*The Not Quite Half Way There DSFL Award Races - UberBJ - 10-25-2020

Disclaimer: I attempted to be unbiased during this but was pleasantly surprised that my own team just has a lot of great capped players this season. So take it with a grain of salt and gib me moneys so I can buy more Dotts. <3

Quarterback of the Year

1) Jackie Daytona (MBB) - Hard to argue with Daytona here as he’s leading the league in yardage by a decent amount and has a 4/1 TD to INT ratio with the 2nd highest TD count. He’s also been able to move the chains with his feet as the 2nd best rushing QB.

2) Charlemagne Cortez (LDN) - While not a big drop-off from 1st in yards, Cortez has seen struggles with throwing interceptions the first half of the season with a 9/5 TD to INT ratio. He is leading in TDs by 1 and posts a good passer rating overall.

3) Ryan Negs (MINN) - Negs could easily see him at #2 here if he could take care of the ball better as the season progresses. Overall he appears to be a better passer than Cortez but is posting a very tough 7/4 TD to INT ratio.

None of the top 3 QBs this year are heavy in the dual threat category, focusing more on pure passing. As such, Daytona stands at the top very clearly with his safe play and strong receiving corps.

Offensive Lineman of the Year

1) Ajay Krishna (MBB) - Krishna is the leader in Pancakes by a margin of 4 with 33 and has not allowed a sack all season while playing Tackle. Easy pick here.

2) Felix Archstone (KC) - Archstone is an easy 2nd place with 29 pancakes and no sacks allowed.

3) Adam Mellott (TIJ) - Mellott is posting a strong 29 pancakes but has allowed a sack so far which puts him behind Archstone.

This award race should be pretty straightforward this year given the top 3 being this far ahead this early.

Tight End of the Year

1) Djibutee McJimmerson (MBB) - Because I’m biased, I’m putting my player first by virtue of his volume and yardage lead. He’s ahead by 33 yards but is not leading in TDs. With less drops and 1 more pancake than #2 Frank Michell, I give him the edge because I’m a firm believer that you can’t control where your looks are but, you can control what you do when your number is called.

2) Frank Michell (LDN) - Michell is 1B here for me because while he’s not the leader in yards, he is killing it in the redzone with 5 TDs. He is playing out of the FB position, but either way they are average the same yards per catch. He does have a noteworthy 9 drops, 2nd in the league at FB/TE.

3) JaJa Ding Dong (MINN) - Jaja is having a strong and efficient rookie year with only 5 drops while posting 209 yards and a TD. He’s also absolutely dominating in blocking with 14 pancakes with zero sacks. I don’t see anyone catching him for the 3rd nomination, but I also don’t see him getting close to either McJimmerson or Michell.

This is a hot race that could come down to the wire and what the voters perceive to be most important come awards time. Side note: Blocking TE’s need more love from the SIM and voters.

Wide Receiver of the Year

1) Mark Callous (DAL) - Callous has just been a beast this year, showing up with 42 catches for 525 yards and 3 TDs. He’s the leader in TDs and close in every other category while only have 8 drops on his 50 attempts.

2)  Zach Crossley (MBB) - Crossley is average a league leading 15.3 yard per catch average (2nd is 13.4). The only 2 separators come award time currently are his TDs (0) and his 12 drops. If he catches 4 of those, he’s the yardage leader and probably has 1-2 TDs putting him in the talks at #1.

3) Mario Messi (POR) - Messi is having a stellar rookie year where he edges out Speedman for #3 consideration. He has the 4th best yardage and 3 TDs on the sheet, while being insanely efficient with only 6 drops.

I think a lot could change between 1 and 2, as well as a couple people possible sneaking in at 3 later in the season here. Also I wanted to shoutout to the TD leader Alex Reed for his stupid good 5 TDs on 19 catches so far.

