*The Running Back Situation - OrbitingDeath - 10-14-2020 The Running Back Situation When I created my player I enlisted in a defensive position (cornerback) as I felt that defense would be much more needed for teams even if I wouldn’t be fully active. But what i didn’t really expect that I turned out to like this league a lot and decided to remain active. With the scouting interviews the recurring question was if you were open to a position switch, and I would, infact by the time the interviews were happening I knew I would be going all in and that this position switch actually become something that I was after. I wanted to become a quarterback or a running back instead, the two positions people usually get recommended not to create as when signing up as a new member. Two teams I was mainly talking to where interested in a switch, the Portland Pythons considered me as an option for quarterback, while the Dallas Birddogs would love to have me as a Running Back. So after being drafted by the Birddogs I was immediatly contacted by Amid with the question if I still was open to the switch, which I of course was. I knew I would get my chance to proof myself as a running back. A position I always liked for this sim but had never played before in different sim leagues. As I have decided for myself that I would like to remain a running back, also after the draft. I felt it was a good idea to see what I was getting myself into. So I went by the budget sheet and used the all player tab to see which teams had which running backs under contract. The TPE amounts are based on the ISFL Team Budgets Sheet and may differ from time of writing, as I am not sure if they are actively updated. Let’s have a look at the teams and what chances there are for me at the time of writing, as we always know trades can still happen an options can be taken or ignored. So it’s anyone’s guess at this point. ![]() ![]() S22 - Zed Keppler - Mutual Option for S26 S27 - 416 TPE S24 - Gunner Thorbjornsson - NTC - Signed until S26 - 521 TPE S25 - Darren Pama - Player Option for S27 - 349 TPE S25 - Terry Yaki - Signed until S27 - 216 TPE The only team on the list that currently has four running backs under contract and all of them still rather young. With Pama only being drafted last year and close to 350 TPE, he looks like a player that can be at the Outlaws for your to come and he will be ready to take over or Keppler next season already at his pace. With a mutual option for Keppler I can see that they will opt to go with a combination of Pama / Thorbjornsson for the upcoming years. Terry Yaki will not be much of a threat for a spot for Cobra Kai but the depth this team currently has, does not make it likely they will draft me. ![]() ![]() S22 - Kichwa Jones - Mutual Option for S27 - 545 TPE S24 - Zoe Watts - Signed until S26 - 576 TPE S24 - Sergio Kitchens - NTC - Signed until S26 - 266 TPE The Austin Copperheads also have quite a young running back squad. They have former Dallas Birddogs running back Zoe Watts on the team who will be there for years to come. Kichwa Jones on the other hand is currently inactive and has not updated since july of this year. With Kitchens also not being the fastest earner, I do see a great opportunity for Cobra Kai with the Copperheads to run a duo of Watts and Kai. This would be an awesome landing spot to make that scenario come true. While Cobra Kai still has to earn his ground in the DSFL, he certainly looks to be able to step in Zoe Watts her footsteps there. So a combination of these two in the ISFL together sounds like a great opportunity. ![]() ![]() S24 - Mai Fukushu - Mutual Option for S28 - 543 TPE S25 - King Tutankhamun - Mutual Option for S27 - 163 TPE The Baltimore Hawks have got the least depth at the running back position, especially after the team just traded Captain Rogers to Philadelphia Liberty for a 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft. With 1163 tpe for King Tutankhamun, Cobra Kai already has passed him on the depth chart if he would end up in Baltimore. The real question here will be if the Hawks are actually interested in running two running backs at the same time as they just traded a second starter away. With Mai Fukushu just signing a new deal we know this will be their running back for the future. In terms of depth this is certainly a place where Cobra Kai could potentially get playtime, but trading Captain Rogers away makes this team harder to read what there plans are. ![]() ![]() S23 - Joseph Petrongolo - Mutual Option for S26 and S27 - 630 TPE S23 - Danny King - Team Option for S26 and S27 - 410 TPE The first expansion team on the list is an interesting one. Both players here are 3 seasons older as Cobra Kai, but especially Danny King could be someone that could see his team option not be picked up if a younger running back enters the scene. So for the Fire Salamanders there always is an option to feature a new high earning draftee to couple with Petrongolo. But as King is still updating there is a bigger chance that they will just run with this duo for the years to come. ![]() ![]() S21 - Baby Yoda - Signed until S26 - 926 TPE S22 - Julio Tirtawidjaja - Signed until S26 - 659 TPE The Chicago Butchers have two solid running backs who will have a tpe lead over Cobra Kai for the first seasons to come. They will hit regression earlier but they will still remain competitive by the time Kai comes into the league. Despite the connection that Cobra Kai has with the general manager of the Butchers, it is still unlikely that he will opt to draft him, especially since he has a duo he should be able to count of for the future. It might be too early for them still to go for a high earning prospect this season. A slower pace earning one to have a Running Back in the pipelines however might be possible. ![]() ![]() S20 - Darrel Williams - Mutual Option for S26 - 1120 TPE S22 - Richard Gilbert - Mutual Option for S27 - 783 TPE S25 - Anders Christiansen - Mutual Option for S27 - 238 TPE Slightly older as the Chicago Butchers the Yeti are starting to think off the future as you can see with their selection of Anders Christiansen last draft. Sitting at 238 tpe with being a season younger, Kai does not see much competition here as he expects to have beaten him come draft time. But both RB’s still have enough life left probably to fight regression, making the Yeti also an unlikely option for now. ![]() ![]() S22 - Keʻokeʻo Kāne-Maikaʻi - Signed