S23 NSFL Draft Review

As a recent draftee and the local big time winner, it only makes sense for me to do another draft review. Especially after last year some people got tilted with my “mean words.” I honestly don’t know much about the players I am writing about so if I say something that offends you I am sorry it is not personal. I just need money to afford training and equipment haha. Anyways, let us get into this NSFL draft review before people stop reading.

With the first overall pick the Colorado Yeti Select Greedy Sly, Safety

As a Dallas Birddog, I hate to see a London Royal going number one overall. I have actually seen this guy around because he is extremely active and I am not super active. He reminds me of Colt Mendoza in a way where you just know he is going to be active and put the work in that needs to be done. At 266 TPE, it is almost impossible to skip over this guy and not take him number one. Safety is a position that has a pretty big impact on the sim but isn’t a huge stat filler. This is a good pick by the Yeti that should be the start to continuing what is already a very potent secondary. Great pick by the Yeti that should pay dividends for seasons to come. Also crazy to see how the rich get richer at the champs get one of, if not the, most active players.

With the second overall pick the Baltimore Hawks select Tyler Montain, Defensive Tackle

I’m like 99% sure that this guy is a Dallas Birddog so this pick is already approved by me. In all seriousness, he is one of the highest earning players and fills a need for the Baltimore Hawks. I will say that defensive tackle is not the sexiest position and I have seen a lot of DT’s that looked like they would last a long time flame out, but this guy is active in our LR. He seems to be a good team player that any team would be lucky to have. For a team that is looking to add some talent, having this high TPE of a guy at a position of need that is also a good LR presence is just a no brainer pick. This should be a very good culture guy that stays around and could even end up switching positions if he decides to not like being low maintenance anymore. Big Grin

With the third overall pick the Honolulu Hahalua select Heinrich Kackpoo, Linebacker

First guy that I don’t really know who he is. I know that for Honolulu, they need to pick it up on the defensive end of the field so this pick just makes natural sense. Being an expansion team that was thrust into competition, the league got to see a lot of those teams’ weaknesses come to light immediately. One for the Hahalua was their linebacking core. This is a good pick of a guy that has been racking up TPE and will be able to slide into a starting linebacker spot very soon if not right now. I think this is a good pick by Honolulu to get a good player right out of the gate that looks like he could end up being a building block for years to come. Well done.

With the fourth overall pick the Arizona Outlaws select Jadakiss, Safety

Two safeties in the top four? That’s pretty crazy. I was an Outlaw for a long time and won 4 rings with them if I’m not mistaken, so this is something I am pretty passionate about. I think this is another example of an active player that the Outlaws just make a good choice to get. Hotdog is from the SHL if I am not mistaken and he is very active there. I think this is a pick where you get a well-established sim league guy with a good reputation to help get your team out of its rut. Sitting at 230 TPE, you see that he is a pretty good earner as well. Very good pick by the Outlaws to help lock down the back of their secondary when you slide him next to Quinn Hughes. His speed should allow him to immediately play in the big leagues. Good pick by Arizona here.

With the fifth overall pick the Philadelphia Liberty select Tycker Om, Defensive End

This is a guy that is literally one TPE behind the guy that got drafted right ahead of him. Another team that I played for and this one got to be involved in one of the biggest league controversies too, you have to love it. Pass rushing is definitely something you always want to be adding to and for the Liberty, they arguably got the best on in the draft in Om. Om had a pretty good season in the juniors the year before, and the Liberty can expect that to continue. This is another guy in Mysa that should be a good locker room guy and a pretty safe bet to keep getting better. Good pick by the Liberty and a guy that fans will want to see getting to the quarterback for the next 10 years.

With the sixth overall pick the San Jose Sabercats select Tychondrius Hood, Wide Receiver

First receiver of the draft gets taken here. You usually don’t see them go too high because it is a pretty well saturated position in the league and is usually deep in the draft classes. I had no idea who this guy was until the awards show where he had a cult like following which was pretty crazy. He is a pretty high earning player and had a really good season for the Minnesota Grey Ducks this past season in the juniors. I don’t know if I would have personally taken a wide receiver this high but I don’t know too much about Hood. And the fans appeared to have a lot of good things to say about him at the awards show. Hood should develop into a guy that earns a lot of TPE and becomes a very consistent route runner and speed guy for a team that is looking to boost its offense in every way possible. Good value here, despite the position that he plays.

With the seventh overall pick the Sarasota Sailfish select Son Goku, Defensive End

This is another guy that could have a claim to being the best pass rusher in the draft. Goku is a TPE earning machine and he is pretty well established in sim leagues. He is a very safe bet and already sitting at 262 TPE, he will definitely be a guy that can make an impact for the second expansion team who had a very good season this past year for their inaugural season. Goku did very well in the juniors racking up 9 sacks to go along with 16 tackles for loss. He was a key part to the Kansas City Coyotes defense. If he is able to maintain the development curve that he is currently on, he will be an absolute steal at this position just based on his work ethic and his in game production. This is a pick that the Sailfish nailed and the fanbase should be feeling very confident in the direction of this young team.

