Duilio05 AMA - Duilio05 - 07-31-2020

What's up yall? I'm here to do a AMA. Those who don't know me, I joined the league in S15 thanks to a r/NFL post. I got heavily involved with the league beyond just being a player. My player Walt Green is still alive playing at Baltimore, he's got one ring with hopes of potential WoH and HoF accolades... we'll see, he's still got couple seasons left before death by regression. I was GM of San Antonio Marshals(now the MIN Ducks) for couple seasons before stepping up as GM of Baltimore. I ran the recruitment team for a few seasons, during which the league had like 3 of it 6 largest classes in its history at the time. I was also the driving force of making the league's twitter community what it is today.

However I'm not really here to talk about any of that, but rather my career with the US Forest Service (USFS) and National Park Service (NPS), which is actually the main reason i had to abruptly step down from my involvement with the league. For the past six years i have worked seasonally as a Biological Science Technician for the USFS and NPS. Being a seasonal worker allows me to move and explore new places often with little cost as most USFS and NPS locations provide government housing for seasonal employees. Unfortunatly this season my housing is a tad outside the nearest town and there is zero cell service and no internet at my housing this summer. With no reliable access to interwebs I decided it's just not feasible to be an active member at this time. I do have a work office that has internet, but i really don't want to be browsing a website named "nsfl" on a federal government server.... hope you understand.

That doesn't mean i don't check in with my old team or keep tabs on league happenings when I can. So when I heard about the charity event I instantly thought that was an awesome thing and reached out to Infinite about what i can give to help incentivise donations. So here I am to give an AMA about my career as a Biological Science Tech because this community has smashed the $750 milestone that Infinite valued this AMA at.

Additionally given what i just said about unreliable internet access, don't be surprised if it takes me a day or more to answer. Especially as I'm gonna be in the remote high Sierras attempting to catch a golden trout this weekend, but answer I will eventually. I will make sure to quote and tag the user of each question I respond to.

To get this rolling here is some initial info about my 6 seasons.
2015 worked in Helena, Montana for Helena National Forest (NF) as Soil Tech
2016 worked in Granby, Colorado for Sulphur District of Arapaho NF as a Plant Tech
2017 worked in Scottsbluff, Nebraska for Scotts Bluff Natioal Monument as a Plant Tech
2018 & 2019 worked in Moose, Wyoming for Grand Teton National Park as a Plant Tech and a Range Tech
2020 currently working in Groveland, California for Groveland District of Stanislaus NF as a Plant Tech

Start asking away.

Did you get a degree in a related field? If so, in what field?

How much of your workday is spent outside?

Is a hotdog a Sandwich?

Was it a free archetype change to Plant Tech at the end of the 2015 season or did you have to pay?

How long is each season in the field and what do you do in between?

What are your favorite memes from being a weed man for the government?

I did get a degree. I have a Bachelors of Biology (General). I enjoyed my education. Took a lot of ecology courses such as Plant Community Ecology, Sensory Ecology, and Animal Behavior Ecology. Education is just good stuff can be a lot of fun and ended up with a minor in Philosophy as well.

Each job it has varied, but roughly 80-99% of my workday is spent outside, even when it's raining or sometimes even snowing.

I am confused as to how this is related to being a USFS Bio Tech

Haha yeah I've broken the rules making three archetype changes. Consider more of different job application.

Each season has varied between 4 to 6 months, usually about May to September. What I've done between each season has varied as well. I haven't spent a winter in the same location in back to back years during this time. Gone to Flordia, Ohio, stayed in Colorado, and in Idaho.

My favorite is that so far the district office in Granby made the biggest fuss to remind us that as federal employees that such things are illegal to use. Let's just say i assume half of all USFS employees use plant products regularly.

Follow up question. Hopefully this is worded correctly.

Are there a lot of areas for career growth in this field? Things such as middle or upper level management? And is this something that many in the field do long term?
