*Excelsior's Daily Game Review #12 - excelsior - 12-07-2020 We’re back live, with the 12th game review of the season, and now I’m much more refreshed and ready to go. In many of my game reviews I’ve been reviewing a lot of older games and I decided that today I’d try and do a newer game, cause why not. I need to give some love to the players who are currently in the league. Now I found quite an interesting game to review. Most of my game reviews are on games that are very close and come down to the wire, so for today I thought I’d change it up a bit by reviewing a more random-ish game. I’m not saying this game isn’t going to be close, but I’m just not going to spoil anything going further. I’ll try and keep you guys on the edge of your seats throughout the reading. The matchup we have prepared for us today is set in S21. The week number is 6 as the Outlaws travel to Philadelphia to take on the Liberty. Now, neither of these teams were regarded as good teams, and in fact, both these teams would finish with a 3-10 record. So this was a sloppy game between 2 poor teams, but when you have 2 teams of equal skill level, whether that be equally good or equally bad, you’re usually in for a fun game. The game opens up with a 9 yard rush by Ruff, but he gets stuffed on the next 2 plays, and the Outlaws punt on the first drive of the game. Wilf breaks up a checkdown to Torenson on Philly next drive on a 3rd and 1, and Philly punts back to Arizona. Cue comes out strong with a 32 yard pass to Irving, and Ruff gets 2 good runs combined for 16 yards, and the Outlaws offense is moving it down the field. 1 play later, Cue throws a screen to Ruff who runs it in for the TD. Arizona goes up 7-0. Wilf gets a sack on Philly’s next drive, making it 3rd and 14. Phoenix finds Dotson for 15 yards, however, somehow getting them the first down. But Pete Miller sacks Phoenix a play later, making it 3rd and 14 again. They can’t work magic this time, and are forced to punt. Cue gets absolutely destroyed on his first scramble of the game, going back 5 yards. Then comes back to back sacks by Howyanow, making it 4th and 27. Nkiah sacks Phoenix on the first play of the new drive, and Philly eventually punts. On a 3rd and 14, Cue passes to Irving, but it gets picked off by Stephens at the AZ 31 yard line. On the first play of the 2nd quarter, Phoenix throws a pass to Blocksdale Jr., which gets intercepted by Nkiah and returned for 14 yards. The teams have just traded interceptions. Outlaws go 3 and out and have to punt. Philly starts a nice drive off with a 16 yard completion, but a penalty holds them back. A 26 yard completion to Varga gets the drive going again, but a sack by Miller kills the momentum again and they’re forced to punt again. They get the ball back as the Outlaws go 3 and out. Philly goes on an amazing drive, getting 35 yards on 3 plays. On a 3rd and 10, they convert with a 10 yard pass. A couple plays later, plus some Outlaws penalties, Phoenix throws a 7 yard TD pass to Blocksdale Jr. for their first points of the game, tying the game at 7-7. With 2 minutes to go, Arizona drives down the field and kicks a 56 yard FG, with a drive that featured 3 passes by Cue for 30 yards. Philly can’t do anything with their last possession of the half, and we go into half with Arizona up 10-7. A penalty + a run sets up Philly at their own 45 yard line to start the half. Phoenix catches on fire, much like the animal does (haha please laugh). He throws a 31 yard pass, then a 4 yard one, then a 14 yard one, then a 6 yard one, and that last 6 yarder went for a TD. Philly goes up 14-10 with 11 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. The Outlaws offense stalls again, and goes 3 and out. A terrible punt + good return sets up Philly at the Outlaws 40 yard line. Back to back penalties by the Outlaws puts Philly at the Outlaws 20 yard line. 2 plays later, Phoenix finds Varga for 12 yards and a TD. They go up 21-10. The Outlaws manage to get a first down, so they can’t technically go 3 and out, but they immediately stall and can’t get another down, forcing them to punt… again! Philly’s offense stalls again, going 3 and out. Arizona gets the ball back down 11 points, with 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Looks like they’ll go 3 and out, but wait, Cue finds Bur’Berry for an 11 yard completion on 3rd and 4. But on a 3rd and 10, it looks like their time is over, for realz this time. But wait, Cue finds Irving up the middle for an easy completion and 28 yards. 2 plays later, on a 3rd and 9, Cue finds Donut on a play action call for 13 yards and a TD. Wow, what a drive, 3 big 3rd down passes. Outlaws only converted 4 third downs in this game, and 3 came on this drive. The game is 21-17, Outlaws are down. On a 3rd and 1 for Philly, Torenson busts up the middle for 7 yards. But on the next play, Phoenix throws his 2nd interception of the game to Knight, which is returned 29 yards and puts AZ on the Philly 24. Cue gets sacked for 6 yards, and for some reason, AZ elects to punt… Instead of kicking a 47 yard FG, when they already made a 56 yarder earlier. Philly goes 3 and out, and AZ gets the ball back. Cue manages to convert a 3rd and 4 on the next drive, but Arizona goes nowhere after that, punting again. On the first play of Philly’s next drive, Phoenix throws another interception, his 3rd of the game. Arizona gets awesome field position but they can’t do anything with it, kicking a chip shot FG. Philly manages to get a 1st down on the net drive after completing a 13 yard pass on 3rd and 9. On a 2nd and 9 a play later, Phoenix throws his 4th interception of the game, again to Knight who runs it almost all the way back but gets tackled at the 1 yard line after showboating. Cue throws an easy TD pass to Irving on the next play and Arizona goes up 28-21 after a good 2 point conversion. 3 interceptions by Phoenix in the last 9 minutes of play have really tanked this Philly team. After a good 10 yard rush by Torenson, Phoenix lines up and throws to Vuxta, but wait, the pass is intercepted for a 5th time today, and Arizona gets great field position and they cap the drive off with a FG. Philly starts on their own 9 yard line, and this time Phoenix doesn’t throw an interception, and actually manages to convert a 3rd and 1 with a 19 yard pass to Varga. On a 3rd and 3, the pass is broken up by Scarlett, but on the 4th and 3, Torenson bounces to the outside for 7 yards. A couple plays later + some penalties, Phoenix finds Blocksdale Jr. for 17 yards. On a 3rd and 1 with 1 and a half minutes to in the game, Phoenix finds Vuxta for 17 yards. On the AZ 2 yard line, Phoenix throws another interception in the endzone, to cap off his terrible day. What a weird game. Philly completely threw the game, more specifically Phoenix, who threw 4 4th quarter interceptions, and that’s certainly a day he’s going to erase from his memory. Outlaws take it 31-21, and join me later as I do my 13th game review soon. RE: Excelsior's Daily Game Review #12 - zaynzk - 12-07-2020 Vintage Phoenix |
