*Ranking Every Single Quarterback Season Ever (#258-101) - Modern_Duke - 03-29-2021 Code: This was too long to fit into one post. Also its mostly stats so if I only get partial credit for word count I understand. But have I mentioned how cool and good-looking media graders are lately? What is this? Well as the title suggests, I tried to rank every season for every quarterback. Ever. I looked at four main factors - volume, efficiency, rushing, and awards. The big question was how much weight do I put onto each of those. I have always favored efficiency over volume, so that was really the main thing I looked at here, but it would be foolish to ignore big volume stats. Rushing stats aren't a big factor for many QBs, but of course I wanted to give appropriate consideration to impressive rushing stats too. As for awards, there is some redundancy involved with considering them (the winner of Quarterback of the Year will inherently have had a good year, and giving them separate credit for winning the award is basically double counting their success), but I felt there was value to looking at them, as they give good context for comparing against peers. So the awards I looked at were pro bowl, quarterback of the year, offensive player of the year, most valuable player, and Ultimus champion. I know, winning the Ultimus isn't an actual award, and also speaks more to the strength of the team overall more than just the QB. But let's be realistic, championships drive the conversation for NFL QBs too. Just look at Eli Manning and Joe Flacco. Or Tom Brady for that matter. Minimums - Through Season 27, 269 players recorded individual season stats in the index. However, from S1-S4 a few players received just minimal playing time, including defensive end Jayce Tuck who somehow got 1 pass attempt in S4. So just to keep everything a bit cleaner, I only included the 258 players with over 100 pass attempts in a season. ([Number]) - The number in parentheses represents the all-time single season ranking of that particular stat. If there is also a 1 in the parentheses, that indicates that they lead the league in that particular season. So to summarize, S22 Franky LaFleur's 704 Yards (258) means that was the 258th most yards all time. S17 Andrew Reese's 4210 Yards (1/70) mean that was the 70th most yards all time, but lead the league that season. S5 Mike Boss's 5545 Yards (1/1) means that he had the most yards all time, and obviously lead the league that season as well. AY/A - Adjusted Yards Per Attempt, a measure of efficiency, it tracks similarly to QB rating and is easier to calculate. Formula is (Yards + 20 x Touchdowns - 45 x Interceptions) / Attempts Rating+ and AY/A+ - Looks at efficiency compared to league. Most commonly used in baseball (OPS+), basically its just calculated as ([player stat]/[league average stat] x 100). Useful in comparing players from different eras with different metas. For example, take S1 Ethan Hunt's 75.9 QB Rating and S5 Chris Orosz's 87.7 Rating. On the surface Orosz clearly had the better season, but S1 league average rating was 72.3 and S5 league average rating was 89.5. So Hunt was actually an above average QB (104.9 Rating+ or 4.9% better than average), while Orosz was below average (98.0 Rating+ or 2.0% worse than average). ® and © - Thats just how rookie and captain