 6 out of 156 attempts. Donaldson remained the kicker until season 18, where he switched over to the Wraiths.
Kicky Bobby was next up in the line & admittedly struggle with consistency kicking the football but was surprisingly effective at punting the football inside the 20. So maybe if another kicker could have been paired with Bobby who knows what could've happened.
Just this past draft saw the Sabercats taking a chance on Matthew McDairmid to become the kicker for the foreseeable future, also did you guys know he's Scottish? Although it is a small sample size, he is perfect thus far in his career & boasts the 2nd longest punt by an individual player for the Sabercats at 75 yards (Someone check his leg)

Another area of personal interest that arose for me included the fantasy aspect of the league as i never know who to take. Upon converting their stats into fantasy relevant ones it is clear to see that Joilet Christ is far above the rest due to his ability to move on the ground. The rest of these names on the list honestly aren't too surprising but seeing placekickers ranked so high was a pleasant surprise.
