*Prospect Bowl QB Breakdown - Dp-420 - 05-21-2021 So how many of you watched the Prospects Bowl games before the DSFL draft? Rhetorical, as I know EVERYONE tuned in and watched the young guns of the future face off against one another. In these games each team had 2 QB’s each. For the most part the playing time on each team was pretty close to 50/50 for each QB. Except for one team that seen more of a 67.5-33.5 split. The Edinburgh Gallowglass had QB’s Sal Shaw and Mason Malone. The Calumet Wolverines had Dustin Parmelee and Ricky Stanzi. The Oahu Nightmarchers had Jack R and Matt Holford. What Im going to do today, is present you guys with the statistical outcomes of the QB’s (overall, not individual games) and then rank them 1-6, in my eyes, based off their statistics. That might seem unfair, as one QB seen a lot less playing time than his counterpart, however the team did play better when the guy who seen the field less was actually playing. So lets just get into this. I will first break down individually by team, and a brief little something about their stats/performances. The first teams’ QB’s we will take a look at will be the QB’s on Edinburgh Gallowglass. That would be #4 overall draft pick Mason Malone and 7th Round pick of the Seawolves Sal Shaw. Mason Malone 24-69 34.8% 379-YDS 3-TD 1-INT 5.49YPA Mason Malone had a pretty good showing at he prospect bowl games. With the exception of his completion percentage, he beat or tied Dustin Parmelee, who I think is the QB who had the best overall performance. He had more yards, tied in both touchdowns and interceptions and his yards per attempt were slightly better by .22 yards! His completion percentage however was significantly less than the best. He did prove why he was deserving of the 4th overall pick. Good job my man. Sal Shaw 29-58 50% 345-YDS 1-TD 1-INT 5.33 YPA Sal Shaw had a great showing as well. This kid showed high accuracy in every game but one going 7-14, 7-14, 6-9 and 9-21 in the games he played. He finished with the 3rd highest completion percentage at exactly 50%. He also was 3rd in yards passing with 345, and yard per attempt with 5.94 yards. He continued to show his accuracy with only throwing 1 interception. The only number I’m shocked to see down is touchdown passes. This doesn’t take away from what this kid was able to do at the games, and really should have propelled him a lot higher than an early 7th round pick. However, Tom Brady was a 7th round pick, so you know this kid is going to play with a similar chip on his shoulder. The next team we will be looking at is the Calumet Wolverines. They featured first round pick of the Royal, Dustin Parmelee and 2nd round pick of Dallas Ricky Stanzi. Ricky Stanzi - 56-111 50.5% 745-YDS 2-TD 7-INT 6.71-YPA Ricky was selected 10th overall, in the 2nd round by the Dallas Birddogs. He was the third QB off the board. This is the player I was telling you about. Was his Dad coaching the Wolverines? This guy got twice as much playing time as the other QB on the team did. But was it warranted? Ricky threw multiple interceptions in every game but one. He also had a game where he threw for 261 yards (46.2 completion percentage, 1-TD, 2-INT) in a game that seen him pass the ball 39 times, completing 18 of them, including 2 in the hands of the defense. Ricky had the most completions, the most attempts, the most yards and the most interceptions, Ricky also was 3rd in TD passes with 2 during the prospect bowl games. He also yielded the highest Yards Per Attempt. Ricky was able to showcase his abilities with plenty of work in the games. However, Calumet went win-less in all the games they played. But in all seriousness, he led everyone in 5 of the categories and was 2nd in a 6th. I see the potential in this kid, but next time tell your dad to let the better QB play. Dustin Parmelee 28-52 53.8% 274-YDS 3-TD 1-INT 5.27YPA Dustin Parmelee was selected in the first round, 8th overall by the London Royal. It was tough watching the prospect bowl games because he was barely in most of the games, and when he was in, it seemed like all he did was hand off to the running backs. I did notice that when he was in the game, the offense seemed to move the ball down the field with for efficiency. Dustin was tied with the lead for most TD’s and Tied for least amount of interceptions. He also had the highest completion percentage. I think if he would have gotten at least half of the pass attempts (an additional 29-30 passes) you could have seen more impressive numbers than what you seen here. Still, He barely turned the ball over, and lead his team to the endzone 1 more time than Ricky did, who once again had 59 more passing attempts than Parmelee. Excellent showing for the Royal rookie. I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him. Then finally the last team we will feature in this piece is the Oahu Nightmarchers. They had a pair of QB’s that are quick on their feet with undrafted Matthew Holford and London 6th round pick Jack R. Matthew Holford 24-63 38.1% 212-YDS 0-TD 3-INT 3.37-YPA & Rushing 103-YDS 2-TD Matt showed a very inaccurate arm and if you take away one game where he rushed for 92 yards and a td, his numbers are just down right ugly. This kid probably didn’t help his draft potentially with the showings he had during the showcase. He did show an above average foot speed. Matthew is going to have to kick his game up a notch if he wants to be a successful Quarterback. Jack R. 18-48 37.5% 256-YDS 1-TD 1-INT 5.33-YPA & rushing 169-YDS 1-TD This kid seemed to be a surprise pick for most everybody outside of the London Locker Room. But when you think about it Jack R is the complete opposite of Dustin Parmelee. Sort of like a Drew Brees and Taysom Hill situation. One kid can fly like the wind and has a pretty good arm to boot. The other isn’t very light on his feet at all but will throw bullets all over the field, in all different angles and release points from the pocket. Jack R showed a little inaccuracy at the Prospect Bowl games, finishing with the 2nd worst completion percentage. His Yards per attempt was also 5th best. As did his touchdown passes but he did throw more than Holford did. His yards passing, also 5th best. But you must remember a big part of this kids game is his legs and he ran for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns on 2 rushes in one game! So there are your statistical breakdowns coming from the box scores. I didn’t sit there and watch all the games and keep Talley. I did however watch every game. Just not like a statistician would. How would you rank them 1 through 6? What do you value the most from your QB? My list would look like this. 1. Dustin Parmelee 2. Mason Malone 3. Ricky Stanzi 4. Jack R 5. Sal Shaw 6. Matthew Holford I had Mason Malone 2nd because his completion percentage. If it was maybe 45%, he would have walked away with the highest honor. Stanzi comes in 3rd as he had the 3rd most passing touch downs and the most yards, but also had more than twice as many interceptions as any other QB in the showcase. Jack R I put in 4th because of the lethality of his legs. He could have a bad game passing and makes up for it with one quick run as you seen in the game vs Calumet. Sal Shaw had a good performance but he only threw one TD so he comes in 5th. Last place is Matthew Holford and his numbers speak for themselves. Id Love to hear your feed back with your list and reasoning if you would like. No answer is wrong, its our own opinion! I'm curious to see what other's think, and value. I value pocket passing most, but that doesn’t negate the effect of a scrambling QB. They are all effective in their own ways. Except Ricky. I think his Papa had a hand in on all that playing time he had. (HAHA just kidding Stanzi!!!) |
