*Fantasy Draft Grades You Didn't Ask For - ReverendOReily - 08-22-2020 I joined a PPR NFL fantasy league compromised of twelve of the ISFL's most daring troublemakers. Over the course of the last week, we had our draft. The stakes in this league are incredibly high, as whoever places first in this league will receive a whopping $6 million in USDD (United States Dotfootball Dollars.) Here are my totally unbiased takeaways from that draft presented in one of America's favorite art forms, the wall of text. Hopefully this might help others in the ISFL who have PPR NFL fantasy drafts coming up, but if not, this is still a great opportunity to trash those that I am playing with. Many thanks to all the other members of this league - I had a lot of fun drafting with you guys and I'll have just as much fun taking your money. Let's begin! Team: CMC, Dynamite GM: Oles 1.1 - Christian McCaffrey, RB (CAR) 2.12 - George Kittle, TE (SF) 3.1 - Chris Godwin, WR (TB) 4.12 - A.J. Brown, WR (TEN) 5.1 - Devin Singletary, RB (BUF) 6.12 - Kyler Murray, QB (ARI) 7.1 - J.K. Dobbins, RB (BAL) 8.12 - Phillip Lindsay, RB (DEN) 9.1 - Diontae Johnson, WR (PIT) 10.12 - Mecole Hardman, WR (KC) 11.1 - Antonio Gibson, RB (WAS) 12.12 - Joe Burrow, QB (CIN) 13.1 - Greg Zuerlein, K (DAL) 14.12 - Derrius Guice, RB (OOF) Oles has a lot to be excited about from this draft, which I guess is kind of to be expected from the person with the first overall pick, but still! No surprise at all to see CMC off the board first. I think CMC, Dynamite has the potential to have the highest scoring (PPR) WR, RB, and TE all on the same team, but granted I'm also higher on Godwin than most. Getting A. J. Brown to end the fourth round is craaazy value, I think he's going to be better than multiple receivers that were taken before him. Kyler coming off the board as the #5 QB (behind Lamar, Mahomes, Russ, and Dak) is interesting to me - I think he's one of the highest risk/reward players in fantasy this year. Burrow is a great backup QB pickup considering how unpredictable the Bengals' offense is looking - another great high risk/reward pick, which are the best kind of picks. Great value on the Dobbins and Lindsay picks. I really have no idea what to expect from Hardman, it seems like he could become a favorite redzone target for Mahomes, or completely disappear for 16 weeks. I think our whack commish (<3 you Waldo) has us earning points for punt return/kick return yards, so Hardman could end up playing out well in that department too. Guice is not on the loose, he is very much behind bars. Grade: A Team: qWanako Frostfish GM: Joefish 1.2 - Saquon Barkley, RB (NYG) 2.11 - Travis Kelce, TE (KC) 3.2 - James Conner, RB (PIT) 4.11 - Calvin Ridley, WR (ATL) 5.2 - DK Metcalf, WR (SEA) 6.11 - Dak Prescott, QB (DAL) 7.2 - Michael Gallup, WR (DAL) 8.11 - Marlon Mack, RB (IND) 9.2 - Carson Wentz, QB (PHI) 10.11 - Pittsburgh Steelers, DEF 11.2 - Jalen Reagor, WR (PHI) 12.11 - Boston Scott, RB (PHI) 13.2 - Jake Elliott, K (PHI) 14.11 - John Brown, WR (BUF) I'm not crazy about the Saquon pick at #2 overall when Zeke/Thomas/Kamara are all there waiting to be picked, but I definitely get it. Saquon is a hell of a player, but that Giants' offense isn't going to be scoring anywhere near as often as the Saints or Cowboys this season. It was interesting to see Kelce go before Kittle, even though they were picked back to back. I don't think Kittle is better than Kelce, but I do think Kelce is surrounded by more talent and that could lead to less looks for him, especially in the red zone; Kittle is a giant fish in a relatively small pond, while Kelce is a giant fish in a Great Lake. Love the Metcalf/Ridley/Gallup picks, and I'm assuming Joe is gonna go for a QB-by-committee type