*S3 Rookie Wide Receivers Recap Week 11 & 12 - ItsJustBarry - 10-09-2017 Now that week 12 is in the books we can take a look at how the rookies performed, where they are in line with my predictions, and maybe update a few predictions. Samuel Zhang – 23rd overall – Arizona Outlaws Prediction: around 500 yards and 4 TDs With Week 11 and 12 in the books, it’s time to recap the last 2 weeks. As the Arizona Outlaws continue their push for a third Ultimus, rookie receiver Samuel Zhang has almost been removed from their dynamic offense. Through the first 10 weeks, Zhang was averaging 4 catches for 48 yards. In week 11, the Outlaws played host to the Yellowknife Wraiths. While the Outlaws won easily, Zhang only contributed 2 receptions for 11 yards. These are season lows for yards and YPC. In a game where the Outlaws’ lead was never threatened, you would think it would be an ideal time to get their rookie some playing time. In week 12, we watched as the Baltimore Hawks traveled to the desert for a rematch of last year’s Ultimus match up (as well a preview to this season’s championship game?). This game was vastly different and something the Outlaws are not used to. Within the first 17 seconds of the game, the Hawks were leading and would hold that lead through 3 full quarters. In the 4th quarter, the Outlaws made a final push to tie the game. The game was finally decided in overtime with a Turk Turkleton field goal. With the Outlaws playing from behind, you would expect their best players on the field for every snap. This meant that Zhang was left on the sidelines. He finished week 12 with only a single catch for 8 yards. There are still games to be played but Zhang may have peaked as far as the S3 season is concerned. I’m sure he won’t mind too much though if he claims a ring when this season concludes. Through 12 games now, Zhang has accumulated 505 yards on 40 catches averaging 12.6 YPC. He also has 2 TDs so far this season. At this rate, he will finish the season with 46 receptions for 589 yards and 3 TDs. He has already surpassed my predictions for yards this season and may still hit the TD mark I had set. Jaquan Young – 28th overall – Yeti Prediction: 250 yards and 2 TDs JaQuan Young had some playing time in these last 2 weeks. Although the Yeti are having a down year, it’s a good sign when they still come out and give it their all and actually play some of these “better” teams close. Week 11 was another sign of this as they the Otters at home. Despite Pierno’s multi interception game, the Yeti led for a short time in the 4th quarter. JaQuan had what could be a typical game at this point racking up 31 yards on a pair of catches. Of those 15 completions, Young was on the receiving end of 2 of them racking up 13 yards. Week 12 was a similar story with the Yeti losing another close game; this time on the road in Las Vegas. In normal Pierno fashion, he came out and threw 2 interceptions. The Yeti were able to tie the score late in the 1st quarter and it would be well into the 3rd quarter before that tie was broken. In the match up versus the also struggling Legion, Young managed 3 catches for 17 yards. As the As the Yeti continue this rebuild, Young should become a more involved player on offense. If will be fun to watch how he performs with a competent QB under center. Young’s performances through 12 weeks now has him on pace for 27 catches, 229 yards, and still 0 TDs. Connor Tanner – 41st overall – Legion Prediction: 400 yards and 3 TDs Connor Tanner continues to do what he knows best and that’s be a big bodied target in the red zone. In week 11, the Legion hosted the Philadelphia Libery. What surprised many was that after 17 minutes of play, the Legion were winning 13-0. This lead would last until the final play of the 3rd quarter when the Liberty would tie it up before running away with the win. At this point, it seems QB Bercovici favors only Alexandre LeClair above Tanner. In this game against the Liberty, Tanner would lead the team with receptions with 6. He was second behind LeClair in receiving yards and both of them found the end zone. This set a new career high for receptions in a game. The Legion traveled to Colorado for their week 12 match up. This game was just bad as the 2 most productive players on the field would be the punters. In the end, the Legion would prevail over the Yeti 14-10. Tanner was very involved in this game as well as he had another 7 catches for 55 yards and 2 additional TDs! This marks a new high in receptions in a game at 7. Now through 12 games, Tanner has 45 catches for 444 yards and an average of 9.9 YPC. After these 2 games, Tanner is on pace for 52 catches, 518 yards and could see 2 more TDs to end the season with 8. Budda Browning – 43rd overall – Philadelphia Liberty Prediction: about 300 yards and 1 TD If you have to describe Budda Browning in 1 word, it may be consistent. He is not flashy, he doesn’t dominate defenses (yet), but he’s there and performs when the QB targets him. In week 11, the Liberty traveled to Las Vevas in what was sure to be an easy win. The game started off in the Legion’s favor but eventually the Liberty would take the lead and all would be right in the world. Browning had his usual minor contribution in this game gaining 22 yards on 3 catches. In week 12, we saw the Liberty play host to the Orange County Otters. As we have seen in the past, the Otters are an offensive powerhouse. Watching this game, you would not have thought