*Clifford Rove - Preseason Recap - Yurt6 - 09-16-2017

The fans of Philadelphia are hoping that Clifford Rove, the team’s first pick in the S3 draft (and 11th overall), will become the franchise player that many see him becoming. Suffice it to say, Rove has gotten off to a rocky start in his rookie campaign. With his preseason behind him, Rove is now looking forward to the regular season for which he has said he will “bring his A-game”. We thought we would take a look back at the numbers behind his preseason, and determine what went right, and what went wrong.

For the first game of the preseason, the Liberty were away against the Yellowknife Wraiths. Having your first professional game at an opposing team’s stadium is tough enough, and this was just made tougher by the fact that it was Yellowknife they had to play. For the game, Rove threw the ball 39 times, and 23 of those passes were completed. He was able to rack up 249 yards, while throwing one touchdown and no picks. While the team lost 20-16, there were breakout performances from tight end Paul DiMirio, who was able to rack up 101 yards on 9 catches, and the safety Vikian Marmeladov, who grabbed two interceptions along with four tackles for the game.

For the second game of the preseason, the Liberty hosted the Colorado Yeti, who had a pre-scandal Logan Noble. Rove again had 39 passing attempts, this time only completing 17 of his passes, for a paltry 44% completion rate. This was only enough to get him 216 yards, as well as only 1 touchdown with 2 interceptions. This game could definitely best be described as a learning experience for the young quarterback. The Liberty ended up losing the game 27-9. Omar Wright was a bright spot for the offense, racking up 86 yards on 21 attempts, which is an average of 4.1 yards per carry.

The third game of the preseason was a close knit affair between the Liberty and the Baltimore Hawks, in Baltimore. Rove’s performance was dismal at best, throwing 23 completions on 40 attempts for 252 yards, while getting 2 touchdowns and throwing for 5 PICKS. Yes you read that right, Rove through 5 interceptions. What is even more surprising than that number is that the Baltimore Hawks were only able to score 20 points (Liberty scored 17). This is a testament to the strong Liberty defense, led that night by Luke Washington, who was able to get 12 tackles.

The final game of the preseason was a home game for the Liberty against the Arizona Outlaws, defending back to back champs. The stadium was packed, as the newly revamped Liberty were eager to test themselves against such a dominant team. Rove had his best showing of the preseason, throwing 24 for 37, with 269 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception. The Liberty played hard to the end, losing only 27-23 to the consensus best team in the league. Fox North had a career game, receiving 120 yards on only 7 reception, an average of 17.1 yards per catch. This was a wake up call for the Outlaws, who’s closest game before this was a win by 13 points over the SaberCats.

So what were the stat totals for Rove this preseason? He threw 87 for 155, a completion percentage of only 56%. He averaged about 38 passes a game, so its clear the Liberty coaching staff want to run the offense through him. He was able to rack up 986 yards, while throwing for 6 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, a ratio of 3:4. What caused this less than desirable performance? Was it rookie jitters, or maybe something else? The sack totals from the games suggest it was probably something else. In total, Rove was sacked 33 times this preseason, an average of 8 sacks a game. You can imagine the pressure Rove was facing all night. It certainly doesn’t help that he is a less than mobile quarterback either, but the sack numbers speak for themselves.

33 sacks...holy crap.

I mean this is just setting the QB up for failure. 33 sacks over four games is fucking insane. That's more than 8 per game, essentially twice a quarter. I don't know if its team construction or if its play calling, but going down twice a quarter for a Rookie QB is just a terrible job by the O Line.

We have four actives on the five-man line. We'll be getting better consistently.

I wonder if its the playcalling too. You guys pass more than any team in the league, so that will lead to more sacks. I'm too lazy to calculate sack rate

That's true, I'd imagine it has no impact on OL ability to generate pancakes but a negative impact on Sacks Allowed, since you can't allow a sack on a run play. Maybe a better stat would be Stats allowed + TFL allowed?

I feel like TFL allowed is harder to pin on a single person, but rather the line as a whole. Its hard to say. I believe line gets more pancakes on pass plays then run plays as well since they last longer.

I feel like pancakes are going to happen, predominantly, at the first contact between OL and DL. It seems unnatural for a blocker and a rusher to be going at it for a couple seconds and then suddenly he gets pushed over. I'm not sure if there's much of a difference.

Maybe this will open up a door for a stats article about relation of Pancakes to Pass%, and Sacks Allowed to Pass%.