approach rather than banking solely on Dak or Wentz. John Brown at 14.11 is maybe the single most valuable pick made in this draft. I think he's gonna do some damn nice things this season, and I'm admittedly a little miffed at myself for not picking him up. Grade: B+ Team: Kamara Sutra GM: QuirkyTurtle 1.3 - Alvin Kamara, RB (NO) 2.10 - Austin Ekeler, RB (LAC) 3.3 - Kenny Golladay, WR (DET) 4.10 - Robert Woods, WR (LAR) 5.3 - Terry McLaurin, WR (WAS) 6.10 - DeVante Parker, WR (MIA) 7.3 - Tyler Higbee, TE (LAR) 8.10 - Tyler Boyd, WR (CIN) 9.3 - Josh Allen, QB (BUF) 10.10 - Latavius Murray, RB (NO) 11.3 - Duke Johnson, RB (HOU) 12.10 - LeSean McCoy, RB (TB) 13.3 - Younghoe Koo, K (ATL) 14.10 - Tennessee Titans, DEF Gotta respect a guy who comes up with a team theme and sticks with it (disclaimer: Quirky might've named his team after the draft). I like Zeke over Kamara at #3 overall, but the two players are a lot closer to each other in PPR scoring than standard scoring, and with this being a PPR league Kamara definitely makes sense. Man is a pass catching machine when he's healthy. The Golladay pick is really exciting, I think his ceiling is going to be incredibly high this season, and I would've obviously loved to have him on my team. I do have a slight gripe with the pick, simply because Mike Evans was taken right after him, but I think it's entirely possible that Golladay has a better season than Evans this year. This goes back to that "big fish small pond" point I brought up earlier in regards to Kittle vs Kelce - Evans is undoubtedly the better receiver in my mind, but Golladay isn't competing for targets with Godwin/Gronk level receivers. Scary Terry is and will continue to be scary to opposing defenses. The Josh Allen pick was a little bit of a head scratcher in my mind, especially with Stafford still on the board, but it makes sense if you're expecting Allen to progress a lot this season, which many people seem to be doing. Love the LeSean McCoy pick, hope Old Man Shady goes off. I know a lot of my analysis with this one has been "I would've done this here instead" but don't get it twisted, Quirky had a hell of a draft. Grade: A- Team: Sad and Depressed GM: Siddhus 1.4 - Ezekiel Elliot, RB (DAL) 2.9 - Patrick Mahomes, QB (KC) 3.4 - Mike Evans, WR (TB) 4.9 - Jonathan Taylor, RB (IND) 5.4 - Keenan Allen, WR (LAC) 6.9 (nice) - James White, RB (NE) 7.4 - San Francisco 49ers, DEF 8.9 - Tevin Coleman, RB (SF) 9.4 - Hunter Henry, TE (LAC) 10.9 - Emmanuel Sanders, WR (NO) 11.4 - Zack Moss, RB (BUF) 12.9 - Robbie Gould, K (SF) 13.4 - New England Patriots, DEF 14.9 - Brandon Aiyuk, WR (SF) I wonder if Sid might be a 49ers fan. Looove the first three picks made here. I wasn't expecting to see a QB off the board until the third round, but Mahomes and Lamar are among the most contested players in fantasy football, so if you're committed to having them on your team, you obviously gotta draft them whenever you can. I don't know a damn thing about Jonathan Taylor, but looking at the RBs that were drafted soon after him, I have no problems with taking a rookie who is probably going to get a good chunk of the workload in Indianapolis. If Keenan himself is to be believed, he is the best wide receiver in the NFL right now, so picking him up in the fifth round is an absolute steal. Drafting the 49ers defense in the 7th round is one of the more questionable decisions made in this draft (for reference, the next defense was drafted at 10.11) but sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do. Aiyuk is a good pick solely on the grounds that his last name is the noise Goofy makes. Can't pass on a player like that. Grade: B Team: Elementary my dear Watson GM: Skyline 1.5 - Michael Thomas, WR (NO) 2.8 - Todd