tags paste from the index. I wasn't about to try to clean all that up Without further ado.. ----- 258. LaFleur, F., S22 Chicago Butchers 68/158 704 Yards (258), 43.0% Comp Pct. (258), 0 TD (260), 10 Int, 30.1 Rating (258), 1.61 AY/A (258) 3 Rush Yards (239), 0 Rush TD (123) 37.9 Rating+ (258), 25.4 AY/A+ (258) Ah the immmortal Franky LaFleur, the stopgap 50 TPE QB that Chicago used for half a season after trading away Rose Jenkins, is easily the worst QB ever. LaFleur finishes last in basically every category. Notice that he has the 260th most touchdowns in this list of 258 QBs? Even the 2 players that got disqualified for too few attempts had more TDs than LaFleur's 0 in 158 attempts. 257. Pierno, N., S3 Colorado Yeti 181/372 2209 Yards (249), 48.7% Comp Pct. (253), 8 TD (246), 35 Int, 35.3 Rating (257), 2.13 AY/A (257) 78 Rush Yards (119), 0 Rush TD (123) 45.5 Rating+ (257), 34.5 AY/A+ (257) I didn't rank most or least interceptions (I honestly forget why, but I'm not going back to redo it now), but Pierno's 35 are the most in a single season. Remarkably, almost 1 in 10 passing attempts resulted in an interception. 256. Noble, L., S10 Philadelphia Liberty 155/356 1551 Yards (255), 43.5% Comp Pct. (257), 1 TD (258), 13 Int, 42.2 Rating (256), 2.77 AY/A (256) 16 Rush Yards (217), 0 Rush TD (123) 51.1 Rating+ (256), 41.8 AY/A+ (256) What's more impressively bad, LaFleur's 0 touchdowns in 158 attempts or 1 touchdown in 356 attempts? Also I didn't rank this, but Noble's 4.36 yards per attempt are I think the lowest ever. He would be lower if not for the kind of impressive avoidance of interceptions. 255. ® Applehort, R., S7 Colorado Yeti 231/482 2430 Yards (242), 47.9% Comp Pct. (255), 4 TD (254), 21 Int, 47.6 Rating (255), 3.25 AY/A (254) -38 Rush Yards (269), 1 Rush TD (62) 58.6 Rating+ (254), 47.9 AY/A+ (253) In Applehort's defense, he was a rookie. I don't have a defense for the Yeti making him throw 482 times. Also, his -38 rushing yards are the worst ever, but I like that he still managed to get a rushing touchdown. 254. ® Pennington, B., S8 San Jose Sabercats 304/561 3058 Yards (205), 54.2% Comp Pct. (228), 7 TD (248), 31 Int, 51.1 Rating (253), 3.21 AY/A (255) 0 Rush Yards (244), 0 Rush TD (123) 58.5 Rating+ (255), 45.8 AY/A+ (255) Here we have the second most interceptions ever, and only the second with over 30. But at least it took him 561 attempts to get there. Like I asked about the Yeti and S8 Applehort, why were the the Sabercats making this rookie throw so much? 253. Pierno, N., S4 Colorado Yeti 218/418 2466 Yards (241), 52.2% Comp Pct. (245), 7 TD (248), 25 Int, 50.8 Rating (254), 3.54 AY/A (252) 113 Rush Yards (90), 0 Rush TD (123) 64.1 Rating+ (252), 57.4 AY/A+ (250) Pierno rebounds from his 35 interception rookie season with a much, uh, better 25 interceptions. 252. Pierno, N., S5 Colorado Yeti 199/343 1957 Yards (252), 58.0% Comp Pct. (112), 4 TD (254), 19 Int, 55.0 Rating (250), 3.45 AY/A (253) 348 Rush Yards (1/36), 1 Rush TD (62) 61.5 Rating+ (253), 46.8 AY/A+ (254) Pierno rebounds from his 25 interception second season wtih a much, uh better 4-19 TD-Int ratio. To Pierno's credit, the completion percentatage is actually pretty good here, and he lead the S5 QBs in rushing yards. 