*Defensive Ends in S31 and all-time - JuOSu - 10-17-2021 As a Defensive End myself, I am always intrigued by my competition and how we stack up in a historical context, especially with the game change. A lot has changed so let's look at that a bit in more depth. And to start with, let's look at this season and see who should be nominated for the Defensive End of the Year award. The candidates: K. Kane-Maika'i: The New York DE is a strong candidate this season. With 50 tackles he is third among DE in that category. His combined 15 tackles for loss and sacks are tied for the best among DE as well. His biggest weakness is that he is strong everywhere but doesn't necessarily lead any one category on his own. L. Taylor: The Yellowknife defender leads DE in sacks with 12, but has only had 3 tackles for loss. Still that also ties him for the DE lead with 15 combined. He also forced three fumbles which is a very solid measurement in that statistic. I think Taylor might be the frontrunner. M. Toblerone: My own player is also tied for the league lead with 15, though that last game and the re-sim cost me the solo lead. My 8 tackles for loss lead DE in that category, while 7 sacks is still very solid. I don't think I will win this award against the other two, but I think I should at least be nominated. B. Van Sanzo: I don't think he really has the same stats as the others, but he still has 10 sacks and his 5 forced fumbles really stand out. T. Wrecks: 7 tackles for loss and 7 sacks is still a very solid season from Tex, though the tackles are definitely dropping off at this point. For me, it should be between the first three names this season. If pushed, I would probably vote for Taylor, but I think all three have a good claim to it. After looking at this season, I wanted to look at some career stats. I think it's especially difficult with Defensive Ends because many of the career records are not held by us but by Linebackers instead. And also with the change in games, our stats got worse and we can't really get close to those. So I wanted to actually make a list of players that only counts stats of Defensive Ends, so that they can be compared better. Now I will say, especially in early seasons, this can sometimes still be misleading and it's possible that 2-3 seasons of different players were counted where they actually played linebacker but were listed as a DE in the file. That being said, I was trying to be careful. So yeah basically I counted all the stats people had where they were listed as a Defensive End in the index. This took quite a bit of time to accumulate but it's all good. Let's first look at which defensive ends have played the most seasons as a defensive end. Here are all the DE that have played at least 7 seasons at DE: Nero Alexander 12 I. Blackstone 11 G. Kuusela 11 T. Egghands 10 D. Davidson 10 K. Hendrix 10 K. Mbanefo 10 L. Rax 10 Z. Skinner 10 M. Karpaasi 9 S. Goku 9 Jayce Tuck 9 Ja'Brill Tuck 9 D. Dam 9 F. Wozy 9 J. Cho 9 J. Kearse 9 L. Smyles 9 N. Bagwell 9 S. Ocewilder 9 A. Montain 8 A. Sandoval 8 A. Tomlinson 8 A. Waiters 8 C. Joshua 8 I. Kalilmoku 8 M. VonPebbles 8 R. Maddox 8 S. Claxton 8 S. Ryeu 8 A. Ranger 7 M. Toblerone 7 R. Crowder 7 T. Wrecks 7 A. Woodham 7 C. Maulolo 7 C. Okonkwo 7 D. Poopsie 7 G. Wright Jr. 7 J. Henry 7 J. Sachs 7 L. Noble Jr. 7 O. Marrett 7 S. Oats 7 We see some big names on this list, including the leader Nero Alexander. Some very high names are still active too or at least were in this past season, like second place I. Blackstone and fourth place T. Egghands. Speaking of big names... who has made the hall of fame as a Defensive End? I am assuming that Nero Alexander will get there one day, but who is already in? Well it turns out, only three players have made the hall of fame as a defensive end, and frankly one of them didn't make it because of his contributions as a DE, but a QB instead: Fuego Wozy, Kurt Hendrix and Childish Gambino. So it will be especially interesting to compare people to them and see who else might have a chance to be inducted into the hall of fame one day. Here is a list of those DE that still had stats this season, so you can know that anyone of those below in lists may still improve further in their careers and how many seasons they have done so far: I. Blackstone 11 T. Egghands 10 M. Karpaasi 9 S. Goku 9 A. Montain 8 A. Ranger 7 M. Toblerone 7 R. Crowder 7 T. Wrecks 7 