Defensive Line Standouts Week 2: Electric Boogaloo

Welcome to Week 2 of our (hopefully) weekly look at defensive line performances across the league! While last week saw the rise of the rookies, the week showcased the return of the veterans. The Arizona Outlaws put on a clinic this week by recording 10 sacks against the Philadelphia Liberty in what will henceforth be known as “The Sackening” and, unsurprisingly, each one of their starting defensive linemen made the list. The Baltimore Hawks also continued their quiet domination of the line by recording 6 sacks (for the second week in a row) against what many consider to be the best line in the NSFL, the Orange County Otters. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin! (Side Note: $ denotes number of appearances on the list)

Defensive End Top Performers
J. Tuck ARI ($) 6 TCK, 0 TFL, 4 SCK
Well, it looks like Tuck just caught a case of the Winchesters last week. He exploded against the Liberty this week coming up with a mind-blowing 4 sacks (highest of any NSFL player this year) and an impressive 6 tackles to boot. Tuck was a true force of nature this week and returned to season 1 form. He will face off against two of the more porous offensive lines during weeks 3 and 4 in the Las Vegas Legion and the Colorado Yeti, who in only two games have allowed 11 and 8 sacks, respectively.

K. Hendrix BAL ($$) 3 TCK, 0 TFL, 2 SCK, 1 FF
Hendrix makes his second appearance on this list in as many weeks, and deservedly so. Not only is he the only defensive end to record multiple sacks in both weeks this season, but he also added 3 tackles and a forced fumble to his stat sheet for this week as well. The Hawks have already amassed 12 sacks in only two games, with Hendrix responsible for 4 alone. The next two games for Hendrix will be interesting as in week 3 he faces a SaberCats line that has only allowed 1 sack on the year, and in week 4 he faces a very sieve-like line in the Philadelphia Liberty that have allowed a league leading 11 sacks.

E. Charlton SJS ($$) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Charlton is one of only two rookies on the list this week after 4 made an appearance last week. In 2 weeks, he has totaled 7 tackles, 1 sack, and a NSFL leading 3 tackles for loss. The SaberCats seem to have a star in the making on their hands with Charlton, and the league may need to start paying attention soon. In week 3 Charlton will face a stout line in the Hawks, who have only allowed 3 sacks, followed by a week 4 matchup with an offensive line that many considered to be the best in the league at the start of the season, the Orange County Otters. Unfortunately for the Otters, they have allowed the second most sacks in the league with 10.

Other Top Performers:
B. Blade COL ($) 4 TCK, 0 TFL, 1 SCK
T. Bullard LVL ($) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
D. Dam ARI ($) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SKC
L. Thor OCO ($) 8 TCK, 0 TFL, 0 SCK
After a disappointing first week for the second overall pick, Blaster Blade had a very good showing against the Legion and hopes to keep the positive performance going. Rookie Thaddeus Bullard is making his first appearance on this list this week and is the fifth to do so this season. Normally I only include three players in the “Other Top Performers” section but, I couldn’t ignore Thor’s performance against the Hawks. While he wasn’t able to get to the quarterback or record any tackles for loss, he did provide a ton of run support for the Otters and ended the game with 8 tackles, the most of any defensive end this season.

Defensive Tackle Top Performers
B. Metas BAL ($) 5 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Burt Metas is making his first appearance on the list after finishing with 11 sacks last year. Metas made his presence felt in the backfield as he recorded both a sack and tackle for loss while also plugging up the middle and collecting 5 tackles. The Hawks take their show on the road for weeks 3 and 4 and will face the San Jose SaberCats and the Philadelphia Liberty, respectively.

V. Cox LVL ($) 4 TCK, 0 TFL, 1 SCK
Vinny Cox finished the season last year with a very respectable 7 sacks, and with his second sack in as many weeks, is on pace to shatter that number. Cox had a great game and was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise embarrassing game from the Legion, losing to the Colorado Yeti, 33-3. The Legion have a tough couple games up next, facing the Arizona Outlaws for week 3 and the Yellowknife Wraiths for week 4.

L. Pierce, A Asipi ARI ($) 2 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Pierce and Asipi posted identical stat lines in an absolute sack clinic hosted by the Outlaws defense. They each did a great job both disrupting the pocket and plugging up the running lanes. A joint performance like this really helps a team to succeed. They’ll get plenty more shots at opposing quarterbacks when they face the Legion in week 3 and the Yeti in week 4.

Other Top Performers:
B. Bot COL ($) 3 TCK, 0 TFL, 1 SCK
M. Ramrio LVL ($$) 3 TCK, 0 TFL, 1 SCK
J. Boom BAL ($) 3, 0, 1
B. Green OCO ($$) 7, 0, 0
A bot made your list!? Well, kind of. Big Bot isn’t your “normal” bot, and showed it against the Legion. I’m not sure what the rules are to having an actual android on your roster, but hey, who’s checking? Ramrio and Green both make their second appearances on the list, and waiver claim J.D. Boom makes his first appearance, while also being the third player to represent the Hawks on the list this week. Much like Thor’s performance at defensive end, I couldn’t ignore the game Green had despite not getting to the quarterback. He did a fantastic job plugging up the gut and is a huge reason for the Hawks’ running back, Darlane Farlane, averaging only 3 yards a carry.

Team Appearances After Week 2
Baltimore: 5
Las Vegas: 5
Arizona: 4
San Jose: 4
Colorado: 3
Orange County: 3
Philadelphia: 2
Yellow Knife: 1

After 2 weeks, trends my start to emerge, yet it’s still too early to refer to them as actual patterns. However there are a few things we can all agree upon. Hendrix is the real deal, and the Outlaws embarrassed the Liberty offensive line. Hendrix’s move from linebacker to defensive end may have been the best move by the Hawks this off-season. It was nice to see some veterans make their first appearance on the list and I can’t wait to see what the next 2 weeks has in store for us. My bad! If it makes you feel any better, you still made the list though. I'll double check next time.