With the eighth overall pick the Sarasota Sailfish select Raphael D’Alcott, Safety

Another Birddog getting taken, hooray! D’Alcott has been a very good guy in the locker room as I have seen him talking in there a lot. I think that this is the third safety taken in the first eight picks which is pretty crazy, but this guy is talented. He is doing well TPE wise at 215 TPE and he also had 3 interceptions for us last year. For a young team in Sarasota, these back to back picks addressed two needs that they came into the off-season with. It gives them two young players that appear to be very solid and can be franchise cornerstones. Not much to say here other than it is a good pick of an active player that is well put together in the locker room. Another round of applause for the GMs over in Sarasota.

With the ninth overall pick the Honolulu Hahalua select Ray-Ray Jackson, Cornerback

I think that this might be my friend Jason from another sim league. If it is, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with this pick because he is a very good man and a friend from my Haxball days and currently on my SHL team. This would be incredible if its him. If it isn’t, my apologies Jason. Anyways, Jackson is a well put together cornerback with a good physical profile. He already has 228 TPE, so he is a pretty good value at this point in time. He had 6 pass deflections this past season and played for the Minnesota Grey Ducks, who weren’t horrible. He should pair well with Kackpoo who they took earlier. Good job by Honolulu to see their defense as their weakness and get another player to help them tighten it up. Two solid picks so far by the Hahalua GMs to make sure the weaknesses on their team are addressed.

With the tenth overall pick the Yellowknife Wraiths select L’Carpetron Dookmarriot, Safety

I am a Yellowknife Wraith so I am biased. I am also an Anaheim Outlaw so I am biased. I hate this pick because we selected the Detroit Falcons’ GM. Is there anything worse than that team? I would argue that the only honest answer is no. The player himself, though, is the best safety left on the board. For a team that is losing Grithead and got Hellzapoppin last draft, this is a wise move to sure it up and get two young studs in the back end of their secondary. The Wraiths don’t really have any glaring needs at the moment, so getting a guy who should be able to make an impact soon is smart. I think we have Chase Jensen starting the regress too, so this should be a big time pick for now and in the future. I have also actually heard that despite being an anarchist, Tig is a pretty good guy. So I can’t be too mad about the pick.

With the eleventh overall pick, the Orange County Otters select Bob Bob, Safety
This is an interesting pick. Another safety off the board to make eleven in the first round already. It is also a guy in Nicky who has a pretty good track record of activity but trails just a little in TPE in this draft class. This is a solid pick by Orange County who gets another established sim leaguer that should stay active. I have always had a rivalry with the Otters so it doesn’t make me feel good to say it. He had three interceptions last year in the juniors and I’m sure the Otters hope that continues into this season if he comes up to the big leagues. Solid pick as the board is starting to thin out. This should help an Otters team that has been well run for a very long team and appears to be aging just a tad.

With the twelfth overall pick, the Colorado Yeti select Dick Thruster, Offensive Lineman

This is not the sexiest name of highest TPE player left on the board, but man oh man, for a team that just won it all, this is a very solid pick. Having seen the impact that Laslo made this season on the Wraiths, the impact of a human offensive line cannot be understated. He is only at 192 TPE right now, but he will definitely be able to pull that up over time. He only gave up one sack in the minors and had 46 pancakes, which is an incredible ratio. This pick should help the Yeti take care of their QB in the pocket and create some massive running lanes for the backs. This is a very smart pick by the Yeti if the guy stays active. The only risk is that the offensive lineman tend to switch positions or go inactive because there just aren’t many stats to go around for it. Solid first pick in the last slot for the champs, though.

With the thirteenth overall pick, the Chicago Butchers select Hingle McCringleberry, Linebacker

This is a guy that is well established in sim leagues. With the first pick in the draft, the rebuilding Butchers get a guy that should be good for a very long time. He has 228 TPE and having been in the Birddogs locker room with him, I firmly believe that he will end up having a great career in this league. Good pick by the Butchers and this should be a guy that helps Benson Bayley transform the defense into an elite one. Well done.

With the fourteenth overall pick, the Philadelphia Liberty select Eugene Smoothie, Safety

I’ll say it, I am sick and tired of typing the word safety. But alas, here we are with another guy in the back of the secondary. Nhamlet is a user that I recognize as very active from the SHL, which already puts him in a good spot in my book. The Myrtle Beach Buccaneers used him in a weird capacity last year as they had him blitzing a lot. The guy ended up with 7 sacks and two interceptions, great stats for a safety. I think this is a good pick if he matches his intensity here with the one that he has from the SHL. Good pick by the Liberty to trade up and get their guy while he was still on the board.

With the fifteenth overall pick, the Arizona Outlaws select Julio Jones, Offensive Lineman

Let’s just say I was a little perplexed to see this name aligned with this position. Nonetheless, the Outlaws follow what the Yeti did and get an offensive lineman to join their team. Jones was a star in the DSFL as well, accumulating 62 pancakes while only allowing one sack. These are some great numbers for an offensive lineman. This addition should also help the Outlaws create a more formidable offense and it will be interesting to see which offensive lineman stays more active and has a bigger impact on their team’s offense. Good pick by the Outlaws to get a lineman that they think can transform their future.

