Fellow gridiron warriors,

Interested in besting your teammates on a different playing field? Do you like tactics and war games with absolutely no randomness? Do you like stretching the truth in creative ways and manipulating other people? Diplomacy may be for you!

Diplomacy is a game in which 7 players take on leading the 7 major countries in in Europe circa World War 1. The players write letters to each other to coordinate their efforts, and move they armies and fleets in the hopes of expanding and building more forces. Alliances are formed and broken with regularity. Skilled diplomats can talk their way out of sticky situations. It's a game of warfare and relationships...and how similar those two things can be.

Interested? Already a diplomat and invested in playing an NSFL game? Reply to the thread to learn more and coordinate. I'd love to host it on playdiplomacy.com our backstabbr. I'm a long time user on both.

Here's a basic introduction to Diplomacy. It describes in detail the moves that can happen during Spring and Fall. In winter, the winnings of the year are consolidated each power builds the units they can in their home centers.

If you want to jump into the deep end of Diplomacy strategy, I highly recommend this compilation of strategy articles.

Here's a great intro video by Matthew Colville:

When he says no randomness, he means it. Not a single dice roll, card flip, anything. Each round, every player writes down their moves in secret after a period of "talks." There are clear rules in how each type of potential conflict is resolved. Basically, if you put more resources into taking an area, you win. The trick is guessing your opponents' weight of effort. While being able to discuss joint operations, temporary alliances, etc, helps in this goal, deceit is very common.

This has only confused my young teenage brain more, but I'm sure I'll pick it up. I'm a fast learner anyways

I forgot to include a basic introduction to the rules of Diplomacy.

I'll sum up very briefly, but the rules are definitely worth reading.

During the Spring and Fall of every year, each power moves their armies and fleets around the board. Each move is revealed and resolved simultaneously. The only way to successfully move a piece to a new position is to overwhelm the position from all opposition. If a tied number of units enter a space, both units are repelled.

Each unit, in addition to moving, can also support another unit. Every unit has the power to support an action into an adjacent space. This is the primary way to force a unit into another space. Units from different powers can support each other. It's very common for nations to ally and support each other as they spread out over the continent.

Fleets can convoy armies from one side of a body of water to another. This opens up options for armies to move quickly across the map, but can be disrupted if the fleet is attacked or if the target landing location is occupied. You can convoy over multiple fleets if they are adjacent.

At the end of Fall, each power takes stock of any lands they own and builds new armies (or chooses to destroy surplus armies) for each supply center they control. They can only build units in their home or starting three centers (4 for Russia).

After all new units are deployed, the battle begins anew in the Spring!

I would say I respect the hell out of it, but am frustrated by it.
