*Statistical Quirks - 2 - iamslm22 - 10-09-2017 Hey all! Today we're going to take a look at the records on the offensive side of the ball. I'm not sure how many have noticed, but nearly every relevant offensive record is about to be broken. Today we're going to discuss those records and evaluate why nearly all of them are going to be broken. For those unfamiliar with the statistical quirks series, I wrote the first article here. I'm again going to discuss what is happening (the record), why it happened, and whether it can continue in both the playoffs and in S4. Lets start with the most obvious one. Mike Boss is re-writing the record books THE STAT: This is one is known by most fans of the NSFL, but I'm not sure if anyone realizes exactly how impressive Boss has been this year. Boss has already broken the single season record for passing yards and touchdowns. He is on pace to break the records on attempts and completions as well. Boss is also likely to break the record on passer rating. The one record he is not going to have is completion percentage, but with his volume that would be an incredibly difficult task. (quick note, if Boss has an awful two games and drops below the record for passer rating, King Bronko is also on a record setting pace, just behind Boss) WHY IS IT HAPPENING: There are a few reasons why these records are being broken. First off is volume. The Otters realize that they need to throw the ball a ton to win games, and they're doing that so Boss is getting the counting stats. The second reason, is that Boss and his top two Wide outs, Robert Phelps and Bradley Westfield, have continued to get better and better. Those three have TPE totals higher than most defenders they face, and couple that with the best offensive line duo in the league with Angus Winchester and Gregor Clegane, and you can see why this offense dominates. These guys are the best offense in the league. WILL IT CONTINUE: Well I'm not sure this will continue in the playoffs. They're going to have to go to Arizona and face the best defense in the league. So I don't think Boss will have an incredible game. As far as S4 there's no reason Boss can't improve on these stats. The Otters will likely keep throwing the ball a lot, and they're going to keep doing it. The one caveat is, it depends on where Boss goes. He likely knows these numbers wouldn't happen if he was in Las Vegas, so it'll be interesting to see where he goes and how he does. Nicholas Pierno - Interception King THE STAT: Nicholas Pierno of the Colorado Yeti already broke the record set by Josh Bercovici in S2 for passing interceptions thrown. Berc last year threw 23 interceptions, and this year Pierno already has 33. WHY IS IT HAPPENING: This is obvious. Pierno is a talented hard working QB who just was not ready for the NSFL. The Yeti were put in an awful position by Logan Noble and they panic traded for Pierno and started him when his TPE totals and overall were obvious that he could not play in the NSFL yet. WILL IT CONTINUE: NO! I am VERY confident that Pierno will not break his own record in S4. He has gotten so much better as the year as gone on, and I have little doubt he will continue to get better. Will someone else pass Pierno's record? I don't think so. This season was an incredibly unique situation, Pierno was put in an awful position, and with the DSFL QBs should be coming out much more polished than Pierno in the future. Rushing Records Also Being Set THE STAT: The Rushing Records in the league are also likely to fall and have new leaders after S3. Right now both Boss Tweed and Reg Mackworthy are set to break Darlane Farlane's S2 rushing yards record. Both Tweed and Farlane are also set to pass Farlane in rushing attempts. The Touchdown Record set by Omar Wright has already been tied, by both Mackworthy and Otters Rookie Erlich Bunsman. If either can score a TD in the last two games of the year, they will set the record. WHY IS IT HAPPENING: Boss Tweed is incredible. How he is doing this behind a bad offensive line, and without a QB or a Pro Bowl level receiver is insanity. Tweed's volume makes sense, but that he's turned it into efficiency and is having a strong season like he is incredible. Scoring in the NSFL is up this year, so it makes sense that both Passing and Rushing records would fall. Offensive linemen are catching up to the Defensive linemen in builds, so perhaps that's another reason. WILL IT CONTINUE: I think as Pierno gets better, the Yeti won't have to rely on Tweed as much. As far as Mackworthy and Burnsman I think Mackworthy can continue, but Rushing Touchdowns are much more situational than skill. Burnsman especially has been lucky. He's an incredibly high amount of redzone carries, and he has converted them into touchdowns. Receiving Touchdowns and Yards THE STAT: Receiving touchdown record set by Kendrick Hendrix has already fallen. To no one's surprise Orange County Otters Bradley Westfield and Robert Phelps have broken it, and Shane Weston of the San Jose Sabercats has as well. Bradley Westfield is also likely to set the record on Receiving Yards set by his teammate Phelps last season. WHY IS IT HAPPENING: See the category on passing stats. It's really similar, the OC offense is amazing, and passing in general is up in S3. WILL IT CONTINUE: For Weston this is a great season, but I don't see him having another year like this next year. He's paired up with Mayran Jackson, and Hunt is a shaky QB. For Phelps and Westfield this all depends on Boss. If Boss goes to LV or another city, then they will not set more records. But if he comes back, look out. Pancake Record is Toast THE STAT: Tim Pest and Angus Winchester are about to break the record for pancakes in a season, with Pest likely taking the crown. What is most impressive about this season by the two of them is in S2 the pancake leader allowed plenty of sacks, but this year Pest and Winchester have not allowed a sack at all. WHY IS IT HAPPENING: I covered this in last week's Statistical Quirks, but Offensive Linemen are going to continue to improve while the top defenders top off. This is why guys like Pest and Winchester are having historic, record breaking seasons. WILL IT CONTINUE: Yes. These guys are two of the best in the league, and I could easily see either one of these guys setting the record again next year. So there you have it! Hope you enjoyed this week in Statistical Quirks. As always please leave any comments or questions! Thanks. 1182 - Ready GRADED *Statistical Quirks - 2 - PDXBaller - 10-09-2017 Great breakdown!