Running Back of the Year

1) Mike Rotchburns (MINN) - This boy quacks. Within 6 yards of leading the league, with 43 less attemps than Mr 42. He’s averaging a great 4.3 YPC, has 4 TDS, and only 3 drops in the passing game. The knock against him is going to be his 3 fumbles lost, which could see him drop down a bit but I still think he’s having a fantastic rookie season.

2) Cobra Kai (DAL) - Another fantastic rookie here. He’s leading the league with a 5.4 YPC average, which is massive. He also has 4 TDs, and is 3rd in yardage on the year. I think he could be an easy pick at #1 too, especially with his better hands showing 1 fumble.

3) Akil Ozymandias (MBB) - This is a bit of a dark horse pick because he’s playing FB and is a bit off of the yardage totals of the others. But what sets him apart is his league leading  5 TDs and his complete lack of any fumbles. He’s become a very consistent commodity for MB in his rookie year.

The top 8 RBs could all make this list is the honest truth, so this could be a great race to watch. If Pama puts more TDs on the board, he could shoot up to 1 or 2 easily as well.

Defensive Lineman of the Year

1) Ernest Lover (LDN) - Lover has started his DSFL career as the sack defensive lineman sack leader, while also chipping in a force fumble and 3 TFL. He’s 2nd in total tackles, with his only knock being he’s missed 4 tackles so far. He’s have an great impact in every aspect of the DL game.

2) Matty Martinsson (POR) - Martinsson is right behind Lover with his stats, posting a leading 45 tackles, 5 TFL, 3 sacks, and 1 FF. He’s also batted down one at the line. I could see him overtaking Lover as the season goes, but he’s currently chasing for sacks.

3) Sam Roes (NOR) - One of the few bright spots for Norfolk has been Roes. I don’t think run stuffers get enough love, so I’m putting him at 3. He’s had a league leading 13 tackles for loss and 2 forced fumbles, and still managed to get a sack on the board. He’s quite a bit down on total tackles with 27 but almost every tackle is a big setback for opposing offenses.

I think the top 3 is pretty set for now, but you could argue a few at 3. I’d like to also highlight rookie Primo Berto (DAL) for his 11 TFLs and 4 Sacks on 23 tackles as a darkhorse later in the season.

Linebacker of the Year

1) Thomas Rose (KC) - Rose is not a big volume tackler, but what he does do is ruin QB’s days. He has an nutty 3 INTs so far, 4 PDs, and adds 4 sacks to that. When he’s not busy hitting the QB or picking them off, he’s also doing well on the run stuffing with 4 TFLs. The only knock against him is he doesn’t get as many tackles as his contemporaries, but that’s ok when no one is catching the balls near him.

2) L’Gazzy Burfict (LDN) - Burfict has been making plays everywhere on the field. He’s 2nd in tackles, has 4 TFLs, is a QB’s worst nightmare with 5 sacks and a 3 PDs, and also has a FF. He’s not leading in any category, but he’s putting together an elite performance in all of them.

3) Richard Leaking (DAL) - Dick Leaking has had a bit of an off season for him, but he’s still leading the league in tackles by 9. He’s got 6 TFL when he’s shooting the gaps, and 1 PD. The only downside is he’s missed 9 tackles too, which I expect he will correct going forward knowing the player he is.

This race probably going to change a bit as I don’t expect Rose to continue with his ~.5 INT/Game ratio.

Defensive Back of the Year

1) Zach Mouse (MBB) - It’s good to see a SS make it this high on the list. Mouse has been prolific in every phase of the game, and is easily my overall best DB. He is also tied for leading with 3 interceptions (one returned for a TD), has a forced fumble, 4 PDs, and even a blocked punt. He’s also made 40 tackles, only missing 2.

2) James Hoffman (MBB) - Hoffman is doing exactly what you want a CB to do with his league leading 3 picks and 11 PDs. He’s been pretty active in the tackle game as well with 32 and a FF added in, with only 1 missed tackle all season.

3) Byron Blackwell ( DAL) - Blackwell is almost identical to Hoffman this year, except he has only 9 PDs and no forced fumbles. The other knock that puts him down to 2 is he has had 6 missed tackles.

