Week 1: Orange County Otters at Arizona Outlaws

The first quarter started out disastrous for the Otters. A first down sack crippled the drive before it even got started. The ensuing drive for the Outlaws wasn't particularly dazzling but advantageous field position allowed them to kick a 42 yard field goal and get on the score board first. On the following Otters drive, a second sack on first down lit up the Arizona crowd. QB Boss got back under center and drove down the field into Outlaw territory. A slight stall though prevented the Otters charge to the end zone and they had to settle for a field goal, tying up the game. The second Outlaw drive started out strong but after three first downs, they failed to drive any further and were forced to punt. The Otters finally avoided a first down sack, but on second down Mike Boss threw a Pick Six to Safety Ryan Flock. The defensive TD put the Outlaws up 10-3. The following Otters drive stuttered after a penalty set them back and the quarter drew to a close soon after.

The Otters began the second quarter dinking and dunking, and having another penalty, but made their way well into Outlaw territory, but their kicker hit the ball wide left on their second field goal attempt of the evening. Taking the ball over after the failed attempt, the Outlaws QB King Bronko was sacked on second down, and then the two teams traded penalties, with Arizona gaining a first down from a strict holding call. After the penalty the Outlaws committed another of their own and failed to make any headway. Forced to punt, the Outlaws sent their defense onto the field again. Orange County gained a quick first down before Boss was sacked for a second time by LB Harrif Ernston. Even after the sack though, the Otters were in Field Goal range for a third time. This time Langdon split the uprights. With a 4 point lead, the Outlaws took to the field to add onto their small lead. They put their faith in Reg Mackworthy but eventually the drive stalled out and the Outlaws were forced to punt again. On the ensuing drive the Otters came out throwing. With time ticking down, Boss completed 3 crucial passes driving them deep into the enemy territory. However the clock was not on their side and instead of being able to get it across the goal line, they were forced to line up for yet another field goal attempt. Like before, Langdon botched the kick with only 6 seconds on the clock, and forcing their team to go into the locker room down by 4 at the half.

After the sultry Outlaw cheerleaders did their halftime dance routine to the musical stylings of Vanilla Ice and Styx, Arizona received the ball. Unfortunately their drive wasn't very productive and only got one first down and they had to punt. The Otters were doing their successful dinking and dunking downfield when Boss was sacked yet again. This time it was by the Outlaw rookie Luke Leuchly, proving his pick was a solid one. Unfortunately the Otters couldn't work themselves out of the hole left by the sack and punted again. Bronko came out again, leading his team to a disappointing three and out and the crown, despite a lead, grew uneasy at the inability for the offense to generate significant yardage. After the punt, Orange County came out firing. Both the pass and run game generated plenty of yardage, but a second sack by the rookie Leuchly provided yet another untimely setback for the Otters. Again, unable to gain a first, Otters punted back to the Outlaws. This drive for the Outlaws ended like so many others, as a three and out. All these Outlaws punts had to be making that defense tired. Boss passed to Wright, Phelps and Bowers as they drove the field and into the fourth quarter.

The first play of the 4th quarter was yet another Otter field goal attempt, resulting in Langdon staying true to the alternating hit and miss formula, nailed the 47 yarder, making it 10-9. The Outlaws felt the momentum in the Otters favor, but clung to that one point lead. The first drive in the 4th quarter however stalled quickly and resulted in a punt after a sad three and out. The next drive for the Otters relied heavily on Bowers and Jenkins out of the backfield. After gaining a first down, with help from a Outlaw penalty, the drive was setback by a dropped pass, an illegal shift penalty and a stuffed run. The Otters had to punt. The solid Otters defense came onto the field and forced another three and out, causing a lot of concern among Outlaw fans. The Outlaws defense though, had held strong all day too. This time, in the fourth quarter, they needed to stop the Otters as time was on their side. Boss looked good at first, getting a very fast first down, however their drive was halted when Luke Leuchly, yet again, sacked Mike Boss. This time Boss coughed up the ball and it was recovered by Arbin Asipi on the Otters 33 yard line. This was a great break for the Outlaws. King took the field and refused to have another three down stall. He knew they needed the touchdown to put this game in their much favorable position. Three straight on point passes resulted in a touchdown to Mayran Jackson, giving the Outlaws a 17-9 lead. With their backs against the wall, Boss and the Otters had to step up. A combination of passes and rushes gave the Otters a first down but great defense by the secondary prevented Boss from completing 2 passes giving them a rough 3rd down and 10. A third pass, complete to Phelps, fell short of the first down marker and so they were forced to punt. With a little breathing room, Bronko took the field and let his running back do the work, but he Otters front didn't give up much, and so they had another three and out on their hands. Time was no longer in Orange County's favor and they needed a good drive. With 3:35 on the clock, they needed to find a way to the endzone and get a 2 point conversion to tie it up. The head coach basically put the kicker on the bench, if it was a 4th down, they were gonna go for it. And so they did, on the first set of four downs, the Otters went for it on fourth and got the first down. As they drove the field slowly, the clock kept ticking. Orange County used their timeouts as they crossed the midfield. They cnservative play calling to not take deep shots in the endzone proved to be costly as 3 to 4 yard gains kept the drive alive but they couldn't get close enough to the endzone. Eventually time drew to 0:00 and the Otters were left holding the ball at the Outlaw 37 yard line.

Post-Game Report:

It's an anomaly when these kinds of games happen. One team dominated the stat sheets. Boss was 25/35 and threw for 243 yards while Bronko only threw for 146 yards. The big difference was that Bronko did not give up an interception for a touchdown and he was able to drive favorable field position into a score. Time and time again the Otters had to settle for a field goal. 3/5 in the kicking game was a factor but even if they got both the misses, they still would have lost by 2. The otters running backs and wide receivers dominated the stats too. Jenkins and Bowers rushed for 92 and 69 yards, respectively, while Mackworthy only rushed for 53 yards for the Outlaws. The Otters receiver Phelps put up 90 yards, while Outlaws best wideout only brought in 64 yards. Five players for Orange County caught for over 20 yards, only 3 did for Arizona. Defensively the Otters forced multiple three and outs but it was the defense of the Outlaws creating sacks at opportune times and a crucial fourth quarter fumble that put them over the top.

A solid game overall.

Game MVP: Luke Leuchly 3 Sacks, 11 tackles 1 Forced Fumble and 1 Pass deflected.