Gurley II, RB (ATL) 3.5 - Chris Carson, RB (SEA) 4.8 - Leonard Fournette, RB (JAX) 5.5 - Darren Waller, TE (OAK) 6.8 - Marquise Brown, WR (BAL) 7.5 - Deshaun Watson, QB (HOU) 8.8 - Harrison Butker, K (KC) 9.5 - CeeDee Lamb, WR (DAL) 10.8 - Henry Ruggs III, WR (LV) 11.5 - Kansas City Chiefs, DEF 12.8 - Baker Mayfield, QB (CLE) 13.5 - Adrian Peterson, RB (WAS) 14.8 - Jonnu Smith, TE (TEN) No surprise here that Michael Thomas, who has led the league in receptions the last two seasons, was the first wide receiver off the board in our PPR draft. By contrast, picking Gurley here was one of the biggest surprises in the draft. I would love to see Gurley succeed in Atlanta, but there are great concerns about his knees. I don't think Gurley is going to see the same volume of carries/targets that some of the RBs taken immediately after him will (Ekeler, Conner, Carson), but also none of those guys are anywhere near peak Todd Gurley. Hopefully he is able to make the most of the time he has on the field. I don't know a whole lot about Darren Waller outside of how well he performed last season; I know he's related to jazz legend Fats Waller, who has an objectively incredible name, and he apparently was drafted by and played for Baltimore for two years, but I'm a Ravens fan and have no recollection of ever hearing his name prior to 2019. Speaking of homerism, Hollywood Brown's a damn fine pick. Lamb and Ruggs are great reserve/flex picks; surely one of them's gonna do something, right? I was gonna make an "Adrian Peterson is the next Frank Gore" joke but turns out AP is only 2 years younger than Frank. Grade: B Team: Team flyeaglesfly29 GM: flyeaglesfly29 1.6 - Josh Jacobs, RB (LV) 2.7 - Kenyan Drake, RB (ARI) 3.6 - Adam Thielen, WR (MIN) 4.7 - Zach Ertz, TE (PHI) 5.6 - T.Y. Hilton, WR (IND) 6.7 - Russell Wilson, QB (SEA) 7.6 - Julian Edelman, WR (PHI) 8.7 - Alexander Mattison, WR (MIN) 9.6 - Will Fuller V, WR (HOU) 10.7 - Sterling Shepard, WR (NYG) 11.6 - Kerryon Johnson, RB (DET) 12.7 - Los Angeles Chargers, DEF 13.6 - Justin Jackson, RB (LAC) 14.7 - Brandon McManus, K (DEN) Jacobs is a solid pick if he can continue rushing with the same efficiency as last year (4.8 y/a ain't no joke) and Drake's great hands are sure to be an asset both on the newly revamped Cardinals offense and on this creatively named fantasy team. I think Thielen's gonna have his best year to date this year. Ertz is and will continue to be a top TE. Hopefully Hilton can bounce back from the nasty year he had last year, because he's been a fairly solid receiver in fantasy for years. Edelman's performance is gonna depend a lot on Cam's health. Not crazy about the Mattison pick in the 8th, as I think there were better running backs taken after him, but he's young and could very well ball tf out in his sophomore season. I can't read McManus' last name without smiling and I don't know if that's on him or me. Grade: B- Team: roger goodell GM: Waldo 1.7 - Dalvin Cook, RB (MIN) 2.6 - Aaron Jones, RB (GB) 3.7 - Amari Cooper, WR (DAL) 4.6 - Cooper Kupp, WR (LAR) 5.7 - David Montgomery, RB (CHI) 6.6 - Cam Akers, RB (LAR) 7.7 - Drew Brees, QB (NO) 7.10 - Evan Engram, TE (NYG) (pick traded from SwagSloth) 9.7 - Deebo Samuel, WR (SF) 11.7 - Chicago Bears, DEF 12.3 - Zane Gonzalez, K (ARI) (pick traded from SwagSloth) 12.6 - Sammy Watkins, WR (KC) 13.7 - Anthony Miller, WR (CHI) 14.6 - Nate Wozniak, Offensive Line (RET) Dalvin Cook is a great back when healthy, but his health is a consistent concern. Hope he can play 16 games (hope any player can play 16 games lmao) this year. I had these same injury concerns about Aaron Jones, but he ended up playing 16 games last season and scoring a whopping 19 times. Dude's a scoring machine on the field and in fantasy. Cooper