The Santa Ana Star

Playoff Hopes Still Alive for the SaberCats

Heading into Week 13, historically the playoffs have been all but decided and teams play for honor and position. This season, however, both the ASFC and NSFC #2 are still up for grabs by a hair. It seems unlikely for either the SaberCats or Wraiths to make up the game and a half deficit they need to push into a playoff spot, but it's still not impossible. For the Orange County Otters, the team will end the season with 2 tough home games, and they only need to win one of them to seal the deal. The SaberCats must defend their home field against an Outlaws team already thinking about the three-peat, then go on the road and put down the reeling Colorado Yetis. Here's how San Jose can get it done and find themselves a playoff team for the first time ever.

---

Step 1: The Otters need to crumble

The first and most important part of the equation is the Otters have to lose both of their remaining games. Even in the unlikely event of a tie (and correct me if I'm wrong) resulting in both teams at 7-6-1, the Otters would win the tiebreaker on points. The first game is San Jose's best bet of staying alive. While the Otters have played extremely well at home, scoring record points and going 4-1, the Hawks also play very well on the road. They have one of the best secondaries in the league which will test the limits of QB Mike Boss, who has shown he can be picked apart when he's forced to make tough throws. If the Otters lose this, then the Cats need a miracle as the Wraiths must take down OC yet again. The Wraiths can put up a lot of points but have not played well and don't have a great defense. This game would have to be won in a shootout off the arm of Chris Orosz, a QB that has played below his potential this season and is due for a brilliant performance. The Wraiths will be fighting hard too if their playoff hopes are still alive.

Step 2: Ethan Hunt needs some magic

When the Otters had their QB controversy of Season 1, the two odd men out left town to a name for themselves and prove their former GMs wrong. While Bercovici did exactly the opposite of that, the wily and witty Ethan Hunt has shown he is every bit a capable starting QB in this league. While he hasn't gotten the kind of positive rushing you expect from a mobile QB, his legs allow him to extend plays and he has shown he can be efficient and limit turnovers. With targets like Weston, Jackson, Smallwood, and Bottles, he has a lot to work with and he will have to produce two perfect games to get them to 7.5 wins.

Step 3: The Defense needs to beat Arizona

This the kicker for San Jose. Even if everything else goes their way, they still have to take down the one loss Outlaws who are now only waiting to clinch homefield advantage in the championship game. If it's going to be done, the Cats will have to offensively show the same tenacity we saw earlier this year when they brought in 1 point wins over the Otters and Wraiths and came back in the 4th to tie the Liberty (though they couldn't deliver the win in OT). The true challenge will be their defense keeping the game winnable by holding Arizona to under 24 points. Arizona's only loss this season came when King Bronko was sacked 7 times and picked off without throwing a TD in return. If the Cats can replicate that performance and force Mackworthy to produce on the ground, they can keep the score low enough that the game might just be winnable.

---

There you have it. Does anyone think the Cats actually have a hope of sneaking into the #2 spot in the ASFC? Do the Wraiths have a better shot at 1.5 games back from Philly? The Liberty are very likely to put a hurting on Colorado so I doubt that very much, but the Cats may be out of it with Arizona coming to town. What does the future hold for this young organization that has outperformed expectations this year? Will Ethan Hunt stay and try to become San Jose's franchise QB or will they have to turn elsewhere?

But he's technically incorrect.

We can technically make the playoffs... but we won't barring divine intervention.

Once again, as I have struggled with this for most of my life, I was a little premature. I guess he won't "technically" be correct for another 8 hours or so. Good catch.
