Orange County Otters at Philadelphia Liberty

Rather than doing a longwinded breakdown that nobody has the time to read I'm going to try a different approach. While it may not bring me as much in the way of payment, I hope it will lead to more people actually reading it.

The final score was 13-3, which a lot of people could have predicted was going to happen. The game was not particularly one of those edge of your seat watches. The first quarter the Otters took a 10-0 lead and pretty much never looked back. Second quarter was scoreless and in the third the Otters padded their lead with a field goal. Philadelphia finally got on the board with a field goal in the 4th but it was all they could muster.

Instead I'm going to focus more on how various players did.

First, I'm going to look at the QB play.

Mike Boss had a very typical game for Boss. He's known for being a long arm guy with a propensity to throw an interception or two per game. This game was no different. He threw for 255 yards and 1 TD, and his usual 2 interceptions. It's frustrating to see because he can not figure out for the life of him why the interceptions keep coming. He has a 54% completion percentage which isn't terrible by any means.

Jameis Christ had a lousy game. He threw a good amount, 40 times with a 55% completion percentage and a solid 227 yards. But no scores and 2 interceptions hurts his QBR. If he can cut back on the mistakes, he can be a huge reason the Liberty win games moving forward.

The running game was rather pedestrian on both sides of the ball. Jenkins and Bowers have been getting less carries recently, and when they do get it, it has been lackluster. Vick averaged a meager 1.5 yards per carry. Jenkins was better with 2.5 but not what you want out of your workhorse backs. Jenkins led the Otters with 27 yards out of the backfield.

The Liberty had a much better day running. But playing from behind all game didn't give Omar Wright the carries he deserved. When he got the rock, he earned his yards and produced. Averaging 3.7 yards per carry, he ran a total of 52 yards on 14 attempts. Change of pace back Michael Newman got 2 carries for 5 yards. Maybe if the Liberty had leaned a bit more on Wright they'd have converted some 3rd downs.

The Otters main WRs had a great day against the Liberty secondary. Bradley Westfield led the team with 110 yards on 5 receptions. Robert Phelps feasted too with a solid 103 yards on 6 receptions. But the damage on the scoreboard was done by the Otters TE, George Wright Jr. He only had 32 yards on 8 receptions, but one of those was for a TD in the first quarter.

The Liberty WRs had a quality day on the stat sheet. Damien Kroetch led his team with 98 yards on 6 receptions. Fox North had an okay day with 60 yards on 5 receptions, but he also was penalized 3 times for 25 yards, so his day was quite undisciplined. Hunter Mason and Paul DiMirio both added 25 yards to the stat sheet.

A lot of this game's low score was a result of the defenses. The Otters had a great game on defense. Ian Bavitz lit up the scoreboard with 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Franklin Harris added 5 tackles and a sack. Big Ragnar Kronen didn't get any sacks but he got a pass deflection and an interception on top of his 3 tackles. JJ Reigns made his presence felt with 2 tackles and 2 huge sacks. The secondary for the Otters was decent. Marc Spector defended 2 passes and took down 6 players for a tackle. Petrakis had 5 tackles and 3 passes defended. But it was Safety Dominic Verns who stood out in the backfield for Orange County with 6 tackles, 1 sack, 2 passes defended and an interception.

Philadelphia sealed their defense well after the first quarter. Perry Tucker was a nightmare out there, taking down people left and right. he finished the day with an insane 12 tackles and a sack. Drew Davidson, Lincoln Jefferson and Vikian Marmeladov all took down QB Boss once in the contest as well. Highlights of the Liberty secondary were Tyler Oles, picking up his second interception of the season and fellow rookie Kristoffer O'Sullivan brought in his first interception of the season on top of 7 tackles.

Overall, the game wasn't an exciting nail biter but it was a good contest.

MVPs:

Offense:
Bradley Westfield - 5 catches 110 yards with a long of 34.
Omar Wright - 14 attempts for 52 yards.

Defense:
Dominic Verns - 6 Tackles, 1 Sack, 2 Pass Defensed, 1 Interception
Perry Tucker - 12 tackles, 1 Sack

Another look at the stats shows other things about this game that might be telling. The Liberty were 0 for 12 on third down. This was likely one of the main contributors to their failure this evening. When you're limiting yourself to two downs to get yards, you're handicapping yourself. Orange County was not much better with a 2 for 15 ratio, but it should also note that they were also 1 for 1 on 4th down scenarios while the Liberty failed their only 4th down attempt.

Time of possession was in favor of the Otters, 31:00 to 29:00, how very even. This was expected though because the Otters converted for more first downs overall than the Liberty were able to. Orange County tallied 12 first downs all game while the Liberty only got 10.

Lastly, the kicking game was also in favor of the Otters tonight. Langdon was 2 for 2 and nailed his extra point and Harris was only 1 for 2 on his field goal attempts. Harris had a slight edge in the punting game, having 2 stay inside the 20 even though he had 6 less yards punting than Langdon.
