*Personality vs TPE - Beck - 07-01-2021

The draft is upcoming, and is a favorite time of year for me. I love all drafts except for military ones. In real life whether it is the National Football League Draft or National Basketball Association’s draft, I get pumped. Being a huge Chicago Bears fan, I am generally left really disappointed after drafts. I try doing a lot of research on players and then just hope for the best. The International Sim Football League Draft is no different. I recently was given the green light to become a scout for the greatest team in Developmental Simulation Football League history, the Norfolk Sea Wolves. Shout out to Negs for being the GOAT and letting me get started with this. This has been a fun task that hopefully I will continue to grow in as time passes.  I’ve now scouted a handful of people and my eyes have been opened quite a bit.

It is great to talk with these people and have fun conversations with them. To me – getting started was the worst part so I am trying to help them out. Whether I am being scouted or doing the scouting, two questions have come up quite a bite. One is where would you rank yourself in terms of earning TPE, and the other is to just describe your personality. This all got me to thinking, which is more important for teams and General managers? TPE is obviously important for games, but what if the person has a bad personality and sucks in the locker room? So that is what this article is going to be about. Not my opinion on which is more important, but more so just laying out the benefits to each. I know a lot more goes into scouting and selections than just these two things, but in my limited experience, I am guessing these are two of the most important characteristics for any prospect regardless of they are eligible for the Developmental Simulation Football League, or the International Simulation Football League.

Personality:
Personality is important as mentioned above. But similar to a relationship – are you willing to sacrifice the goods in favor of nice personality? I am sure that this is a dilemma that many general managers face. One constant theme in my discussions with teams have been establishing a culture. This may consist of  culture of winners. A general manager might want everyone to be focused on winning at all costs. I will touch on this more in the TPE Earner section below. Locker Rooms are important. Whether it is side games people are playing or going through a crappy season and everyone being positive and having each other’s backs (Norfolk ). From personal experience I can see the importance in having a good group in the locker room personality wise. As a General manager would you sacrifice potential on field production and wins in favor of a good groups in the locker rooms? I think most would do this. But The issue becomes how many low/ mid earners could you have on one team before the reward of having a positive locker room becomes the detriment to ever really winning? I don’t think there is a formula for this but I would say that you need some sort of good balance and have to be very aware of it all when it comes to drafting.

TPE Earner:

Having top TPE earners means that your team’s on field production should be pretty high. Even if you have a younger team, if they’re full of top TPE earners then you will see tons of progression through the season. But at the end of the day, locker rooms and the various channels add tons and tons of fun to this game. With that in mind, could a team focus solely on TPE and not care about personality? I’m not sure this is the case for sustained success. It might make over night success something that happens but if there if a locker room was toxic you’d have to think that would lead to drama and things going south. On the other hand, one could say – who cares if I do not like my team. There are plenty of open channels with other International Simulation Football Members that one could easily talk to and engage. There are also additions like twitter and the threads that allow you to connect with others. So winning in this scenario could possibly provide the best of both worlds for someone. 

With all this in mind, I am glad I can sit and watch how different General Managers and scout teams opt to build their teams. There are obviously tons of more layers between the two options I listed above so things are not as simple as I kind of wrote them out. So far in scouting for Developmental Football League Players, I have found a couple players that would fit in one or the other above category, and a few that would fit in both. It will be fun to follow them over the next few seasons and see how everyone does. How a person/prospect fits on a team is probably always key in any evaluation. I am probably thinking about this too deeply at this point, but it also makes me wonder if people are active for longer or shorter periods of time based on their goals and where they would fit in the above two categories. I could see where a person who is a top TPE earner becomes burned out some what quicker than someone who is more relaxed due to it TPE being somewhat of a duty. People who are more relaxed with TPE may be more just along for the ride but could also see where they may not be as engaged quite as long unless they’re pretty active in the locker room. Those are just worst case scenarios though obviously lol. Either way I am sure you run the risk but still makes me wonder.

From my personal experience, making money(or having a good chunk saved) is also important because not only will your player be able to purchase training and equipment, but it also signifies good activity levels via creating content or holding a job

speaking of activity, just having and showing a pulse around the league goes a long way --- people may not actively scout you but they will take note of your presence as a user

stats and TPE don't matter except for QB, every team usually has a fix for you, which is why they drafted you. 


If people don't know you, you'll slide down the draft board in some capacity

In my experience, teams would rather draft an inactive/low earning user if they don’t have any personality issues compared to an average earner with personality issues.

I just wanted to take a moment and share that you are literally one of the most beautiful cases of rookie goofing up, learning their lesson, and turning it around that I have ever seen. I know that the GMs that drafted you have been so proud of your growth and mindset shift, and as a rookie mentor I'm so thankful that you were given the shot on a team that was able to really help mold you into the type of user almost any team would want.