251. Noble, L., S9 Philadelphia Liberty 245/521 2567 Yards (236), 47.0% Comp Pct. (256), 5 TD (253), 16 Int, 52.2 Rating (252), 3.74 AY/A (250) -1 Rush Yards (256), 0 Rush TD (123) 64.6 Rating+ (251), 58.4 AY/A+ (249) It's amazing that Philly saw this season from Noble, and decided in S10 "yes, that's still our guy". 250. Cole ®, E., S16 Austin Copperheads 217/416 2351 Yards (245), 52.2% Comp Pct. (244), 9 TD (242), 21 Int, 55.3 Rating (249), 3.81 AY/A (249) 16 Rush Yards (217), 0 Rush TD (123) 66.7 Rating+ (250), 56.5 AY/A+ (252) Cole had a nice career, but didn't get off to the greatest start, with tied for the 9th most interceptions ever. 249. Bercovici, J., S2 Las Vegas Legion 239/497 2508 Yards (238), 48.1% Comp Pct. (254), 16 TD (203), 23 Int, 54.6 Rating (251), 3.61 AY/A (251) 13 Rush Yards (222), 0 Rush TD (123) 74.2 Rating+ (247), 65.5 AY/A+ (246) The touchdowns are decent, but the sub-50% completion percentage and a whole bunch of interceptions drag this season down. 248. Wright, D., S18 San Jose Sabercats 188/385 1996 Yards (250), 48.8% Comp Pct. (252), 9 TD (242), 15 Int, 55.9 Rating (248), 3.90 AY/A (248) 308 Rush Yards (46), 3 Rush TD (23) 67.1 Rating+ (249), 57.3 AY/A+ (251) I remember Dan Wright always having awful sim luck. At least he kept the interceptions down, but everything else here leaves a lot be desired. 247. McDummy ®, W., S16 Colorado Yeti 249/467 2655 Yards (232), 53.3% Comp Pct. (238), 11 TD (234), 21 Int, 59.3 Rating (247), 4.13 AY/A (247) 27 Rush Yards (195), 0 Rush TD (123) 71.5 Rating+ (248), 61.3 AY/A+ (247) McDummy outdoes Cole in their rookie seasons completing a few more passes for a few more yards and a few more TDs. 246. ® Christ, J., S11 San Jose Sabercats 272/476 2851 Yards (218), 57.1% Comp Pct. (140), 10 TD (237), 19 Int, 65.0 Rating (242), 4.61 AY/A (242) 26 Rush Yards (198), 1 Rush TD (62) 79.2 Rating+ (244), 72.7 AY/A+ (241) Another rookie asked to do a lot. At least the completion percentage was decent. 245. McDummy, W., S17 Colorado Yeti 230/423 2267 Yards (248), 54.4% Comp Pct. (226), 7 TD (248), 11 Int, 64.4 Rating (244), 4.52 AY/A (243) 26 Rush Yards (198), 0 Rush TD (123) 77.7 Rating+ (245), 68.2 AY/A+ (243) It's somewhere around here (or maybe a few spots ago) where we transition from "embarassingly bad" to just "bad". Wolfie really reduced his interceptions in his second season, but didn't do much to improve otherwise. 244. ® Fitzpatrick, K., S9 Arizona Outlaws 283/492 2822 Yards (219), 57.5% Comp Pct. (126), 14 TD (217), 22 Int, 64.8 Rating (243), 4.29 AY/A (245) 70 Rush Yards (127), 0 Rush TD (123) 80.2 Rating+ (242), 67.1 AY/A+ (245) 8th most interceptions ever brings this one down. 243. Pierno, N., S6 Colorado Yeti 203/369 1955 Yards (253), 55.0% Comp Pct. (206), 10 TD (237), 13 Int, 64.4 Rating (244), 4.25 AY/A (246) 588 Rush Yards (13), 2 Rush TD (36) 74.6 Rating+ (246), 60.2 AY/A+ (248) Pierno finally learns how to cut down on interceptions, and throws in a great rushing season to boot. 242. Reese, A., S14 Arizona Outlaws 284/517 2727 Yards (226), 54.9% Comp Pct. (210), 16 TD (203), 12 Int, 70.5 Rating (227), 4.85 AY/A (237) 54 Rush Yards (149), 0 Rush TD (123) 80.8 Rating+ (241), 67.5 AY/A+ (244) The first QB on the list with a TD-Int ratio over 1.00. However, S14 was a really good season for QBs, so Reese doesn't look too good against his peers. 