*DSFL Week 5 Recap - LB3737 - 10-22-2020 Week 5 was objectively the worst week of the DSFL so far, however, for consistency’s sake (and because I like money), I am still going to write about it, but it might be a bit shorter than usual. It will follow the same format as it always does, and I foresee a significant shuffling of my power rankings at the end. Game 1 : Kansas City Coyotes (2-2) @ London Royals (2-2), Royals win 29-10 A highly competitive divisional matchup with playoff implications, relatively early in the season. Whichever team won this game would go to a positive record, with the losers posting a negative record. In the end it was the Royals who came up trumps, easily enough, over their Kansas City counterparts. The Royals came into this matchup with an obvious game plan, which was to stop Kansas City’s rushing game and force them to throw. This worked and they held KC to only 110 rushing yards throughout their entire team. As well as this, the London quarterback, Cortez, has a very good game. He threw for 200 yards on 24 completions, throwing 2 TDs and only 1 pick, which the Coyotes punished, returning it for a TD, their only touchdown of the game. OPOTG : Charlemagne Cortez, Quarterback, London – Cortez played very impressively, and did what he needed to do to lead his team to a win and 3-2 record. With 200 yards on 66% completion, 2 TDs and a QBR of 87.7 DPOTG : Peter Patterson, Cornerback, Kansas City – Despite losing, and his team allowing 29 points, this man got 4 Tackles, 2 PDs and an interception, which he returned for a TD. This TD was his teams only score of the game, and he deservedly picks up DPOTG for this game. Game 2 : Dallas Birddogs (0-4) @ Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (3-1), Myrtle Beach wins 16-14 The winless Birddogs travelled to the fortress that is Myrtle Beach looking to pull of a massive upset and get their first win of the season. Unfortunately, the Buccaneers had different plans for this game and managed to eke out a win. Credit where credit is due, Dallas managed to stick it to Myrtle Beach and were winning up until the fourth quarter. However, Dallas will be kicking themselves over the way they lost this game, as with 2:50 on the clock they had possession at MBs 29 yard line, with a field goal putting them ahead. They decided to throw the ball, and unfortunately for quarterback Caliban, it was intercepted. Besides that interception, the Dallas qb had a relatively solid game, throwing for 175 yards and a TD on 17 completions The Buccaneers showed though, why they are a very good team, winning a game in a fashion that only the best of teams can do, which is, when the going gets tough, knuckle down and grind the win out. Despite gaining less yards on offense than their opponents, Myrtle Beach managed to hold onto the ball when they had it, recording no turnovers and punting once less than Dallas. OPOTG : Leo Bloomfield, Kicker, Myrtle Beach – For only the second time in five weeks, I’m picking a kicker as the OPOTG. I felt Bloomfield deserved it as we instrumental in his teams win, recording 3 field goals, 1 from 57 yards (a new Myrtle Beach record), and a go-ahead 26 yarder in the 4th quarter, which would eventually be the winning score. DPOTG : Richard Leaking, Linebacker, Dallas – For the second week in a row, Leaking gets DPOTG with an impressive tackling stat line. This week he registered 14 tackles, which doubles everyone else’s count bar Zack Mouse, who got 8. An impressive performance indeed from the Dallas linebacker. Game 3 : Tijuana Luchadores (2-2) @ Norfolk Seawolves (1-3), Luchadores win 7-3 The Luchadores visited Norfolk in what was probably the worst game of the season so far. Tijuana managed to win the game, in extremely depressing fashion, unless you bet the under. It was probably a deserved win for Tijuana as they outgained their opponents by more than 100 yards, but Norfolk will still see this as a missed opportunity to notch another win and keep some playoff hopes high, especially in a divisional matchup like this. The offensive play was not impressive, with the quarterbacks of the game combining for 3 interceptions, and the only touchdown of the game being a 13 yard pass from Mike Boss Jr. to Julian Jurevicius. The running backs did enjoy slightly more success, with the three main backs combing for 221 yards on the ground. Overall though, nobody performed excellently in this game. OPOTG : Mr. Forty Two, Running Back, Norfolk – A solid performance from Forty-Two, as he was the only no qb player to break 100 yards in this game, only just, with 107 total. I decided it was only fair to give the award to him as both of the qbs threw interception and had sub 60 QBRs. DPOTG : Xmus Flaxon Jaxon-Waxon – There was a lot more competition for the award on this side of the ball and in the end I decided XFJW was the player who’s individual stats were the best of the games, with 5 tackles, 2 PDs and an interception. Game 4 : Minnesota Grey Ducks (3-1) @ Portland Pythons (3-1), Grey Ducks win 20-3 Minnesota travelled to Portland for this important divisional matchup, with the losers dropping out of a playoff spot, and the game was expected to be a closely fought contest. What followed was awful for Portland, as they were subject to a figurative schooling in their own back garden. Minnesota opened up to an early 2 score lead in the first quarter and did not look back for the rest of the game. Portland won’t have known what hit them, as they did not turn the ball over once all game but just could not get anything going all game, with star qb LeBron James III throwing for just 92 yards. Their lone score was a 39 yard FG in the 4th quarter, when the game was already basically done, by new kicker Johnathan Smith. OPOTG : Mike Rotchburns, Running Back, Minnesota – Minnesota’s leading rusher ran riot on the usually solid Portland defense in this game, notching 124 yards and a score on 33 carries, earning him this games OPOTG. DPOTG : Brick Van Sanzo, Defensive End,Minnesota - Despite giving the Portland offense virtually nothing all game, the Minnesota defenders surprisingly did not register the craziest stat line, but they were still stellar. This player, in particular, had 3 tackles, 2 for a loss and a sack in a DPOTG-worthy performance. Offensive Player of the Week London Quarterback Charlemagne Cortez The focal point in his teams great win this week, Cortez deservedly nets himself his first OPOTW of the season from me, although a special mention must be given to kicker Leo Bloomfield, who was being seriously considered for the award as a special teamer Defensive Player of the Week Kansas City Cornerback Peter Patterson In a week that did not have a particularly outstanding defensive performance, Patterson stood out in his teams game. He scored his teams only TD, and despite how average the Coyotes looked during their game, he still did not let up, and gave it his all. POWER RANKINGS 1. Myrtle Beach Buccaneers ![]() 2.