E. Slayer 6 S. Roes 6 B. Van Sanzo 5 D. Jaxson 5 K. Kane-Maika'i 5 L. Taylor 5 X. Jaxon-Waxon 5 B. Beanman 4 M. Brando 4 Mongo 3 R. Arrow Jr. 3 There are three people missing from the below tables because they changed names, so in that case it was unclear who really they were or what their stats were. So there may be mistakes there. For these below tables, I have shown everyone's stats who has played at least three seasons at defensive end: Tackles: Nero Alexander 522 I. Alexander leads the way, with Blackstone following. Four guys are ahead of the first hall of famer (though he did also play at linebacker a bit I think, so obviously those stats aren't counted here). The other hall of famer Wozy isn't even in the top ten anymore. We see four still active guys (at least this past season) in the top ten, with Blackstone, Egghands, Goku and Jaxon-Waxon. Famous early season DE Jayce Tuck makes his first appearance in the top 3 of a category. Wozy shows why he is in the hall of fame being in 4th place here. Only Blackstone and Egghands are in the top ten of actives. Even further down, only Goku is active and in the top 30 besides those two. The new sim has really taken away tackles for loss and made it impossible to get close to the top here anymore. Sacks: Jayce Tuck 106 Kurt Hendrix 99 I. Blackstone 77 S. Hendrix came close though! This category seems more favorable to recent DE again, with several in the top 20. Taylor and Kane-Maiki'i are especially impressive because they have only had 5 seasons so far. My own player is also in the top 20 here, giving me some hope to still gain some spots here in my career. I don't think I will have a chance against Taylor and Kane-Maika'i just timing wise, but I should still manage to easily get into the top 10 and maybe even the top 5 if my career continues to go as it has in the past. The top three are all actives, with Egghands, Wrecks and Taylor at the top. In the case of Taylor, he is only in his 5th season, so has a huge career already in this way. 13 of the top 20 player are currently active. Fumbles recovered: D. Jaxson 11 T. Arrow Jr. 1 Arlington Heights 1 I guess it's not a surprise that we are also decent here if we force more fumbles, as actives once again are near the top, though it is clearly a far less impressive picture. We force more fumbles but we don't necessarily also recover them all. Still, very impressive from Jaxson at the top. So who will actually be a hall of famer? Well if history has taught us anything, DE are not favored to go into the hall of fame, if we have only seen one true DE and two somewhat regular DE go in. Still, you have to imagine that Nero Alexander and Blackstone are locks for the hall of fame. Egghands could have a chance as well I think. Later on, we have Toblerone and Wrecks with an outside shot, and then Taylor and Kane-Maika'i who look like absolute studs so far and definitely have a shot as well. I will try to continue this season yearly now so we will see how it evolves. Also sorry, but in this season, the active players didn't have their first names shown here. I forgot to change them in the spreadsheet before posting this. I will fix it for next season (if I remember). RE: Defensive Ends in S31 and all-time - ComebackZak - 10-17-2021 My brother is going to make the HOF and I won't. Life isn't fair lmao RE: Defensive Ends in S31 and all-time - Pat - 10-17-2021 Leonard Taylor also has two DE of the Year awards to add to his resume, too, with a few more seasons playing at his peak. He should have a better than outside shot at the Hall. RE: Defensive Ends in S31 and all-time - Billybolo53 - 10-17-2021 Goku for hof or we riot RE: Defensive Ends in S31 and all-time - Tayjay - 10-18-2021 Love the article. I switched to DE when I came up because I thought that sim switch would net more sacks and the shelf life was longer than a linebacker. We may not have the sexy stats of linebackers but I think we are vastly underrated and honestly shafted by the sim. The “pass rushing” linebacker is hardly equivalent to a real life pass rushing linebacker. Yet I digress. So now my goal is just to win as many awards and smash all of the defensive end records so that whatever powers at be have to put me in the HOF. If some defensive lineman don’t get in given the great players that are present then I think HO, balancing team, and whomever else should probably take a look. |