241. Wright, D., S19 San Jose Sabercats 211/410 2372 Yards (244), 51.5% Comp Pct. (249), 12 TD (232), 13 Int, 65.6 Rating (241), 4.94 AY/A (236) 531 Rush Yards (20), 1 Rush TD (62) 79.2 Rating+ (243), 73.6 AY/A+ (239) Passing numbers are entirely unimpressive, but a good amount of rushing yards. 240. ® Falconi, A., S11 Philadelphia Liberty 291/527 2977 Yards (209), 55.2% Comp Pct. (199), 17 TD (196), 19 Int, 67.4 Rating (238), 4.67 AY/A (240) 50 Rush Yards (159), 1 Rush TD (62) 82.1 Rating+ (240), 73.6 AY/A+ (240) Most touchdowns at this point in the list, but nothing else to write home about here. 239. Jack ®, "., S23 San Jose Sabercats 246/439 2715 Yards (227), 56.0% Comp Pct. (174), 9 TD (242), 15 Int, 67.1 Rating (240), 5.06 AY/A (234) 41 Rush Yards (169), 0 Rush TD (123) 85.3 Rating+ (236), 80.7 AY/A+ (233) This is a situation where Jack's numbers may not look great, but S23 was actually the worst league passing season since S3, so Monty looks better by comparison. 238. Pennington, B., S9 San Jose Sabercats 312/525 2889 Yards (215), 59.4% Comp Pct. (68), 13 TD (224), 18 Int, 68.5 Rating (233), 4.46 AY/A (244) 27 Rush Yards (195), 1 Rush TD (62) 84.7 Rating+ (238), 69.6 AY/A+ (242) TD-Int ratio is bad, but good completion percentage and decent volume. 237. Vega, Z., S22 Sarasota Sailfish 130/229 1509 Yards (256), 56.8% Comp Pct. (153), 4 TD (254), 8 Int, 68.1 Rating (236), 5.37 AY/A (228) -3 Rush Yards (261), 0 Rush TD (123) 85.8 Rating+ (234), 84.7 AY/A+ (224) Vega played a partial season for expansion Sarasota before they acquired Rose Jenkins, and played semi-efficiently other than an odd avoidance of touchdowns. 236. Christ, J., S1 San Jose Sabercats 153/292 1670 Yards (254), 52.4% Comp Pct. (242), 7 TD (248), 10 Int, 63.3 Rating (246), 4.66 AY/A (241) 10 Rush Yards (227), 0 Rush TD (123) 87.5 Rating+ (224), 86.4 AY/A+ (218) Numbers don't look great, but S1 was a dreadful season for QBs. 235. Applehort, R., S8 Colorado Yeti 331/570 3565 Yards (146), 58.1% Comp Pct. (111), 13 TD (224), 14 Int, 73.9 Rating (215), 5.61 AY/A (220) 41 Rush Yards (169), 1 Rush TD (62) 84.6 Rating+ (239), 79.9 AY/A+ (234) Would have been much higher if he just threw more touchdowns. 234. Kaepercolin, N., S25 Berlin Fire Salamanders 300/528 3213 Yards (187), 56.8% Comp Pct. (150), 21 TD (135), 21 Int, 71.5 Rating (224), 5.09 AY/A (232) 309 Rush Yards (45), 2 Rush TD (36) 85.2 Rating+ (237), 73.7 AY/A+ (238) Would have been much higher if he just threw fewer interceptions. 233. Rove, C., S4 Philadelphia Liberty 326/558 3682 Yards (125), 58.4% Comp Pct. (96), 16 TD (203), 26 Int, 68.4 Rating (234), 5.08 AY/A (233) 7 Rush Yards (232), 0 Rush TD (123) 86.3 Rating+ (231), 82.2 AY/A+ (231) Speaking of interceptions, here we have the third most interceptions ever. 232. Phoenix, B., S21 Philadelphia Liberty 233/435 2914 Yards (214), 53.6% Comp Pct. (235), 15 TD (207), 10 Int, 76.5 Rating (204), 6.35 AY/A (162) 36 Rush Yards (179), 0 Rush TD (123) 85.7 Rating+ (235), 84.2 AY/A+ (225) Man, what a completely non-spectacular season. I already regret committing to making comments for each player. 