Hunt Still on the Fringes of Stardom
Despite being a core piece of the San Jose Sabercats' playoff hopes and roster, Ethan Hunt is still struggling to develop into a true star quarterback

When Ethan Hunt was acquired by the San Jose Sabercats, he was projected to blossom into a versatile, intelligent, agile and highly skilled quarterback who would help propel the Sabercats into playoff contention. Two seasons later, and Hunt has still yet to make the same impact despite management's best efforts to build a championship team to help support the Idaho State product.

It's not because the Sabercats have stalled Hunt's development, nor is it that they are acquiring the wrong players to help complement Hunt's style of game, it's mainly on Hunt now. The 23-year old has now fallen trend to a hot start and then failing to maintain the pace throughout the season. As seen last year, Hunt can be one of the most inconsistent quarterbacks in the league, looking like an elite quarterback one game before regressing immensely and forgetting how to throw a football in the following game. Is it a confidence issue? Coaching issue? Or is it just Hunt showing he's not cut out to be a starter?

"I'm still putting in the time and effort to try and improve my game." Hunt told media after this morning's practice in Philadelphia. "You guys may think I'm just relaxing, enjoying the ride of pro football and just showing up day to day just to collect my paycheck, but it's way more than that. I have to mentally and emotionally invest myself into every single play, and whenever it doesn't go right, it's always a shot to your confidence. Did I make the right play? What went wrong? You don't think I stay up sometimes after a bad loss to a team like Orange County and just think of all the plays that could've gone right, but didn't. But I do. I'm trying to become a better player for this franchise, for management, for my teammates and more importantly the fans."

Hunt's attitude is probably one of the better qualities of the quarterback. Not only is he dedicated to improvement, but he has realized that the constant failures of the Sabercats wears not only on management and the team, but the fanbase. Every time after practice, Hunt can be seen practicing his throws and accuracy for an hour after the last player has left the field. Dedication and perseverance isn't everything, but it's one way to start to improve.

"I'm tired of losing." Hunt said. "I want to show my teammates that. I want them to know that. This win [over Las Vegas] doesn't mean anything if we can't even qualify for the playoffs. We have to show that we're hungry, that this is our year, that we're pushing for the playoffs. Every game we play in our own conference has to be treated like a playoff game. We need a drive and a goal to strive for, and that's the playoffs."

A quarterback is supposed to step up as a leader for their team. Not only does the majority of the offence rely on the quarterback's ability to coordinate their wide receivers and running backs, but also the quarterback's intelligence and adaptability to the situation at hand. Hunt has shown that he has the adaptability and intelligence to improvise in game situations gone wrong, but he still needs to make the jump to becoming one of the key leaders in the Sabercats locker room.

That is the only reason why Hunt isn't a star quarterback. He isn't that big of a leader for the Sabercats. In order to show the team that they're much more than a playoff bubble team, Hunt has to lead by example and be vocal about it. Complaining to the media can get you so much.

That and the fact it's only been recently that Hunt has learned how to not throw an interception.

Go Hunt! He's one of my favorite QBs in the league (Rove and Pierno included).
