*Mapping DSFL Rivalries - Mojojojo - 02-20-2021 Mapping DSFL Rivalries So, I had a lot of fun this past offseason mapping the rivalries in the ISFL. After the results of the ISFL survey were released, I had a few people clamoring for a DSFL version. I purposefully waited to deploy this survey until well into the new season to give the newly drafted S27 rookies time to really soak up their team culture. Therefore, responses were only collected after each DSFL team had played every other team at least once (halfway through the season). Thank you to everyone who took the DSFL Rivalries survey! I had great engagement, receiving a total of 69 responses (noice)! with at least 5 responses from each of the 8 DSFL teams! The final distribution of survey responses by team are shown in the pie chart below. Respondents were recruited from each of the 8 DSFL team discord servers. The survey was open to players currently on the DSFL teams, members of team war rooms, and also former players now in the ISFL but who have strong ties to a particular DSFL team. ![]() The survey asked each respondent to specify their team and then to rank the strength of their team’s rivalry with every other DSFL team on a scale from 1-10, with 1 = “Not rivals and maybe even friends; almost always root for them against their opponent” and 10 = “Fierce rivals; want to see them go 0-14 every season.” We can then take these scores and average them across respondents within each DSFL team to identify their main rivals. We are going to use the average rather than the sum here because there are different numbers of responses (and therefore different numbers of total possible points) for different teams. The end of the survey also had an optional, open-ended box that allowed respondents to explain their rankings. I have reproduced these responses below to add flavor for the main rivalries. In general, these quotes are word-for-word what the respondents wrote (although some may be edited slightly to maintain anonymity). I have also censored any expletives. Full-disclosure, I have added some punctuation and corrected spelling and other grammar mistakes that were bothering me (sadly, I probably didn’t catch them all). The quotes *do not* reflect the opinions of the author. So let’s dive in! I’m going to start by looking team-by-team (in alphabetical order) to see how each team ranked the other teams in terms of strength of rivalry. Then I will consider head-to-head matchups across all the teams. Finally, I will look at which team is the most hated team in the DSFL and which team is most irrelevant when it comes to rivalries. Here it goes! Results by Team ![]() (n = 13)
So we start off with the Bondi Beach Buccaneers who don’t disappoint in bringing the drama. Bondi Beach had the most players complete the survey of any DSFL team and they clearly chose two top rivals: the Tijuana Luchadores and the Portland Pythons. The Dallas Birddogs come in at a close third in the rankings. From the comments, it is clear that these rivalries are fueled as much if not more by some bad blood between a few users than by team records/histories. Don't worry these are probably the most aggressively stated comments that I received from any of the teams. Quote: ![]() (n = 8)
Now we move on to the Dallas Birddogs. Now there were some fighting words coming from the Bondi Beach Buccaneers regarding Dallas, but the London Royals just edge out the Buccaneers as the top rivals. London and Dallas are the most recent expansions to the DSFL and it appears that this expansion rivalry is still going strong! In third place are the Minnesota Grey Ducks, but the other rivalries can’t compete in magnitude with those of the Royals and Buccaneers. Quote: ![]() (n = 5)
Now we turn our attention to the Kansas City Coyotes. They have a clear front-running rivalry with the Portland Pythons who lead their division. Next up are the in-conference London Royals and the out-of-conference Tijuana Luchadores. Now the Coyotes were not a talkative bunch, but it is clear that their rivalries are based much more on in-game competition than any personality clashes. Quote: ![]() (n = 10)
Fourth in alphabetical order we come to the London Royals. Here we see strong reciprocity of the expansion rivalry with the Dallas Birddogs, who score a whopping 9.1 average rivalry score out of 10. Next up are the Portland Pythons, who have been the main in-conference challenger for the Royals in the last few seasons. The Tijuana Luchadores squeak into third place with an average rivalry score only slightly above 5.0 (probably due to their recent upset of the Royals in the S25 Ultimini). Most of the other rivalries score below 5.0 points, hinting at neutral or even friendly relations. Quote: ![]() (n = 10)
Next up are the Minnesota Grey Ducks. There are a few teams that have thrown a little shade on the Grey Ducks team culture, made infamous by the choccy milk incident. But the comments from the Grey Ducks are surprisingly mild. They assign a high rivalry score with the Pythons as they battle for the top spot in the division. Another in-conference team, the London Royals, is tied with the out-of-conference Tijuana Luchadores for the second spot (just edging out the Dallas Birddogs). It seems like London’s record could have earned it a higher rivalry score but it’s players and management are just too nice. Quote: ![]() (n = 10)
