Chicago Blues Releases Statement on Haruki Protest - Jiggly_333 - 09-29-2017

The Chicago Blues organization above all supports freedom and equality. We as a team, an organization, and a family support Haruki's decision to kneel for the national anthem. In our beautiful city, we know inequality far too well. Gang violence, caused by a broken schooling system, took 751 people last year. This year, the number is already to 519. These citizens ranged from children to elders, they were men and women, they were black and white. We also know that the Chicago Police Department has been trying their hardest to bring down those numbers, but as we all know from the Laquan McDonald case that even they have a ways to go. In order to fix these issues, a conversation has to be started and a dialogue has to be shared and continued by both sides.

These protests aren't about the national anthem, the flag itself, the military, or even the police. It's about the fact that there are still people who are out there who judge others by the color of their skin, by the people they love, and by what they have in their pants. We as an organization feel like we should represent the people of our community, the great people of the City of Chicago, and stand against racism, sexism, and any form of bigotry. Those who kneel do so because they cannot in good conscience look up at the American flag and say that it is a symbol of freedom. Because right now our beautiful country isn't the Land of Opportunity for all.

In solidarity with Haruki's protest, the Blues organization have decided that shouldn't have to kneel. Instead, we, the Chicago Blues organization, have decided to announce that the team will not be walking out for the anthem before games. We will still have the national anthem performed and the flag rolled out in ordinance with municipal laws and league rules, but we have decided that the team does not need to be out on the field for the anthem.

We hope that everyone can make a difference in stomping out hatred so we can go back to playing football.

By all means, protest racism. Divert some of your cap space to the NAACP, and encourage your players to donate some of their salaries to local neighborhood organizations which promote equality. Lobby your local representatives to reform laws which reinforce racial disparities and volunteer your time on local commissions to oversee police conduct. In other words, actually do something instead of protesting a song about the US victory in the War of 1812. This move is simply a publicity stunt by a failing franchise as opposed to actual action to improve social conditions for anyone.

Amazing response. Do all those things. Even do small things like not making racist jokes and finding ways to include more and different people in your life.

On the protest though, it's to get people to do those things. You ask "why aren't they standing?" and then you find out why and it's supposed to get people going and talking and taking action. I personally don't think it's sustainable to keep doing, but for the moment it's a great way to start a conversation to get people to do those things.