There’s 2-3 that are right on the cusp of making the top 3 (Patterson is the big one).

Kicker of the Year – Kickers are people too!

1) Leo Bloomfield (MBB) - 13/17 FGs, 17/17 XPs. Decent accuracy and good volume.

2) Gluteus Maximus (MINN) - 11/14 FGs, 6/7 XPs. Decent accuracy and good volume. Missed extra point. (Boooo!)

3) Something McDerpants (LDN) - 11/11 FGs, 17/18 XPs. Good %, lacking volume, missed extra point (Boooo!)

I’ll be honest, trying to do this years kicker awards when there's only 3-5 (one midseason FA) player kickers is really hard and uninspiring work. I love you kickers, but uh, let’s see how the rest of the season plays out.

Punter of the Year – Punters are not people though.

1) Leo Bloomfield (MBB) - 44 punts, 2065 punt yards, 46.9 AVG. He’s just booting it, and had a 67 yard record tying one in week 6.

2) Something McDerpants (LDN) - 44 punts, 1900 yards, 43.2 AVG. Pretty good for a rookie.

3) Gluteus Maximus (MINN) - 42 punts, 1811 yards, 43.1 AVG. He’s better at kicking, but still having a good rookie year too.

DAS BOOT?

Returner of the Year

1) Mark Callous (DAL) - Callous has both a KR AND PR touchdown on the year which makes him the leader here easily. But let’s not forget he also has the 2nd highest KR average at 24.8 and a total of 472 yards. Even without this leading volume (19 KR and 14 PR)I think he’s the best here.

2) Djibutee McJimmerson (MBB) - Because I can. While only returning kicks for 2 games, he’s throwing up a massive league leading 26.2 KR Average and 210 yards already on 8 returns. I think if he gets a full season he could be in the running for #1. The big knock is GM Thor is afraid to unleash him on PRs currently.

3) Darren Pama (POR) - Pama boasts the highest PR yardage and is average a great 13.7 there. He’s also just behind Callous in KR Average with 24.7.

I put myself at 2 because a TE returning and having the highest AVG is hilarious. But really, the 2 contenders here currently due to volume and PR too are Callous/Pama. Don’t hate me.

Offensive Player of the Year

1) Jackie Daytona (MBB) - QB

2) Mark Callous (DAL) - WR

3) Mike Rotchburns (MINN) - RB

Defensive Player of the Year

1) Zach Mouse (MBB) - SS

2) Thomas Rose (KC) - LB

3) James Hoffman (MBB) - CB

Most Valuable Player

1A) Djibutee McJimmerson – He's a top TE. He’s a top KR. He even ran a few plays at RB out of shotgun. What can’t he do other than write an unbiased article?

2A) Jackie Daytona (MBB) - Daytona get’s the nod here with positional bias. He’s having a stellar start to the year and should continue strong with the OL and receiving threats in front of him.

2) Zach Mouse (MBB) - Mouse is probably my pick if there wasn’t so much emphasis on QBs. He is having a ridiculous start to the year with all of his impacts.

3) Thomas Rose (KC) - Rose is my pick here because any single player that can effect an opposing QBs play as much as him at LB is insanely valuable.

I hope I didn’t upset any teams or individuals besides Dallas in this. Birdoug go Tweetwoof lmap. If I did, please DM Frost with all complaints.

Great article! Very well thought through and argued. Always love seeing some DSFL love and attention.

I'll point out that as of last season DBotY was split into separate awards for CB and S. I believe that will still be the case next year? Definitely not just saying this to get you to rewrite that section so I'm in the top 3 Wink

RE: The Not Quite Half Way There DSFL Award Races - UberBJ - 10-25-2020

@slate I hope it's split between CB/S, because it definitely would make more sense that way. I must have missed that when I was looking back! (You got an italics mention, you'd be top 3 easy if we took out S)