And now we come to the Norfolk Seawolves. The Dallas Birddogs edge out the competition as the main rival of the Seawolves, but are followed fairly closely by another in-conference rival in the Tijuana Luchadores and an out-of-conference rival in the London Royals. While there is clearly a want to win, particularly against top teams in their division, the Seawolves don’t appear to attribute their rivalries to any particular players. Quote: ![]() (n = 8)
On to the Portland Pythons! Now we’ve read a fair number of strong comments about the Pythons from the other teams thus far; let’s see if the rivalry is reciprocated. First up there is a strong rivalry with the Bondi Beach Buccaneers. So it looks like the bad blood here is on both sides. With substantially lower scores, the next two rivals of the Pythons are two in-conference teams in the Minnesota Grey Ducks and the London Royals. But these rivalries don’t seem quite so heated or so personal as the beef with the Buccaneers; maybe more just about wanting to win their conference each year. Quote: ![]() (n = 5)
Last but not least we get to the Tijuana Luchadores. According to the Luchadores, they have two top rivals in the Portland Pythons (out-of-conference) and the Bondi Beach Buccaneers (in-conference). From the comments, it looks like the beef with the Pythons is relatively new, especially with the twin-GM link between Tonzy and RDBSouthPaw (adding some strong IRL sibling rivalry to the mix). The rivalry with the Buccaneers appears to be older, and there are clearly some deep-seeded negative feelings here. Quote: Head-to-Head Matchups Next, because the survey asked each team to rank every other team in the DSFL we have complete information to look at head-to-head matchups between teams. Here I’m trying to get a sense of where rivalries are fiercely reciprocated by both sides or where one team is really just expressing one-sided jealousy for another. With 8 teams in the DSFL, there are 28 unique head-to-head comparisons. For each pair, I took the average rivalry score that the first team gave to the second team and vice versa and added them together (SUM) and also took the absolute value of the difference (DIFF). Below are the results sorted from highest to lowest total head-to-head rivalry, with the top 4 in terms of sum highlighted in purple and the top 4 in terms of difference highlighted in green: ![]() We see that the greatest rivalry in the DSFL is the legendary expansion rivalry between the Dallas Birddogs and the London Royals. This means there are a whole lot of bragging rights riding on the 1-year anniversary exhibition match that will be streaming tonight! This is a well-rounded rivalry too, with Dallas assigning an average 8.9 rivalry score to London and London assigning an average 9.1 to Dallas (for a difference of only 0.2). The next three highest rivalries all involve the Bondi Beach Buccaneers and the Portland Pythons, Dallas Birddogs, and Tijuana Luchadores. The most lop-sided rivalry is an in-conference head-to-head between the London Royals and the Kansas City Coyotes (difference of 4.2). While Kansas City feels a strong rivalry with London (7.8 average score), London does not seem to see the team as much of a threat (assigning them only a 3.8 average rivalry score and even having friendly comments about them). The London Royals are on the receiving end of a second lop-sided rivalry with the Norfolk Seawolves (difference of 4.0); while Norfolk sees London as a top rival assigning them an average score of 7.0, London appears friendly with Norfolk assigning the out-of-conference team an average of 3.0 on the rivalry scale. Kansas City is also involved in two other fairly lop-sided rivalries with the Tijuana Luchadores (difference of 3.8) and the Portland Pythons (difference of 3.2), who again don’t seem to take the wrath of the Coyotes very seriously. Overall Now, I know everyone is dying to know which teams get ranked highly in multiple rivalries and which teams are just sort of there… To determine this, for each team I took the sum of the average rivalry scores given by the other 7 DSFL franchises. Since each team’s average rivalry score could range from 0-10 and there are 7 teams, these scores are out of a maximum possible score of 70. This allows me to rank each team according to how many other teams listed them as rivals. And here is the overall ranking:
So, perhaps unsurprisingly to many, the most hated team in the DSFL is the Portland Pythons. They are followed closely by the Dallas Birddogs, the London Royals, the Bondi Beach Buccaneers, and the Tijuana Luchadores. Looking towards the bottom of the list, we see that the Minnesota Grey Ducks and the Norfolk Seawolves just don’t seem particularly controversial, with few teams citing them as top rivals (particularly out-of-conference). And the title of “team irrelevant” goes to the Kansas City Coyotes, who appear more on the friend side of the spectrum than the rival side for most teams.