until S26 - 806 TPE S23 - Nicholas Ayers - Signed until S28 - 585 TPE One of the coolest teams in the league if you ask me, might be because of the water in which their Hahalua lives. Despite Ayers being signed by the team on long term, there might be a spot here as he is currently inactive. They might opt to trade him away for a younger specimen to become a running back duo with Keʻokeʻo Kāne-Maikaʻi (and yes, i did copy paste this name). The general manager of this team already is familiar with Cobra Kai as he is in the Birddogs lockerroom and also the co-manager knows Kai from other leagues. So for Kai it would feel like this would be a great fit, especially as he loves their logo, location and teamname. It’s actually really refreshing. EDIT: I had mixed up memories after talking with Siddhus, when i talked with him he mentioned a potential inactive cornerback. This was still in the back of my mind when writing this article. I just didnt realise this convo was from before my position switch. My sincere apologies to @Faded for incorrectly calling him inactive. ![]() ![]() S18 - Marcella Tōriki - Signed until S33 - 1181 TPE S15 - Forrest Gump - Signed until S25 - 595 TPE S25 - Mike Rotchburns - Signed until S27 - 285 TPE The oldest running back duo in the league and still he caps out on his speed easily. Forrest Gump just keeps running and running and running. It’s like he has never done anything else. With Tōriki being signed until S33 where she will make 20 million (so yeah realistically she will have retired by then to not have the team carry the burden of this salary towards the cap) it doesn’t look like she will ever be leaving NOLA. My expectations will be that she will still be around in a few seasons time, for Gump, his time might be running out. Rotchburns is only a year younger and looking at his recent updates he is consistently updating, so it will look like the will run with him once Gump finally gives up running. ![]() ![]() S17 - Ashley Owens - Signed until S25 - 709 TPE S25 - Buster Bawlls - Mutual options for S27 - 259 TPE The New York Silverbacks look to be an interesting option, Ashley Ownes seem to be able to continue for a few more seasons and while Bawlls is active, he could be in striking range. When looking at the bank sheet Bawlls still is listed under the unassigned with a bank account of 900k. Cobra Kai can be confident that if the Silverbacks would draft him that he would be in the starting line up by no time, alongside Owens that is. ![]() ![]() S22 - Tatsu Nakamura - Player options for S26/S27 - 872 TPE S23 - Keynal McZeal - Signed until S25 - 271 TPE S25 - Bronko Mills - NTC and Signed until S27 - 247 TPE The Orange County Otters have one of the lowest TPE secondary running backs in the league, so with just looking at the ISFL rosters, Cobra Kai was confident to team up with Nakamura for the future here. However with Bronko Mills they have a guy that they have signed until S27 and a no trading clause, so it looks like he will be their go to guy for the future as the NTC shows a lot of confidence. While Cobra Kai expected to have a high chance to be drafted here based on their depth, he currently has doubts that they will be interested based on their current prospect they took in last season. ![]() ![]() S16 - Sam Torenson - Mutual Option for S26-28 - 730 TPE S18 - Fuzzy Dotson - Signed until S25 - 659 TPE S24 - Captain Rogers - Player Option for S26 - 432 TPE The Philadelphia Liberty running back corps was almost as old as that of New Orleans, just not the amount of numbers that Tōriki had, as Dotson currently is 450 tpe behind her. This caused the Liberty to act towards the future when they traded the Silverbacks 2nd round pick to the Baltimore Hawks for Captain Rogers, to make sure they had a good option for the future. You could always wonder why not go for one of the running backs in the league with their second round pick, as the position usually doesn’t go early and with the Mr. Forty-Two and Cobra Kai there are two high end earners in the draft. But they might not want to have to gamble on a prospect and go with a guy that already has a decent build to take over faster. Due to this trade, it seems unlikely that the Liberty will draft Kai in the upcoming draft. ![]() ![]() S21 - Raphtalia Chan - Signed until S26 - 1089 TPE S23 - Running Back - Signed until S28 - 415 TPE A running back named Running Back, very original Nyko…. The Sailfish have an elite running back that will be able to help them for years to come, while the lower earning Running Back is still locked up until S28. Just due to this combination I think the Sailfish will not be an ideal landing spot for Cobra Kai, just because of the length of Running Back his deal, definitly not because Kai won’t be able to beat him in seasons time. ![]() ![]() S21 - Rando Cardrissian - Signed until S26 - 829 TPE S22 - Jamar Lackson - Signed until S27 - 885 TPE The current champions the San Jose Sabercats have such a solid high earning running back duo that will be able to help them out for seasons to come. Both Cardrissian as Lackson are around 800 tpe and wont be caught by Cobra Kai anytime soon. This is why they will likely not go for Kai in the draft. ![]() ![]() S18 - Mathias Hanyadi - Mutual option for S26 and S27 - 993 TPE S22 - Acura Skyline - NTC and Signed until S26 - 886 TPE S25 - Jameson Vermillion - Signed until S27 - 357 TPE The last team we will cover is Yellowknife Wraits, and this is also a team that seems full on running backs, with Hanyadi and Skyline they are still good for years to come and with Vermillion they actually have a high earning prospect out of last draft, which will put them in a great position for a long time for this position. Conclusion: Despite being recommended not to go as running back, I feel there are still options for Cobra Kai’s future. Like I said before, anything can happen still as during me writing this article we saw a running back renew his contract and another running back being traded (both on time to make adjustments to the article). There are some teams that stand out for me personally, also because I love nice and fancy logo’s (Hi Austin, Hi Honolulu) but also as with a move here or there, they might be nice locations. It will be interesting to see who will actually be interested in Cobra Kai come draft time, as he knows for sure, he does not want to switch around again, but make his mark on this league as a running back.
