*What Went Wrong - RavensFanFromOntario - 10-15-2017

In a results driven league, two seasons of Tyler Varga's win-now, turned rebuild approach was enough for both players, fans and more directly, the owner. After seeing where the team ended up following Varga's big talk headed into their inaugural season, it was evident that he fundamentally approached building his team the incorrect way. It was a flaw in logic, when you need to skip a premise or two to make your approach work on paper, a massive and ultimately damning happenstance. But what exactly were those one or two events that Varga so clearly overlooked?

Simply put, the main problem was underestimating the strength of that incredible S2 draft. While obviously the inaugural draft made teams what they are largely, the season two draft was of similar depth and quality that it put teams like the Philadelphia Liberty in an obviously superior relative position because they played to that strength. So much talent fell through the Legion's grasp and led to them lacking immense amounts of depth, and attempting to rely on what they viewed their strength as, their passing game.

I wasn't alone in thinking the Legion's passing game wouldn't be historically bad. Many other individuals pictured the Legion's offense leading the team to a third place spot in the division while others possibly saw them making the playoffs. The defense had holes, but a stout duo of Cox and Ramrio, and some mediocre talent spread among the secondary. However, the lack of an offensive line, combined with Bercovici's inherent ability to throw the ball away led to an abysmal season for the team.

So that's essentially it, a lack of depth, a misjudgment on the depth of a historic draft and an overestimate on the strength of the passing offense's prolific ability , or lack thereof ultimately led to the demise of one, Tyler Varga's GM career.

What's...kinda funny was that I employed a very similar strategy in the inaugural DSFL draft.

Had we expanded in S4 vice S2, your plan likely would have paid off big, as there would be more inactives with higher TPE and fewer active players worth a high draft pick.

Timing played a huge part but that's on me. I should've known that.
