Top Safety Prospect Devin Speed talks to the Media - King - 05-25-2017

After two years of playing at Virginia Tech, I have chosen that I am finally prepared to move up into the NSFL. I have loved being at Virginia Tech but think its about time to bring my Elite talents to the next level. Being a prospect, I want to prove to everybody that I am the best safety in this class and I refuse to allow anybody to prove otherwise. I'll be taking questions from the media now...

1) What coverage scheme do you feel you thrive in? (Cover 1, Cover 2, Tampa-2, quarter-quarter-half, etc)
2) How do you prepare when you are facing a QB that you know has the talent to look you off to the wrong side of the field?
3) If the QB figures out the defensive play pre-snap and audibles a TE into your coverage, how do you change your playstyle to accommodate the much larger target?
4) Which of your attributes do you feel to be your biggest strength? Your biggest weakness?
5) Where else on the defense would you like an elite player to best compliment you?

1. What coverage scheme do you feel you thrive in? (Cover 1, Cover 2, Tampa-2, quarter-quarter-half, etc)

Great Question, because of my speed and ability to break on the ball, a Cover-1 defensive scheme is always one of my favorites. The ability to have space on the field and a responsibility to cover anything deep is one of the things i'm great at. It's also nice to know the DC trusts in you to make a play when in Cover-1

2. How do you prepare when you are facing a QB that you know has the talent to look you off to the wrong side of the field?

This is one of those things that are mainly instinctual. The QB is not the only one that can trick with their eyes and body language. I am also doing my best to make sure that i'm not revealing too much about where I will be or what I am doing. My ability to change direction and accelerate also allows for me to be able to break on the ball on the off chance that the QB does look me off on the opposite side of the field.

3. If the QB figures out the defensive play pre-snap and audibles a TE into your coverage, how do you change your playstyle to accommodate the much larger target?

Depending on the coverage, personnel, and play, it comes down to whether or not I have a SS back there with me. Although it may not be my duty to be a run-stopper or TE stopper, I never back down from the opportunity to show a TE just how hard I can actually hit... and if he doesn't have the ball when I meet him, then to me, it's just an easier opportunity to break up the pass or get an easy interception, with how clumsy those TE's can be.

4. Which of your attributes do you feel to be your biggest strength? Your biggest weakness?

I take pride in my last name and will always be the fastest man on the field. My biggest weakness would probably be my strength. Although my strength is underrated, I do believe it is something that I can continuously improve upon to become the best safety in this league.

5. Where else on the defense would you like an elite player to best compliment you?

Nothing more deadly than 2 safeties staring directly into the quarterbacks eyes, daring him to throw anywhere near us. A safety duo is something I am definitely looking forward to.

Thanks for the questions.

1. What do you think is your biggest motivation heading into the NSFL?

My biggest motivation is definitely to prove that I am the best safety in this class and that I will do anything in my power to become the best safety this league has ever seen. Nothing will stop me.

2. What have you learned in college that will help you succeed at the next level?

Coming from Virginia Tech, the biggest thing I learned was that to succeed, you have to give it your all and the rewards will reveal themselves to you. Hard work will be the biggest thing I bring from college moving forward. I cant thank my coaches enough for giving me everything they could to help me succeed.

3. How is your ego? and How well do you mesh with others?

I like to say i'm confident, but not arrogant. I truly believe that I am the best player in this draft and that I will do all that I can to continue to improve myself. I do think i'm the best, I will never back down and i'm never scared to tell somebody that I am better than them... but on the other hand, working with others and bringing our unique skills together to learn from one another and put our best efforts to do what's best for the team is something that I will ALWAYS put in front of everything else.

Thank you for the questions.

5. What do you have planned for life after football?

1. Did the NFL ever reach out to you?

Although they did reach out to me, I am happy to be taking my talents to the NSFL. Can't wait to get drafted and prove my worth to whatever team that drafts me.

2. What did you study at VT? Are you upset you didn't graduate?

I studied communications. Although at some point I will go back to finish my degree, it has always been my goal to go to the league, so I am fine with not graduating yet.

3. What was the most difficult decision you ever made?

The most difficult decision I have ever made was where I was going to play college football where I did. I am glad that I chose Virginia Tech over all of the other schools that offered me.

4. If we asked your parents which city they want you to play in the NSFL, what would they tell us?

Probably Baltimore, since my father lives there.

5. What do you have planned for life after football?

I have no idea yet, but that's a great question. Maybe i'll be an ESPN commentator or something haha.

1) How do you respond to those who say you are overrated going in this years draft?

2) If you could choose to start a game, be MVP but ultimately lose, or be benched early in a game but the team ultimately wins, which would you chose and why?

3) If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

4) If you chose to be bigger or stronger, which would you be and why?

5) Do you think the argument that Dbacks would be wide receivers if they had better hands holds weight?