and Cooper are solid picks, and I think Montgomery is gonna have a great year. Waldo really likes NFC North running backs. Unless they play for Detroit. Trading up to grab Engram is a smart move, as it seems like a lot of analysts have him pegged for a big breakout year. Deebo's foot is broken (good thing we have IR slots!) It really baffles me how Waldo managed to draft Nate Wozniak, a retired offensive lineman, in a PPR draft. He must've used the secret commissioner cheat codes. Grade: A- Team: Bortles Chortles GM: Glims 1.8 - Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB (KC) 2.5 - Lamar Jackson, MVP (BAL) 3.8 - Courtland Sutton, WR (DEN) 4.5 - Tyler Lockett, WR (SEA) 5.8 - Rob Gronkowski, TE (TB) 6.5 - D'Andre Swift, RB (DET) 7.8 - Tarik Cohen, RB (CHI) 8.5 - Justin Tucker, K (BAL) 9.8 - Jamison Crowder, WR (NYJ) 10.5 - Buffalo Bills, DEF 11.8 - Minnesota Vikings, DEF 12.5 - Justin Jefferson, WR (MIN) 13.8 - Ryan Tannehill, QB (TEN) 14.5 - T.J. Hockenson, TE (DET) Without a doubt, Glims had the most "out there"/unconventional draft out of the 12 of us, and I'm all about it. With his first pick, Glims took a guy who is yet to play a down in the NFL. For reference, the next highest rookie selected was Jonathan Taylor at 4.9. However, I've said it before and I'll say it again: sometimes you gotta get your guy. CEH has a whole lot of hype surrounding him as a rookie running back joining the NFL's top offense, and only time will tell if he was worthy of the first round pick. Gronk pick is hype af. I'm glad Glims picked him at 5.8, because I would've almost definitely picked Gronk instead of Ingram at 5.9 and I think I would've come to regret it. Cohen (whose nicknames on PFR are listed as "The Human Joystick" and, maybe my favorite NFL nickname of all time, "Chicken Salad") is a great pickup in a PPR league, and I think getting him in the 7th is pretty good value. How come people draft two defenses? I don't know what to make of this team, but I know I love this team. Grade: C+ Team Name: A Team: God Bless Lamar's Knees GM: it's me! 1.9 - Derrick Henry, RB (TEN) 2.4 - Nick Chubb, RB (CLE) 3.9 - Allen Robinson II, WR (CHI) 4.4 - JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR (PIT) 5.9 - Mark Ingram II, RB (BAL) 6.4 - Hayden Hurst, TE (ATL) 7.9 - Tom Brady, QB (TB) 8.4 - Jarvis Landry, WR (CLE) 9.9 - Jerry Jeudy, WR (DEN) 10.4 - Baltimore Ravens, DEF 11.9 - Darrell Henderson, RB (LAR) 12.4 - Wil Lutz, K (NO) 13.9 - Noah Fant, TE (DEN) 14.4 - Kirk Cousins, QB (MIN) I'm pretty happy with getting Henry and Chubb with my first two picks, if they're both healthy they're almost sure things to be top running backs this year. I think Juju is one of my weaker picks, but with Ben healthy I'm not at all upset that I picked him. I was hoping to pick Mark Andrews at 4.4, but unfortunately Thiath grabbed him at 4.2. Hurst at 6.4 was a reach, especially considering Higbee and Engram were both taken in the 7th round. I think he's gonna have a breakout season this year; Atlanta is a more pass oriented offense with less competition at TE. Jeudy was crazy his last two years at Alabama, and when I saw four wide receivers go off the board consecutively, including CeeDee Lamb at 9.5, I figured it was time to get my guy. I don't know wtf I was thinking picking Darrell Henderson, gonna be honest. Might hold onto him week 1 and see what’s up, or make him a preseason waiver casualty. Cousins is better than you, the reader, (probably) give him credit for. Grade: ![]() Team: so@etching GM: SwagSloth 1.10 - Davante Adams, WR (GB) 2.3 - Joe Mixon, RB (CIN) 3.10 - David Johnson, RB (HOU) 4.3 - Odell Beckham Jr., WR (CLE) 5.10 - Raheem Mostert, RB (SF) 6.3 - A.J. Green, WR (CIN) 8.3 - Matt Ryan, QB (ATL) 8.6 - Aaron Rodgers, QB (GB) (this pick brought to you by Waldo) 9.10 - Jared Cook, TE (NO) 10.3 - Darius Slayton, WR (NYG) 10.6 - Sony Michel, RB (NE) (traded from Waldo) 11.10 - Austin Hooper, TE (CLE) 13.10 - Tony Pollard, RB (DAL) 14.3 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers, DEF Adams is the most consistent receiver in one of the NFL’s most inconsistent receiving corps and is a great first pick. Swag and I had a conversation prior to the draft about where Mixon get drafted, and both of us had him mocked around 1.9, so I declare this to be a great pick. Mostert is exciting. I’d love to see A.J. Green do well this season (except for when he plays the Ravens). Hell, I'd like to see him have a few more good seasons. A.J. deserves a hall of fame caliber career; his first ~4 years in the league, he was on pace for a HOF career before injuries struck. I’m guessing this team is another QBBC scenario, what with Rodgers and Ryan being picked back to back. Cook is another guy I think is gonna have a career year, provided he can stay healthy. Grade: B- Team: Covid Injured Reserve GM: Thiath 1.11 - DeAndre Hopkins, WR (ARI) 2.2 - Tyreek Hill, WR (KC) 3.11 - Le'Veon Bell, RB (NYJ) 4.2 - Mark Andrews, TE (BAL) 5.11 - Stefon Diggs, WR (BUF) 6.2 - Jordan Howard, RB (MIA) 7.11 - Brandin Cooks, WR (HOU) 8.2 - Matt Breida, RB (MIA) 9.11 - Ben Roethlisberger, QB (PIT) 10.2 - Ke'Shawn Vaughn, TE (TB) 11.11 - Seattle Seahawks, DEF 12.2 - Christian Kirk, WR (ARI) 13.11 - Chase Edmonds, RB (ARI) 14.2 - Kai'imi Fairbairn, K (HOU) Harnessing the power of AFC East running backs, Thiath seems to have had himself quite a productive draft. I love the first five picks Thiath made here; I think Bell is the biggest question mark among those five, but if the Jets offense can actually put points on the board this year, Bell is an excellent pick at the end of the third. I think Brandin Cooks is going to have a better year than last year, but won't quite live up to his 2018 campaign. I personally would've liked Stafford over Captain Fatf*ck (am I allowed to swear in these things?), but if Ben is gonna have one more balls-to-the-walls season in his career, I think it's gonna be this season. Christian Kirk at 12.2 is a damn fine pick; if that Cards offense pops off like many are expecting them to, this pick will be a steal. Grade: A- Team: Jones'n for a TD GM: Lowlycrib 1.12 - Miles Sanders, RB (PHI) 2.1 - Julio Jones, WR (ATL) 3.12 - Melvin Gordon III, RB (DEN) 4.1 - D.J. Moore, WR (CAR) 5.12 - DJ Chark Jr., WR (JAX) 6.1 - Kareem Hunt, RB (CLE) 7.12 - Marvin Jones Jr., WR (DET) 8.1 - Ronald Jones II, RB (TB) 9.12 - Mike Gesicki, TE (MIA) 10.1 - Matthew Stafford, QB (DET) 11.12 - Cam Newton, QB (NE) 12.1 - DeSean Jackson, WR (PHI) 13.12 - New Orleans Saints, DEF 14.1 - Matt Prater, K (DET) Closing out our draft, we have Lowlycrib! For someone that got screwed into picking last in a 12-team draft, I think this was a pretty damn good draft. I'm not crazy about Sanders in the first, hopefully he's able to stay healthy this year behind that bulwark Eagles' offensive line. Love the Julio and Gordon picks. The Chark pick's value all depends on whether we see more of 2018 Chark or 2019 Chark on the field. Interested to see how Hunt does in that Browns' offense; he'll obviously be splitting carries with Chubb, but Hunt is also a better receiver than Chubb so we'll probably see him used in the passing game as well. Stafford finally gets picked! He will continue his regularly scheduled programming of never missing starts, 2019 was a fluke for him (and let us not forget he was playing some damn fine football before his injury.) Cam isn't a bad choice, but I feel like he could've been drafted just as easily in the 13th or 14th rounds.
