Today is the big day. After 16 regular season games, putting through the hard work, dedication and effort to earn themselves a bye and ticket straight into the conference championship game. After clutching out the victory in a tireless and ferocious battle, the team booked their spot in the Ultimus game of the Season 26 season. Today is the day we, The Yellowknife Wraiths, players, management and fans alike, will win the trophy.

This season was a bit of a return to form for the Yellowknife Wraiths. This was the first season since their Ultimus win that the team finished with a positive record within the regular season, as well as a spot in the playoffs.  However this season was more dominant, finishing 13-3 with a 12-0 shutout in conference games compared to their 10-6 performance in season 23. This time around, it is not the veterans of the time getting their chance at a swan song to cherish on their way, it is the new breed and future of the  team that has proven too hungry and too skilful to be beaten.  From that season 23 Ultimus winning squad, only 9 players still remain in the team this season. Many retired since they were at the end of their careers, travelling into the sunset or places unknown if you are Cooter Bigsby, whilst others sought a change of scenery and pace and found new homes within the league. (For more on Cooter Bigsby and his theorised whereabouts, read the article on page 4).

Those 9 players are predominantly defensive players. Patrik Money, James Cho and Nero Alexander are all still on the line and even for the veteran Alexander, who may only have the gas for one more season, are still extremely potent and fearsome. Both line-backers Douglas Quaid and Maurice Virtanen remain onboard, though Quaid has become the most highly rated Line-backer in the league (by TPE), Virtanen switched to feasting on pancakes to match a slower paced position with his ageing body.  Three members of the secondary unit are still  kicking around and making the small town in Canada, or wherever they may be playing, a no pass zone. Johnny Hellzapoppin, Magnus Valdyr and Mervin Leonard continue to churn out stops every drive, if not every play, catapulting Yellowknife's defence back up to the top of the charts where they used to call home so many times. Last but not least, Acura Skyline has taken on a much different role from season 23, where he backed up the legendary and easily Hall of Famer Mathias Hanyadi, he now plays both swapping between primary back and as a flex receiver. a true dual threat out there all on his own.

So, how does this team compare to the season 23 line-up? Well so far not only was their regular season better, but within the same amount of games, 16, they were able to scores more points, 462 compared to 406, and let in less points, 312 to 337, demonstrating that whilst they may be a much different squad, their surge back into the limelight and championship picture has been deserving with a squad that would be taking the field later tonight very closely rivalling being better than the  season 23 Ultimus winning team. Season 23 they took it out by beating Austin, now this time they face NOLA, arguably a better side than the S23 Copperheads, coming out with an extra regular season win, a substantially better points far traded off for a minor increase in points allowed. They are a much more experienced organisation as well, their management has been around the block a few times and knows how to get a team together for one massive performance, be prepared to see a real all out war on the field where nothing is left to chance or wonder.

So, what is the tale of the tape? Well earlier this season NOLA clutched out a win on their home turf with a touchdown in the last 8 seconds to tie the game up, with the successful extra point bringing it home. Yellowknife must feel confident that by losing that game by the skin of their teeth whilst away, that they can definitely turn that result the other way and bring home the trophy. NOLA on the other hand must stick to their guns and replicate their performance and result from that week 9 clash. They have faced once every season from and including season 23 and 26, with Yellowknife winning only 1 of these 4 clashes, though they lost 2 away games, they both won on enemy territory one time.

The teams are very evenly matched throughout their entire roster, either team can take this contest on the night, it is not a match you will want to miss out on!. The veteran core that is the defence of Yellowknife will begin making sure to keep everyone, defence or offence, cool, calm and collected out there tonight, looking to once again bring the trophy  home to Canada.  The game is sold out, if you were lucky enough to secure a ticket to the game, make sure to cheer as loud as you can to get your support behind our local heroes or otherwise, tune into APTN on channel 11to watch full game coverage live, with Yellowknife Wraith legends Nate Swift and Johnny Snuggles! No ads and every snap shown, what better way to spend the night cheering the team, the town and all of us on?

For the last time this football season, this is Noah Giard wishing the team the best of luck and singing out for the final team with my famous words.. .

“Be as cold to them like our blizzards whilst playing as hot as our women.”