231. Bercovici, J., S3 Las Vegas Legion 260/477 3169 Yards (197), 54.5% Comp Pct. (222), 14 TD (217), 20 Int, 67.5 Rating (237), 5.34 AY/A (229) 9 Rush Yards (230), 0 Rush TD (123) 87.1 Rating+ (227), 86.3 AY/A+ (219) Bercovici certainly wasn't shy with the interceptions, as one of the few with multiple seasons with 20 or more. 230. Fujiwara ®, C., S22 Baltimore Hawks 204/371 1979 Yards (251), 55.0% Comp Pct. (207), 9 TD (242), 7 Int, 70.4 Rating (228), 4.97 AY/A (235) 51 Rush Yards (156), 0 Rush TD (123) 88.7 Rating+ (219), 78.5 AY/A+ (235) Low output all around. Only 9 touchdowns in a full season is kind of impressive. 229. Jenkins, R., S22 Sarasota Sailfish 253/479 3140 Yards (199), 52.8% Comp Pct. (241), 10 TD (237), 13 Int, 69.1 Rating (232), 5.75 AY/A (213) 71 Rush Yards (126), 0 Rush TD (123) 87.1 Rating+ (226), 90.8 AY/A+ (198) These are the full season numbers for Rose, who was traded from Chicago to expansion Sarasota halfway through the season, which resulted in us witnessing the Franky LaFleur experience. 228. Jenkins, R., S19 Chicago Butchers 326/578 3716 Yards (120), 56.4% Comp Pct. (164), 11 TD (234), 15 Int, 71.4 Rating (225), 5.64 AY/A (217) 59 Rush Yards (142), 0 Rush TD (123) 86.2 Rating+ (232), 84.0 AY/A+ (227) Jenkins lead the league in attempts in S19, but managed to throw the fewest touchdowns in S19. Not a great combination. 227. O'Donnell ®, G., S23 Chicago Butchers 275/504 3083 Yards (202), 54.6% Comp Pct. (220), 10 TD (237), 12 Int, 69.7 Rating (231), 5.44 AY/A (225) 118 Rush Yards (88), 0 Rush TD (123) 88.6 Rating+ (220), 86.9 AY/A+ (216) Not atrotious for a rookie, considering S23 was a bad season for QBs. 226. Rove, C., S3 Philadelphia Liberty 286/514 3461 Yards (159), 55.6% Comp Pct. (188), 20 TD (156), 24 Int, 70.0 Rating (230), 5.41 AY/A (227) 1 Rush Yards (242), 1 Rush TD (1/62) 90.3 Rating+ (213), 87.4 AY/A+ (214) Nothing that bad here, except for the fifth most interceptions ever. 225. Maximus III, B., S15 New Orleans Second Line 262/486 2972 Yards (210), 53.9% Comp Pct. (231), 17 TD (196), 15 Int, 71.3 Rating (226), 5.43 AY/A (226) 81 Rush Yards (115), 2 Rush TD (36) 86.6 Rating+ (229), 82.7 AY/A+ (230) Another one of those unspectacular seasons that I don't have much to say about. 224. Wright, D., S21 San Jose Sabercats 227/410 2715 Yards (227), 55.4% Comp Pct. (194), 10 TD (237), 7 Int, 76.8 Rating (199), 6.34 AY/A (165) 140 Rush Yards (76), 1 Rush TD (62) 86.1 Rating+ (233), 84.1 AY/A+ (226) Another one that's decent enough except for a weirdly low number of touchdowns. 223. Maximus III, B., S6 New Orleans Second Line 323/555 3462 Yards (158), 58.2% Comp Pct. (104), 18 TD (177), 17 Int, 74.6 Rating (212), 5.51 AY/A (224) 45 Rush Yards (165), 1 Rush TD (62) 86.5 Rating+ (230), 77.9 AY/A+ (236) Young Borkus is similar to old Borkus (see above) with a bit more volume. 222. McCormick, M., S15 Colorado Yeti 299/524 3429 Yards (163), 57.1% Comp Pct. (141), 20 TD (156), 20 Int, 73.7 Rating (217), 5.59 AY/A (221) 43 Rush Yards (166), 1 Rush TD (62) 89.5 Rating+ (215), 85.2 AY/A+ (223) Basically identical to the Akselsen season below. 221. Akselsen, M., S10 San Jose Sabercats 312/547 3570 Yards (145), 57.0% Comp Pct. (142), 19 TD (172), 19 Int, 73.9 Rating (215), 5.66 AY/A (216) 129 Rush Yards (81), 1 Rush TD (62) 89.5 Rating+ (216), 85.5 AY/A+ (221) Basically identical to the McCormick season above. 