Dear Media - SchwarzNarr - 07-10-2020

Dear Media,

Why has my article not been graded? And if there’s a reason, why haven’t I been informed or communicated to in some way shape or form.

I can maybe see an argument that it isn’t completely league related, but at the same time, it’s an article about the budding relationship between a DSFL rookie, a DSFL veteran and an NSFL veteran. You see the relationship and personalities of Bjorn, Adelie (with Isa’s permission and blessing on their portrayals), with Daria. You see their personality shine through into their Dungeons and Dragons characters, and even down to creating character sheets for them. Clearly, you’ve never played a role playing game if you don’t realize that people let their personalities leak into their character sheets, and I worked hard to create Dungeons and Dragons characters that would have been completely in line with the NSFL characters themselves.

There are other articles that seem to be less involved with league content than this. At least mine surrounded my league characters. Someone got paid to write an article about changing their real life oil, and only made passing mention of ‘my locker room found it funny, and then kind of helped.’ (which, on my own personal note, I absolutely love the camaraderie and helpfulness than be a locker room with real life struggles), but I am left wondering how that is more valid than actual development and insight into Daria Guava-Fresca as a DSFL and future NSFL player.

The fact that in real life Bjorn is this big Viking-esque man who speaks as though everyone who is moderately smaller than him, lesser than him, or anything is a puppy dog that needs to be protected and dubbed “little one,” is huge. The idea that Orc Bjorn is a brute who can barely string two words together because Real Bjorn is actually role playing as Adelie because Adelie is a penguin and doesn’t speak, says a lot about their relationship and dynamics. The fact that Bjorn, roleplaying for Adelie, is intelligent and eloquent, merely proves his respect and regard for the penguin. He isn’t just training him, he cares about him as deeply as anything else.

You see how Daria is attempting to fit in with this newfound family, and how, while slightly intimidated, she realizes that Bjorn would die for Norfolk and NOLA and that he would want to make sure they are protected. She’s willing to be sarcastic and a little bit snotty while they’re playing the game, but she’s still nervous and timid when it’s outside of that context - just in case she offends Bjorn. You get to see that Bjorn isn’t just some big brute (even if that’s how he sees himself, since he’s playing this brutish Orc), but instead, has so much more to offer the NSFL, even after retirement.

The fact that I am attempting to build into Adelie’s penguin love and history by attempting to weave a story that involves pebbles and their significance. But you wouldn’t even give it a chance, because apparently our NSFL characters spending too much time roleplaying is an issue, and you can’t even tell me that it won’t count.

Hell the FAQ Even says:

Quote:Q: I'm not that familiar with football and find it difficult to write based on stats. Will I still get money if I write something more personal about my player?

A: Yes. As long as it's somewhat league-related, your media will be accepted and graded. Writing about what your player does between games or his personality in the locker room for example would work.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought that Adelie, Bjorn, and Daria were all “somewhat league-related,” and the fact that they’re playing D&D “between games” makes it still “league-related”.

In case you were worried that that was the only Media article that was also moderately off topic, here are some others for you that have been graded and paid for as well:

A Vegas Trip

A Description of a BBQ

Banned From Buying Fireworks

A letter to an old girlfriend

Oil Filters

The FBI Listens In

An Interview Regarding Breweries

Lawyer’s Attempting to Prove Insanity

Softcore Porn

Teenage Job

What Memorial Day Means

These articles have been graded over the last year, and so clearly having off topic personal information and relationships hasn’t been a problem before, so why now? The biggest piece of this is, if it doesn’t count for media credit, why couldn’t anyone be big enough to say something to me? Did you seriously hope it would just sneak past the 5 days no comment window and hope that nobody would notice?

i was expecting some really NSFW stuff on the softcore porn smh

I will say that I was informed by a member of the grading team that it wasn't graded because it didn't have enough 'league content'. This is a baffling decision by the media team as over the year I've been here I've seen so many articles with minimal to no league content get graded. In fact the only time I've ever personally seen media not get graded was when it was directly assaulting or insulting other players.

What seems even more confusing to me as that this decision was made and the player involved was never once contacted. This is the kind of thing that should be addressed the moment the decision is made and not something that leaves the player hanging for days wondering why their article isn't getting graded. Especially when articles with similar or less league content is getting graded after it.

I feel like three things need to happen here.

1. This article should absolutely be graded just like all the other articles that are light in terms of league relevance.

2. The media team should work with HO to determine a new standard for what is and is not acceptable for media so that this doesn't happen again.

3. A media member should contact the author of a media if it is determined does not meet the new media standards.

I'm not 100% certain on what is going on here but it is a terrible look for media team to have graded all of the articles on or near that date except this one which has a considerable amount of work put into it and should even get bonus money with how creative it is.

Anything that is about your players adventures adds to the backstory of the character, and really fleshes them out in a league that is basically an RPG. How this is any less league related than the countless other articles that mention next to nothing about the league is beyond me.

I'll be 100% honest too. If I had been contacted when the apparent decision had been made that it was way too out of the realm for league media (which, on a personal matter I disagree with for the reasons above, but that's not my point here), I would have been at least receptive and understanding, and morphed future media to fit this new narrative.

I've had 0 communication, though, that my article isn't going to be graded from anyone on the media team. I'm finding out from other players who have heard from the media team that it won't be graded.

The lack of communication and transparency should be an issue for everyone in the league.

Have you reached out to the media team? That's probably the first step to take. You should definitely be paid for it as it does appear to be in line with the FAQ's wording.

Another thought; the GFX team has an appeal thread. Media team might be able to make use of one too instead of writers having to make a general post in the media section to plead their case.