that. The Liberty held Mike Boss in check and came away with the win after a field goal in the final minute. Clifford Rove had an exciting game with 356 yards. The big 3 in North, Kroetch, and TE Paul DiMirio all had very productive games. Browning did add his own usual production to the team to the tune of 2 catches for 20 yards and for the first time in career, Budda had a touchdown. With the Liberty hosting the Yeti in week 13, I would like to see Browning get a little more playing time. Through 12 weeks now, Budda has 33 receptions for 286 yards and an average 8.7 YPC. He is on pace for 38 receptions and 334 yards. Nate Atasuke – 46th overall – Otters Prediction: 400 yards and 2 TDs The Orange County Otters are slowing down as the season progresses. In week 11, they visited the Yeti in Colorado. Mike Boss completed 28 passes for 298 yards however, the Otters won this game by less than 1 TD. As it has been the story all season, Nate Atasuke has had to compete not only against the opposing defenses, but with the fearsome threesome of Phelps, Westfield, and Wright Jr. for QB looks. In the slim victory over the Yeti, Atasuke had his 2nd lowest statistical game this season. Nate pulled in just 3 of Boss’ 28 completions for only 25 yards. Things did not get any better for Atasuke and the Otters in week 12 when they headed to Philly. Boss completed just 18 passes this game as the Liberty went on to edge out the Otters 18-17. Nate had another game with minimal contribution but aside from Phelps’ 82 yards, it was a down week for all Orange Couty receivers. Atasuke managed just 3 catch for 27 yards. I will stand by my previous comments that Nate is having a good rookie season, even with his last 3 games being on a downward trend. Through 12 games now, he has recorded 48 receptions for 515 yards, a 10.7 YPC average, and 2 TDs. Atasuke is on pace for 56 receptions and 600 yards and 3 TDs. Brian Wheat – 47th overall – Baltimore Hawks Prediction: 300 yards and 2 TDs Brian Wheat is lighting in up for the Kansas City Coyotes and he has been fun to watch. I have mentioned it before but Wheat may be the lone draw for me to watch DSFL games. His game play had made it exciting to tune in each week. In week 11, the Coyotes hosted the Portland Pythons and Wheat once again had a great game. Leading his team in yards, he racked up 74 on 5 catches. While other team mates have been getting more targets, Wheat is the receiver that is gaining those valuable yards after the catch. Week 12 was a little different for the Coyotes. Then headed south of the border to face off with the Tijuana Luchadores. Coyotes’ QB Shawn Brady was held to just 122 yards limiting the production of their entire receiving core. Wheat managed just 2 catches for 18 yards setting a season low for both categories. After a down week for Brian, I expect him to bounce back when his Coyotes head to Virginia to face off with the Seawolves. As the season winds down, Wheat will look for a last push to help his team make the playoffs. With 12 weeks in the books, he has racked up 31 catches for 432 yards, an impressive 13.9 YPC average and 2 TDs. With this performance, Wheat is on pace for 36 catches for 504 yards and 3 TDs. Keep in mind, after this season concludes, Wheat will be returning to the Hawks’ lineup where he will need to step up and fill in the void that Matthew Vincent left. As the Hawks’ WR3, Wheat could consider this season’s success when he returns to the NSFL next season. Trey Willie – 10th overall – Baltimore Hawks Prediction: 700-1000 with 7 TDs Many were concerned with how the acquisition of Stormblessed would hinder Willie’s success this season. Before the trade that brought Storm into the Hawks locker room prior to week 5, Willie was averaging 5 catches for just over 90 yards per game. He was the leading receiver in all 4 games. Since sharing the field with Storm, Willie has seen a decrease in his yards per game down to just 79.5 while still averaging almost 5 receptions a game. In those 8 games sharing the field with Stormblessed, Willie has been the leading receiver 4 times and he and Strom tied with 96 yards in week 9. While you can say that Stormblessed has have a minor impact to Willie’s stat line, the benefit of having him on the field far outweighs the 11 yards per game average that Willie has lost. In week 11, the Sabercats came to Baltimore in what was supposed to be a close game. While neither team had an exceptional week, Baltimore did do enough to secure the win. Although Willie led the team in receiving yards, he was 4th on the team in receptions. Week 12 had probably the most surprising outcome of any game this season. The Hawks headed out to the desert to meet the Arizona Outlaws. Due to a contract dispute between the NSFL and several local stations, this game was not broadcast live. We can only imagine what it looked like if you weren’t in those stands but somehow after overtime, the Hawks were victorious. Trey Willie had a good game gaining87 yards on 5 receptions. He also added another 94 yards on special teams during his 3 kick-off returns. Through 12 games now, Willie has accumulated 58 receptions for 997 yards, a 17.2 YPC average, and 3 TDs. In week 13, Willie is almost certain to break the 1000 yard mark for the season and is on pace to still finish the season with 68 receptions, 1163 yards, and 4TDs. 2022 words GRADED *S3 Rookie Wide Receivers Recap Week 11 & 12 - PDXBaller - 10-09-2017 Great analysis!
