*Which DSFL S33 Rookie has the best name? - PugWalrus - 11-05-2021
Hello once again!
My name is PugWalrus (AKA Spicy Ron), and today, I want to show you one of my favorite polling methods applied to this season's DSFL rookie names. Last season I applied it to the S32 class, and I plan on making this a recurring series going forward for each draft class.
The poll was sent to the ISFL, and DSFL discords, I also asked participants to send the poll to their respective locker room discords. The poll was simple "which DSFL rookie has the better name?"
The way this poll works is different from most polls. Instead of taking all 35+ rookies and asking for participants to pick their favorite, options were paired in head-to-head matchups 2 at a time, and participants had to pick their favorite of the two. Participants could vote as many times as they wanted to, as the poll would keep generating head-to-head matchups forever until the user stopped voting. This time around, the poll this time received around 600+ votes.
Results were generated based on what percentage of head-to-head matchups each given name won. So if a player scores 57 for example, that means that they won against 57% of any given matchups they were paired up against.
So, without further ado, here are the results:

THOUGHTS:
1. Thokk The Scarred takes first place, with around 73% of matchups won. Kaguya Shinomiya and Greg Strongjaw taking 2nd and 3rd respectively
2. Once again, the goofier names typically end up taking the top spots. However this time around, a few names that I found to be quite funny ended up falling to the lower end of the spectrum. Particularly Bud R. Fingers and King Zeus. However, this poll received a much smaller sample size than the first one, so there is a chance that more of a bias ended up falling on the data from one or two users voting far more than others. (Kinda looking at your Leonardo McTurtle, you hit 80% at one point and I don't know if people like Leonardo THAT much more than Raphael lol).
3. There were a lot more goofy names on average for this class. With only a couple "normal" names ending up in the pool. This made for a pretty interesting dynamic and some intriguing matchups.
4. Someone actually suggested their own response to the poll somehow. Asking me to add "Gus Buss" to the poll in addition to Gus Bus. I did not allow the response to be added but I found it to be pretty entertaining.
5. One last thing: I was thinking of making a grand poll every 5 seasons or so using the top 5 rookies of each class to determine the best rookie name overall. If this were to happen, the current pool would be as follows:

Name explanation:
Bartok: Comes from Bela Bartok, the Hungarian composer whose most famous opera is "Bluebeard's Castle". He was also incredibly influential in the development of the Hungarian national identity. The reason I was thinking about this was because I'd recently been researching the band Gogol Bordello and found out that one of their original name ideas was "Hutz and the Bela Bartoks", but the lead singer was quoted as saying "Nobody knows who the hell Bela Bartok is in the United States".
Kawai: From the name Bela Bartok, the first name could be read as the Italian word for "beautiful". So, I wanted to use a word with a similar meaning that could be used as a name as well. Since I'm a weeb, I landed on "Kawai". The actual word is "Kawaii", meaning cute; but the character that I used as the excuse for this name was Rika Kawai from Wonder Egg Priority. In that, it was a last name, but I figured I could try to make it make sense. Her name is Kawai because she's so cute!
Kanbaru: I wanted to make sure that the name made sense. I didn't want to mix an extremely Japanese name with an extremely Eastern European one without reason. So, the only real character-building I had for the character was that her mom is Japanese and her dad is Polish-Hungarian. The correct order in terms of naming convention would actually mean that her name would be "Kawai Bartok Kanbaru", but that's on me that I fucked up. But, it seems like people are treating this like it's her middle name when it's actually just her name. I think my original idea was hyphenating the name, but that just didn't happen I guess. Anyway, the name Kanbaru comes from my favorite character from the Monogatari series: Suruga Kanbaru. I've recently finally decided on a render for her because I just decided to stick with who I got the name from. Although, while she's with the Grey Ducks, she will be Oozora Subaru.