220. Noble, L., S5 Las Vegas Legion 362/577 3792 Yards (117), 62.7% Comp Pct. (1/18), 20 TD (156), 21 Int, 78.1 Rating (186), 5.63 AY/A (219) 58 Rush Yards (145), 0 Rush TD (123) 87.3 Rating+ (225), 76.3 AY/A+ (237) I explained it at the start, but that (1/18) for completion percentage means Noble's 62.7% lead the league in S5, and is the 18th best all time. And actually before S27 it would have been top 10. 219. Fujiwara, C., S24 Baltimore Hawks 259/501 3414 Yards (166), 51.7% Comp Pct. (248), 22 TD (127), 17 Int, 74.1 Rating (213), 6.17 AY/A (187) 113 Rush Yards (90), 0 Rush TD (123) 88.4 Rating+ (222), 89.0 AY/A+ (204) Seems like a high risk, high reward for Chika. Good amount of touchdowns and yards per attempt, bad completion percentage and interceptions. 218. Orosz, C., S7 San Jose Sabercats 299/573 3779 Yards (119), 52.2% Comp Pct. (243), 15 TD (207), 14 Int, 71.6 Rating (223), 6.02 AY/A (200) 15 Rush Yards (219), 0 Rush TD (123) 88.2 Rating+ (223), 88.9 AY/A+ (207) 14 interceptions in 573 attempts, but unfortunately had trouble completing passes to his own players as well. 217. Stone, W., S4 Las Vegas Legion 229/394 2319 Yards (247), 58.1% Comp Pct. (108), 13 TD (224), 12 Int, 73.4 Rating (219), 5.18 AY/A (231) -23 Rush Yards (268), 0 Rush TD (123) 92.6 Rating+ (201), 83.8 AY/A+ (229) Stone wasn't asked to do much, and it makes sense the Legion would have wanted that after back to back 20+ interception seasons in S2 and S3. 216. Havran, C., S23 Honolulu Hahalua 268/492 2947 Yards (211), 54.5% Comp Pct. Top 30 all time in yards and completion percentage, ok enough rating...so whats the deal? Well this is why I'm considering the era. S27 basically has a completely different meta compared to old sim seasons. S27 has the highest league average QB rating, and by far the highest league average completion percentage ever. So look beneath the surface on these numbers, and you'll see that Daytona was tied for 12th in touchdowns, 12th in completion percentage, and last in rating. 210. Boss, M., S1 Orange County Otters 210/352 2334 Yards (246), 59.7% Comp Pct. Daytona had literally double the yards that Boss had and was better in every single other category. But Boss ranks above him because he did better against his peers, including leading the league in completion percentage. 209. Howitzer, S., S27 New York Silverbacks 400/609 4047 Yards (86), 65.7% Comp Pct. This resulted in me telling a few people that I was spending too much time on league stuff and was maybe going IA for a bit, which probably affected my draft position in retrospect. Oh well. Then I put this media aside for like a month. So for my own sake I'm gonna take a break from commenting on every single season, and just offering thoughts where I actually have some. 205. Hunt I think was traded midseason and eventually split time with Jameis Christ. The volume is comically low, but he technically finished third in rating and made the pro bowl. But also something I didn't think of until just now, making the pro bowl was a lot easier when there were 6 teams vs. when there are 14 teams. Oh well, I'm not reanalyzing everything now. 139. To be fair Armstrong wasn't that bad, and he was a rookie, but this is a very run of the mill season. Also weird to see an Armstrong season with no rushing stats." While that may be true, I'm confident Armstrong had one of the best playoff runs in ISFL history. 800 total yards, 8 TDs, 0 turnovers plus a 4 TD game in the Ultimus. And yeah no rushing stats cause I was a rookie ![]() |