With the sixteenth overall pick, the Austin Copperheads select Griffin Porter, Linebacker

This is arguably the best linebacker left on the board and the Copperheads get a guy that can fill a need for them. He isn’t necessarily at the front of the draft class in TPE, but he is a pretty proven veteran. He has 210 TPE already and has had players that have had solid careers, albeit not necessarily longevity. If I’m not mistaken, this is a guy that has a lot of championships in the league and a guy that I used to be teammates with. He is a nice guy and has already had a lot of production at the DSFL level. You would have to think that he only continues to build on that. I like this pick as he is a good person with a good track record. A nice pick by Austin to help bolster their defense for the upcoming season.

With the seventeenth overall pick, the Baltimore Hawks select CJ Riley, Safety

The Hawks traded down to this pick and look like they still ended up with their guy. Riley comes from a pretty solid user and had a decently productive season with the Portland Pythons. After taking Montain in the first round, you can see the Hawks’ emphasis on improving their defense, which was a pretty big issue for them last season. This was the best safety left on the board after there was a big run, so the Hawks have to be happy to be able to snag him here. It was a good trade by the Hawks to trade down and still be able to pull in a very solid player for their future cornerstone.

With the eighteenth overall pick, the San Jose Sabercats select Walter Chestnut III, Defensive End

If I am not mistaken, this is a GM pick that had to be made in the second round. For a GM pick, Chestnut is a tad bit behind in TPE, but ckroyal has made good players before and I don’t see a reason to expect that this one won’t be a solid player as well. It is odd to see the lag in TPE as usually these picks are massive steals, but I guess there’s no reason to assume that he won’t be able to come back for it and do something big. Hard to say if it’s a good pick since it had to be done.

With the nineteenth overall pick, the Arizona Outlaws select Joseph Petrongolo, Running back

I love this pick right off the bat. I had Joefish in the locker room in Dallas before the draft last season and he was extremely active. He was also a really nice guy that I wanted us to get, but we obviously didn’t end up with him (oh well). I think Arizona made a good pick here to get yet another prospect with north of 200 TPE and good stats already in the DSFL, showing his early build to already be at least somewhat effective. I have full confidence that Joe will be a very good running back for the Outlaws and continue to develop into a leader on an NSFL team for the forseeable future.

With the twentieth overall pick, the Baltimore Hawks Select Lesean Paris Crooks, Cornerback

The Hawks have yet another pick, making it three in the top twenty. For a team that is rebuilding, they have made their direction of rebuilding very clear. In the latter half of the second round they once again made a pick on the defensive side of the ball. This time they ended up drafting a cornerback from the London Royals. He had a very productive season with 120 tackles, but does that mean he gave up a lot of passes? With just a shade under 200 TPE, he is a good value at this spot and a pick that the Hawks can use to build towards the future. A very defensively geared draft here for the Hawks.

With the twenty first overall pick, the Honolulu Hahalua select Bane Ka’ana’ana, Cornerback
This guy used to be my GM and he gets picked here to the team that he now GMs. This is a pick that had to be made with a second round pick and it is a good one. Honolulu gets a first round talent in ADwyer. He already has 236 TPE and played for the Tijuana Luchadores. He had two sacks and forced two fumbles, some solid stats for a rookie CB. He will likely be called up to the NSFL very quickly and with good reason. This is a guy that you can expect to get better for a long period of time and simply has to be a good pick because it was forced. Well done.

With the twenty second overall pick, the Yellowknife Wraiths select Kai Sakura, Wide Receiver

My team makes a pick here! And it is at the same position as me! I didn’t really know who this guy was before we draft him, probably because he wasn’t really the most statistically productive wide receiver in the DSFL this past season. However, he has 239 TPE and the Wraiths traded two thirds to move up and get him on the team. He is clearly pretty progressed. With a wide receiver core of Bender Rodriguez, Nate Swift, and Hardigan, the receiving corps is starting to get older in regression. For a team that is pretty complete, this is a good pick to add to Mike Lee and Susan Cash for a formidable wide receiver group moving forward.

With the twenty third overall pick, the Orange County Otters select Carl Wheezer, Defensive Tackle

Yeah, this childhood star is still built like a freaking refrigerator. Sitting at a cool 203 TPE, LGMForever is off to a good start with this guy. Defensive tackle isn’t too popular of a position, but the Otters managed to get a guy that is a relatively experienced sim leagues so he should be a good option close to the end of the second round. I think this is a pick where a good team is preparing for the future and getting a guy that can be a stalwart in the middle for years to come. It is hard to doubt the Otters’ drafting ability based on their track record.

With the twenty fourth overall pick, the New Orleans Spectres select Adelie de Pengu, Linebacker

If I’m not mistaken, this is the first pick of the draft for New Orleans and they take their GM who they are legally required to take with their pick in this round. It is obviously a good pick as Isa is a very known commodity and is a very good user in the league. Even though he trails the class leaders in TPE by just a little, you know that he will catch up or at least do his best to do so and will be a formidable player in the league. Can’t complain about this pick at all.
