*Mock Draft Engine (S25 Edition) - Beefstu409 - 09-22-2020

Hello and welcome back to the Mock Draft Engine!  This post will be much shorter than it's predecessor which is a must read if you want to figure out how the tool works.  You can find that post here:

Mock Draft Engine

And of course you can find and use the sheet yourself here and keep in mind you'll have to make a copy:

Mock Draft Engine S25 Version

This year I'm just going to mention some of the takaways from the standard use for the engine, who it's projecting where, and what challenges came up.  For the most part the engine remains unchanged from S24.  The obvious exception is that there are two expansion teams that needed to be added.  This proved to be relatively straightforward but introduced several challenges.  Among them:
  • The players needed to be basically fully updated - pulling right from the tracker wasn't going to be very accurate
  • Adding the teams to the sheet is relatively manual and requires a lot of double checking
  • Several bugs from last version were found and squashed
  • San Jose has two picks in the first round and the engine isn't smart enough to not draft the same position twice (this remains unfixed)
The following is written using the default settings as you'll see if you go to the sheet how it is.

BER Berlin
The Fire Salamanders for now have their first round pick still at number one overall.  While the engine strongly believes that QB is their biggest need (they don't roster one) the engine thinks the QB class is not strong enough to take one #1OA.  This leads it to taking Dan Foster - Cornerback.  While it would actually rather take Dukberg QuakStak, I had to remove him from the list as he is a GM, I removed the rest of the GM players as well.  Cornerback is considered a big need for Berlin as they only roster 1, far below league average and fall just short of average TPE.

YKW Yellowknife
The Wraiths have second overall pick and in the engine they select Medicinal Toblerone - Offensive Line.  The engine gets really upset when you have a position unfilled and the Wraiths don't roster any OL or Kickers.  Kicker value is halved though so Offensive Line wins out here.

PHI Philadelphia
GOAT TANK!  Defensive Tackle ends up being a decently big need for Philadelphia and what could be better than a GOAT TANK to help out?  They're slightly older than league average and have a much lower TPE than the league.  If he falls to 3, this is definitely the lockdown answer for the engine.

SJS San Jose
San Jose's first pick is an easier one for the engine to handle, when it gets down to a second pick, it gets wonkier.  Djibutee McJimmerson is the Tight End of choice here since SJS does not currently roster one.  They also don't have an Offensive Lineman, but because the Offensive Line next best player isn't has high at TPE and the league average for OL is lower, they take the Tight End.

COL Colorado
Our runner ups this year get the runner up Defensive Tackle - Honky-Tonk Haywood joins the Yeti who have no Defensive Tackles on roster.  Because of the harsh penalty that the engine imposes on not rostering a player, the Yeti are strong favorites to grab a DT here.

BAL Baltimore
The hawks roster a lot more players than league average (27) but almost all positions fall below league average for TPE.  Fortunately they're a relatively young team.  Their worst position according to the sim is Offensive Line and as such, they take Felix Archstone.

HON Honolulu
Honolulu is very similar to Baltimore, they're young, have lots of players, and not lots of TPE.  The model is kind of puzzling on this one - it decides on Safety despite it being nearly their most competitive position in terms of TPE.  But because it's one of their older positions and they don't roster many of them, they take Tayshawn Crunk.

ARI Arizona
The Outlaws have a below average TPE running back who's about league average for years of experience.  This leads them to have a bit of a need to refuel in this position.  The Engine likes them for taking Mike Rotchburns at Running Back.

CHI Chicago
The Butchers get pretty lucky according to the Engine.  Somehow Tex Wrecks falls to them, the 275 TPE Defensive end also fills the Butchers biggest need on their team.  It's all but a lock if Tex falls this far.

NOLA New Orleans
New Orleans rosters only 2 Wide Receivers, and although they're somewhat young on this generally older team, the fact there's only two of them brings them to the need that the Engine has them taking.  Though it's very close between that and Defensive End.  Based on who's available, they take Harley Fank - Wide Receiver.

OCO Orange County
Another victim of the no Offensive Line penalty that the Engine assigns, OCO ends up taking Chuck Roth - Offensive Line to bolster that unit.

SAR Sarasota
Sarasota had a lot of similar ranked needs going into the draft, Linebacker, Cornerback, Safety, and Wide Receiver all came out as needs for the Sailfish.  However this class has the most talent at Linebacker and they take Hank Winchester - Linebacker here.  This could be a wrong pick if there are still no LB's off the board - because there's so many good ones in this draft Sarasota could possibly wait.

NYS New York
It's hard to be an expansion team and New York grabbed only one Running Back before the draft.  That's below league average (to be expected) but is also an older player (S17) so they want to reload here with younger talent.  Queue Jameson Vermillion - Running Back as their pick.

SJS San Jose
Just as the kitties had no Tight End, they also have no Offensive line and are the final victim of the Offensive Line hate that the sim assigns.  They end up picking Adam Mellott - Offensive Line to round out the first round.

I'm not qualified to talk on the methodology outside of that it's cool, but it has me going #1 overall and so I think Stu is on to something here.
