*NSFL Season 4 Week 1 Running Back Success Rates - PigSnout - 11-12-2017 This is a statistic I wanted to try tracking last season, but I wasn't able to find a logistical way to do it without taking forever. However, I've found a way to simplify the process and am going to keep track of this statistic over the course of the season. I found out about the running back success rating statistic from this article by Football Outsiders. The idea behind it is that it is another way to analyze a running back's performance and focuses on consistency. Total yardage is heavily reliant on volume and yards per carry can be skewed by a few big plays, so success rate looks more at how sustained the running back's success was over each play of the game. The statistic is similar to a batting average from baseball, it is the running back's number of successful runs divided by their number of total runs. A successful run is defined as 40% of yards needed on 1st down, 60% of yards needed on 2nd down, and 100% of yards needed on 3rd or 4th down. The article I linked has more information about how Football Outsiders came up with the statistic and determined the benchmark percentages. For this article, I determined the success ratings for NSFL running backs in their Week 1 performances by classifying each run as either successful or not successful and then dividing their successful runs by their total runs. Since the percentages don't mean much with a very small number of carries, I did not include backups. However, the Wraiths and the Otters look to be splitting carries pretty evenly between two running backs so I included both running backs for those teams. I also included a weekly average, since it's kind of hard to tell what is a good performance since this isn't a very common statistic. Here are the numbers from Week 1: I'm going to do one of these for each week of the season and I will also include a cumulative ranking of how each running back is doing for the entire season, however I don't have one of those for this week's edition since it's not much use with just one week of data.
