*Cause for Concern - woelkers - 11-06-2021
Tension continues to build between the Philadelphia Liberty organization and rookie cornerback Cedric Wilkins II, as Wilkins was spotted at Philadelphia International Airport bright and early the morning following the team’s final preseason contest against the Orange County Otters. With the knowledge that both the former starting nickelback Matt Cross (@J0EB) and current defensive captain Xavier Walls (@xtitanxmvpx) commented on concerns about Wilkins’ commitment and work ethic during the preseason, reporters swarmed Wilkins as he headed towards his gate, blitzing him with demands for comments regarding the words of his teammates.
Wilkins, who despite his best efforts to dodge the attention of the media this offseason, has drawn more attention than ever since his return to the field, initially refused to comment extensively, responding to confrontation with Cross’ statements, “I ain’t got time for this shit, man. Mother fucker ain’t get my situation, he ain’t know what I’m doing with my time. I said I’d be ready, I will be”. However, once confronted with the concerns of his captain, Wilkins’ emotions seemed to get the best of him, “You want a fucking statement? I’ll give you a statement. I don’t give a damn what people are saying. I busted my ass to be here, and I’m still busting my ass to prove I’m worth what I say I am. Walls ain’t fucking know me, Cross ain’t fucking know me, they don’t see what I come from or what I’m doing behind the scenes, so with all due respect, they can fuck themselves. Man, quit bugging me, I got people counting on me”.
Wilkins, pressed to comment on the possibility of fines or other penalties, murmured, “Lip can fucking try me, man, he ain’t getting shit from me,” and proceeded to continue to his gate, silently fuming as the crowd of reporters parted to let him through.
Lip Stashe (@ShnarlyDude), speaking on behalf of the front office, said of the situation, “We're obviously disappointed…we're growing very frustrated, and I know a lot of the guys on the team…this seems to be a source of contention among players, and they’re starting to press the front office to make a decision regarding [Wilkins’] future with the team. At this time we're not looking to make any decision on Wilkins, but I can say he will start to be fined soon, if he doesn't report to camp. I just want the team to focus on the upcoming season, but we need our leaders to convince him to come back. We fell just short of the playoffs last season, and if everybody could come together, there’s no telling what this team could do”.
Lip Chap (@Pat), however, refused to be spoken for, releasing a comment of his own, “It's really unfortunate to see a player not reporting to camp. We expect our players to lead by example, and Cedric absolutely is not doing that. I honestly blame all this technology and apps for these players not understanding what hard work is. When I was a youngster, we didn't have all this Tictac and Tumblers and I turned out just fine. We haven't decided yet on the direction we'll be heading in with regards to Calvin, but I think our first step should be to take away his phone privileges”. Reporters, concerned for Chap’s well-being, agreed to publish his statement, if only to keep him calm and content in the wake of what he described as a heartbreaking betrayal by his partner.
Our sources indicate that Wilkins’ flight this week was scheduled for his hometown of Baton Rouge. Whether this is simply a courtesy visit to his mother or a trip to meet with the Second Line organization in New Orleans is unclear, but what we can say with certainty: Wilkins seems to have little interest in being in Philadelphia, at least for the moment.
