*Week 1 and 2 rookie recaps - EMPER0R - 10-07-2020

I have a spot lighted some notable rookie performances in the first two weeks of the season.  Everyone likes to grade drafts before the players hit the field.  Everyone also likes to make quick reactions to single game performances.  Some of the rookies below were just recently drafted in this season draft.  Some were sent back to the DSFL after they were drafted.

The first player I wanted to write about was Tayshawn Crunk Arizona Outlaws.

Pick 8 of the Season 25 ISFL draft.

Probably my favorite pick of the season 25 ISFL draft and in my previous article about the ISFL draft I said the following:

"He should be able to find his way on the field this season and make and immediate impact.  I think this was one of the best picks in the first round."

I'm not going to toot my own horn but I was right about him making an immediate impact.

Crunk first game in the ISFL -

3 tackles
1 Sack
2 pass deflections
2 Interceptions.

That's a ridiculous game for anyone and it was his first game.  He not only made an immediate impact, he may have one of the best defensive games of the year for anyone.  He made his first interception in the 2nd quarter.  Arizona ended up missing a field goal.  The very next play on defense Crunk sacked Slothliesburger for a -6.

In the third quarter with the defending champs driving, Crunk picked the ball off at the 6 yard line.

Obviously he was the Defensive player of the game.

Week 2

Crunk had only two tackles and 1 pass deflection in his second game in the ISFL.
Arizona lost this game as well.

I know it's the end of week 2, but he immediately vaulted himself to top of the list for defensive rookie of the year and defensive player of the year despite his 2nd game.  Although Arizona lost their first two games, they have to he happy with crushing their first round pick.  He will be a force for years and Arizona.

Hank Winchester - New York Silverbacks
Pick 13 of the season 25 ISFL draft.

I thought he was going a lot higher in the first round but fell to New York.  I had in in the top 5 and new he would have an immediate impact on New York.  Boy did he!  He earned Defensive player of the game with this in his first game in the ISFL.

11 tackles
1 tackle for loss
2 pass deflection
1 interception
1 Touchdown

Late in the 4th quarter Winchester ran back his interception for a touchdown tying the game up at 27.  Ultimately Berlin was the first expansion team to earn their win but New York nailed their first round pick.

In his second game of his career he didn't quite have the same impact.  6 tackles and one pass deflection.  Orange County's offense was very efficient after the first quarter and Ramza limited his mistakes.  Although he didn't have the same success as his first game, he is still playing very well for New York.

He is a very, very close second to Crunk for  defensive rookie of the year after the first two games.

Medicinal Toblerone New Orleans Seconline.

In the offseason Toblerone switched to defensive. In his first game he had 4 tackles and 2 tackles for loss.  Not a bad start for his first game as a defensive end.  Dont know if New Oreleans asked him to switch positions or he chose to but I'm certain he will have much bigger games moving forward.

In this second game he had even less impact than his first. 4 tackles was all he managed against Honolulu.  New Orleans defense as a whole had an abysmal game.  Honolulu put 55 points on the board and they just carved up New Orleans defense.  Perhaps New Orleans was onto something when Toblerone switched to defense, but he will need to make more of an impact on their defense.  New Orleans has given up a lead high of 71 points in there first two games.

Doug Howlett

I originally wanted to focus on rookies who were drafted in season 25, but Howlett's performance so far this season deserves recognition despite only being in week 2. What he has done so far has been very, very impressive.

Wide receiver of the year in the DSFL last season.  His first game in the ISFL he proved why he earned that award last year.

In his first game with Baltimore he had 7 catches for 129 yards.  He was the only rookie wide receiver with over 100 yards receiving and that game put him in second place in the league win yards after week one.

Week 2 wasn't a very good game for Baltimore. There wasn't many bright spots in there 23 - 6 loss except for Howlett.  7 catches for 115 yards.  Howlett seems pretty unstoppable right now.  He currently leads the league in receiving yards and is in second with 14 catches.

He is going to be a stud in this league for a long time and continues to prove why he was the best wide receiver in the DSFL last season.

Danny King Berlin Fire Salamanders

In the first game in Fire Salamanders history King had a solid performance on the ground.  19 carries for 90 yards.  No rushed longer than 13 yards but solid, consistent performance by King and he help Berlin win their first game ever.

In his second game of the season king had 17 carries for 73 yards. His longest rush was 11 yards.  Still no flashes from him but another solid performance.  The Fire Salamanders lost this defensive battle but they do have a solid back in this rookie. King is in second in the DSFL in rushing and if he can put together some stronger showings will be in the conversation for offensive rookie of the year.

Suleiman Ramza - orange county Otters

Ramza's first game in the ISFL was one to forget.  He went 10 for 28 for 159 yards and threw one int.  His passer rating was an abysmal 40.6.  Luckily for Orange County there special teams and defense showed up scoring TDs and gave Ramza his first win in the ISFL in his first game.

If the defense and special teams can keep playing this way orange county is going to have a great season.  Ramza can only go up from  here.

Week 2 was much, much better for Ramza.  Orange counties first drive in the game was a 3 and out.  The first play of the drive resulted in a sack.  The third play of the drive resulted in a sack.  It looked like the rookie was still pretty shaken after their first game.  He started to get into a rhythm in the second quarter.  Down by 3 with 4 minutes to go in the 4th quarter Ramza lead his team down the field and tossed a 25 yard touchdown to Nakamura with 1:51 left to go in the game.  The defense took care of the rest giving Ramza his second win in as many games.

He went 20/31 for 285 yards.  2 touchdowns and no interceptions.  Passer rating was 115.7.  Much, much better than week 1.

If Oranage County keeps winning and Ramza doesn't have a game like week one again, he has a real shot at offensive rookie of the year.  Being the Quarterback on a winning team while playing well certainly catches the eye of the voters.

Howlett is taking the league by storm. At the rate he is currently playing he is a shoe in for offensive rookie of the year, offensive player of the year and possible the league's most valuable player.  Ramza has the best chance so far of taking the offensive rookie of the year trophy from him it he can continue to put up numbers like he did in week 2. Plus orange county has a lot of supporting cast around Ramza we're Howlett is holding up Baltimore's offense.

Defensive rookie of the year is a two man race. Crunk's first game sent his expectations to the moon.  I'd be shocked if a defensive player had a similar game to he had in week one. Winchester also had a coming down to earth moment in week 2 much like Crunk had.  It's a neck and neck race between these two and I don't see any of the other defensive rookies stepping into the conversation after the first two weeks.
